huk keeps trying this stargate-into-templar PvZ, except it just seems way more work than its worth. i honestly dont know why he avoids colossus, it seems like hes trying to proving a point.

he gets these phoenixes, forces a bunch of hydras, then stops producing out of his stargate and goes templar while trying to grab a third; meanwhile the zerg just masses the shit out of roaches since he stopped stargate production. so huk has chargelots and a couple of storms against a fuckton of roaches and it just seems terrible. especially since 1) he has to get a robo for burrowed roaches anyway, and 2) he never got that nice fat sentry count because all his gas went to phoenixes and then to templar.

the timing for colossus is just ten times easier, and he can transition into that ideal templar/immortal lategame army after staying alive first.

Yeah but improvising or trying new strategies is always good. If you lose a couple of games - so what?? You tried out new stuff and try to polish them and maybe you'll end up with something good! Also, the "usual" strategies are well read by Z opponents, they know how to respond well to them. Sometimes these new strats catch them offguard or totally disrupts their normal ZvP gameplan. this/tehses are decent posts. im just trying ot make it viable becuz i really want to. collosus are so boring and i feel like vs good zerg players who have very high microable units they can outplay me easily with such inflexible collosus builds. believe me its even more frustrating for me to lose games when i can play another way to win games, but its necessary to xplore these routes in depth and try to learn as much as possible even if the end i find it to be conclusive that they are not viable.

i have been studying the early stargate PvZ build since beta... have you consider the phoenix expand into prism with senties blocking ramp on 2 bases?

with the phoenix deny map control/scouting and the early 4 sentries, you can get a robo-> prism relatively fast while getting tons of gates and +1 on 2 gases. use the phoenix to deny map control while elevator the small army up to Z main and abuse FF. On maps such as metal/shatter this is really strong and only get countered by roach burrow move without speed. you gona get an obs anyway so that is not a true counter.

<3 HuK . I agree with huk alot, ive been winning like 30% of my PvZ going standard stalker collosus these days, it just feels so weak >_<. Lately ive been doing more stargate play instead. Been having some success with throwing up a 2nd stargate when i see hydras after my initial stargate harass. Keeping around 10-15 phoenix deals really well with hydra (as long as you save up alot of energy for graviton on some phoenix, and only harassing with 5-6), it seems like hydra a-move doesnt prioritize phoenix so its easy to lift and kill all of them really fast. voids/sentry/stalker/chargelot cleans roach hydra mix rly well. Only tried a couple games with it, seems like the counter is fast muta/corruptor tho :x. Havent rly worked out the kinks too much, but experimenting with more stargate builds has gotten me much more success lately on 1800ish masters ladder. ( inspired by MC's "phoenix imba" xD)

Maybe u can try double stargate phoenix play and make it work huk xD would love to see it as another midgame option for pvz! which is suchh a difficult MU for so many toss atm

i watch your stream a lot, as its by far the best toss stream around, so i feel like ive been following your playstyle since your hyperaggressive little sentry zealot pokes off 3gate expand.

i think honestly the issue with this build may be that the phoenix harass fades away and you have no aggression to replace it with. the phoenix stuff almost always pays off, but once zerg stabilizes with hydra roach, when they hit their timing window, you're busy teching to temps and expanding at the same time, and you simply can't defend all three bases. it doesnt help that it usually takes more than two storms to kill a handful of roaches, and that's just not cost effective. i think if you transitioned into a different type of aggression, you could expand. i vote for colossus once you see hydra den. they can't micro with hydras against colossus, so i dont know what youre afraid of. if you see a spire, then by all means head for storm.

whatever it is, i think there's that crucial timing window in which youre waiting for the first round of temps to get energy, and the third hasn't paid off yet, and the zerg has 3 base hydra roach. the band-aid cannons aren't enough; you've just invested too much too fast into both tech and expand, and none of it has paid off. you micro your ass off, but all they have to do is split their army and hit both your nat and third. whenever control group 1 (zealot sentry archon) is out of position, stalkers and probes die.

tldr: in my opinion, for this to work, you may need to either 1) cