I'd say steins;gate is a solid 10 over anything else this year aside from Madoka keeping things in perspective.

I can't remember any other anime that really stood out in 2011 that I really enjoyed and followed except those two. I don't consider F/Z as part of 2011 since it didn't actually end. It's just taking a break and is to be continued in April 2012.

Fact of the matter is that it did air in 2011, and pretending its airs in 2012 is just silly. This year we had the 2nd half of SRW OGIN, then a bunch of shitty seasons, and then a good one for Fall. So 2011 wasn't much different from past years. SRW/FateZero/GC/Horizon/Shana/Persona/Gundam all worth mentioning, to various degrees of how good they are. I have a feeling S;G as well, but never got around to finishing it. IMO rose-colored glasses are starting to affect more and more people in ADT lol.

So my current favorite anime are Code Geass, Madoka, and Steins; Gate, 2 of which came out this year. XD Fate/Zero is good, but it isn't over yet, while Gundam Unicorn is cool, but not my favorite. The incredibly stereotypical characters and exaggerated everything killed it for me. It was like a more prudish but fail version of Evangelion. Edit: On December 26 2011 12:12 OutlaW- wrote: so is horizon seriously good? :D i might watch it, been thinking about it for a while Horizon the anime is fairly good, but I'd say it's not even a modicum of the novels, unfortunately. They cut out too many lines, missed too many explanations for it to be truly enjoyable by anyone who hasn't read it. Which is what we sort of expected :/ Edit: Steins;Gate Mostly for Milkis, but explanations for why I felt the VN was really good, but from the discussion on IRC about the anime I realized the anime may have glossed over- + Show Spoiler + Regarding his "annoying" mad scientist shenanigans: Not sure how well it was conveyed in the anime but a recurring image in the VN was Mayuri standing in front of her grandma's tombstone staring into the sky. She did this every day for hours upon hours, such that it made a young Okarin think she was letting herself die. Bear in mind that Okabe thinks of Mayuri as a little sister, as a very crucial family member. So much that the young Okabe comes up with a bizarre excuse to give her a reason to live: that he's a mad scientist, and that he's holding her hostage. That doesn't make any sense if you think about it, but it gives her a reason to live, however contrived (I think they both know it, honestly), and it sort of forces Okabe into acting like a mad scientist, both to remind her (she doesn't need reminding though) and mostly to mask his anxiety regarding her state of mind. In the VN he has an amusing habit of forgetting to act a mad scientist. Also, this plays an important part in the final chapter. But let's go through some of the annoyances and their reasoning. The characters. In my defense, I said most of the characters do their thing for a reason. Daru was obviously a stereotypical 2channer, and Luka was a useless character. Akiha (Feyris) acts the way she does because she's trying to atone for what she perceives her killing of her father. Overall most characters do their shit on purpose, with the exception of Kurisu, who was a pretty natural tsundere, for better or for worse. With regards to each part of the pattern, Suzu's arc was pretty straight-forward I think. It begins his agony, because during the partying she mentions it's the happiest she's ever been, and he also has to face the fact that his "discovery" has essentially destroyed the future. As such, he's robbed her of her family (Daru has abandoned her, she's left her mother, etc.), her future, and any semblance of happiness. He's especially hit hard when he realizes her machine is a one-way trip, because it means she has no hope of salvation of sorts, all she is is a carrier of the IBN. He "goes emo" then in ripping away her one happy moment to allow her to fulfill her robotic mission... all in favor of Mayuri. Because that's what it amounts to - he's crushing her happiness and future in favor of Mayuri. It's also worth noting that Suzu's "end" involves him unable to make that decision, instead escaping into a time loop where everyone's happy in order to find some solution, but he never does, and goes insane. I forget order but Feyris arc was one of the comparably useless ones, but served an important role in his diminishing psyche. Because after this route he literally has blood on his hands - he kills her father in favor of saving Mayuri. Now, philosophically you can argue that because he's essentially just going away from that branch, he's not really affecting it so much as simply shifting his location, but it's clear he doesn't think of it that way. A lot is made over the fact that he doesn't care if you could justify it via apathy and distancing, the fact that he's experienced the happiness on the other side of the branch makes it his responsibility when he cuts out someone else's happiness in favor of his own. So in his mind, he kills her father, and along with it a significant amount of her happiness, for his own selfishness. It's also worth noting that, as I mentioned, Feyris is one of the very few characters that really show trans-node remembrance: she has an inkling as to what's going on with his time traveling, as she thanks him in the end for her happy dream. I don't remember what her end was exactly but it was the only "happy" side-character end despite Mayuri's unavoidable death. Luka's route was worthless. I don't think it's even worth mentioning except that in his (her?) end they basically allow Mayuri to die and have to live with the guilt. This was the primary "filler" that annoyed me. The removal of happiness simply gnaws at him more. And Moeka's route was the second super important one (aside from Suzu). Here he realizes the full extent of how much he fucked up history, because it's revealed around this time that his discovery of time travel caused SERN to create a direct line to his house (wow) in order to keep watch, and fucked up the lives oh dozens of people whom were simply used to watch over him and attempt to find the IBN. He realizes that as much as he despises Moeka for killing Mayuri, a lot of it has to do with his discovery as well, and he begins to transfer his rage at himself, the time machine, and fate. By this point he's just mentally spent. And the tipping point of sorts is when Mr. Braun shoots himself. As much as they argued, they liked each other a lot, you know? And something that was apparently skipped in the anime is that the loli actually is a psychotic version of herself, in that she stewed over her father's death, so in the future, she kidnaps Okabe and brutally tortures him to death, recovers and repairs the original (Kurisu's) time leaper, and leaps back in time, three days at a time, for some 20-30 years until she came back to this moment, in order to stab Moeka for vengeance. He's crushed by how he absolutely demolished her life, and also apologizes for ruining her vengeance, as he changes time again. And again, he has blood on his hands. By this point he feels the weight of the world, having caused SERN to dominate the world and create a dystopia that ruined everything. He also feels responsible for Mr. Braun's death, Moeka's death (he struggles mightily with that one, as part of him feels like she deserves it, but part of him is still appalled at slaughter), etc. ... imagine the relief he felt when he found the IBN again. Everything was good! He doesn't have to wreck anymore lives, doesn't have to kill anymore people, can just go back to his ordinary life. And then the hammer that you can see coming strikes, which is that he needs to reverse the first mail, to return Kurisu to death. I mentioned in the IRC channel that the VN does a fantastic job of building this up, because over all the above arcs, as he breaks down mentally more and more, he relies on Kurisu more and more, to the point where most of the stuff he does is per her orders. She's the one he confides in every time (no one else is useful), she's the one that enables him to do everything (she begins to speed up construction of the time leaper for him every time, etc.), she's his mental support whenever he's about to just give up, she's there every time. So when it comes to the relatively short final chapter, it's all about his final pre-determined decision. Of whether he can kill his beloved for family. But we say pre-determined because he never really had a choice at all - the reality is that he HAS to kill her, because her survival leads to SERN's world domination and dystopia. You also get all the interaction with Mayuri back, as she feels she's "done her job" of keeping Okabe alive to this point, and implores him to let her free and just live his life. And then of course the Epilogue happens, but that was mostly to provide a happy ending, a sort of salvation for Okabe, who'd been so beat down over the ideal that he totally doesn't want to give a shit about anything anymore. Not really surprising. I'm not sure how well the anime got all of this psyche stuff through, unfortunately, and obviously in non-VN form it's a lot more difficult to become emotionally invested in someone. It's a strength of the medium. Kara no Shoujo (similar style of abusing emotional attachment to a character) takes advantage of it too. Sorry for the wall of text, but hopefully that clarifies some stuff for you :>

Yes, it aired in 2011, but won't have any sort of conclusion until 2012, so if it's for any best of's, I'd consider it for the 2012 year. + Show Spoiler + Prologue The Forest of Death The legend recites. That Evil will awaken from the depth of darkness, and that the world would be turned to hell. The God of Fate would select six heroes, and give them the strength to save the world. The story that will be told, is a story about heroes that were tasked with saving the world. But as the story is told, one thing must be remembered. There will always be six selected to save the world. Not five, not seven. Always six. One boy ran through the mist-covered forest. A young swordsman with swaying, long, red hair. He wore light, leather armor over his hemp clothes, and an iron forehead protector around his head. He gripped in his right hand a slightly small but sturdily crafted sword. What drew one’s eyes were the four thick, leather belts around his waist. Some tens of little bags were tied to the belts. “Haa… haa… haa…” The boy was wounded. Here and there his hemp shirt was torn, revealed sharp cuts. The leather armor was burnt, and burn marks could be seen on the skin of both hands. His seeping blood soaked his shoes red. A normal human would have already collapsed. The boy’s name was Adlet Meyer. He was 17. Adlet looked behind while running. The mist and foliage obstructed the light, making the forest dark. But even then, he could barely see human shadows beyond the dark mist. Adlet was being chased. His pursuit had closed within roughly 30 meters. Crap, he thought, and a voice echoed through the forest. “There you are!” A girl shouted. A high-pitched, soft, baby-bird-like voice. “Kuh!” Simultaneously with the voice, a blade sprouted from below Adlet. The silver blade roughly three meters in length suddenly grew from the ground. They were aimed accurately at Adlet’s heart. Adlet swung his sword with a backhand grip. The quartz ornament adorning his grip barely blocked the tip. The momentum flung him back, and the blade crumbled. Tumbling backward, he stabbed his sword into the ground. Raising himself with the strength of his arms, he jumped. The next moment, three more blades sprouted from the ground, assaulting Adlet. He slipped through them. “Did I get him?” The pursuing girl spoke. Adlet answered as he landed. “… Try harder. Finishing blows are struck silently, by the way.” And he started running again. Far enough that he wouldn’t be able to see his pursuit. “Is that all you’ve got? You don’t think the world’s strongest guy can be caught that easily, do you?” “How persistent!” The girl still gave chase. As he ran, Adlet pressed against his right arm. In truth, he wasn’t able to completely evade the previous attack. His upper arm had been gashed, and was bleeding. His composed words were an effort to mask the wound. As he ran, Adlet looked the back of his right hand. A mysterious emblem was engraved into it. It was the size of an infant’s hand. In the middle of the complex runes was a flower with six petals. The emblem glowed a dull, thin red. Adlet muttered, looking at the emblem. “I won’t get killed. The heroes of Six Flowers can’t get killed here.” What was on Adlet’s right hand. In layman’s terms, was called the Emblem of Six Flowers. The proof of a hero’s selection, to carry the burden of saving the world. The legend recites. At the far west end of the continent, lay slumbering a fearsome beast. Its appearance was too terrible to speak of, its strength surpassing human imagination. It is said that its existence was solely to slaughter humans. When it awakens, it would gather as subordinates tens of thousands of crazed beasts and assault the continent, turning the world into hell. The beast had no name, simply being called a devil. The legend recites. When the devil awakens from its long slumber, the God of Fate would select six heroes. That the selected heroes would, on their body, have an engraving of six flowers. Only those six selected heroes could defeat the devil. Adlet Meyer was selected as a Hero of Six Flowers. And he departed on the journey to defeat the devil. He met the those selected by fate to fight alongside him, and headed toward the land where the beast slumbered. However. “You still persist!?” A voice that crept closer from behind. Blades that sprung from the ground. Adlet was desperately escaping from them. His vision blurred from blood loss. His fingertips grew colder, and his legs began giving out. But he couldn’t stop. He’d be killed if he got caught. Why did this happen, Adlet thought. In truth, they should already be assaulting the place of the beast’s slumber. Along with those selected by fate, they should be fighting the evil that obstructs them. But now, Adlet was being pursued by a girl, and about to be killed. “This time!” The girl quickly continued attacking Adlet’s location. The blades grazed Adlet’s hair and sliced apart his armor. “Guh!’ He crouched under the blade coming toward him from in front. And then he quickly stood up and resumed running. This time a blade came from below. He rolled to the side to avoid it. The aim wasn’t perfect, but the attacks were relentless. Of some tens of blades, one or two would catch Adlet. And every time he evaded one, the distance between him and his pursuit shrank. “!” Blades coming from the left and right at the same time. One gouged into the Adlet’s side. Along with the impact of having a rib shredded, his body was flung to the side, and he rolled. Blood bubbled forth from his throat. Clutching his side, he crouched. He could no longer stand. His pursuit had already come within sight range. “… I’ve finally caught you.” A girl appeared from the tree shades through the mist. A florid girl. Covered in white armor, and jewels encrusted the grip of the rapier she clutched. She wore a helmet with rabbit ear designs. Bright, flaxen hair. Big, red eyes. Plump lips. A distinctly beautiful girl. Just by standing there, she emitted an aura of nobility and grace. She was a girl covered in grace. “… Nashetania.” Adlet said her name. He knew. By Nashetania’s breast was, like Adlet’s right hand, an Emblem of Six Flowers. She, too, was a Hero of Six Flowers, selected to defeat the devil. He was about to be killed by someone he was supposed to fight alongside. “… Listen, Nashetania.” “What is it?” “… I’m your companion.” Nashetania giggled. And then pointed her rapier at Adlet. The blade reached out and pierced his ear. “Of all things to say now, that?” Nashetania was laughing. But she looked like she was staring at an insect. “What an idiot. If you surrendered and confessed, I would let you die peacefully.” “There’s nothing to confess. I’ve done nothing wrong.” “It’s useless. I won’t be tricked any longer.” Nashetania quietly sighed. “You trapped us. You deceived us, and hurt us. It’s already clear that you’re an imposter.” “I’m not lying. You’re the one being tricked. The enemy’s using you to kill me.” But those words never reached Nashetania. “I never killed a companion. And I never placed any traps.” “I said before. I won’t be tricked any longer.” “I’m not tricking you! Listen, Nashetania! I’m not the seventh!” The rapier Nashetania gripped, reached out. Its tip was pointed at Adlet’s heart. “Wrong. You are the seventh.” The legend recites. When the devil awakens, and the world is endangered, the God of Fate will select six heroes. On the bodies of the six heroes will be an emblem depicting a flower. Only the six heroes can defeat the devil and save the world. However. Seven appeared with the Emblem of Six Flowers. All seven appeared with, without a doubt, a real emblem. Why was there an extra? Adlet knew the reason. One of the seven was an enemy. One who'd waded into their midst, to trap them, to kill them. But who amongst the seven heroes was the enemy? Adlet still didn’t know the answer. Just wanted to share with someone, lol.

IMO rose-colored glasses are starting to affect more and more people in ADT lol. I wouldn't say its rose-colored glasses so much as having watched anime for several years and thus being able to pick out most of the tropes. One can only take so much of the weaksauce shota+magical/special loli girl, angsty special teenager, harem show, or other cliche regurgitation before giving them up. It's gotten to the point where I can take a look at the anime chart for an upcoming season and predict which shows are going to suck and which ones I'll probably like without watching a single episode. Also I don't really consider anime adaptions of manga anymore, since in my experience manga>anime 99%+ of the time so I stick to reading manga now. Leaving anime-originals, VN, or light novel only, looking back at the year only Steins;gate and Madoka were outstanding and original imo. I don't count my every season or two happy slice of life indulgence because I have a weakspot for those even if they objectively aren't that great >_>
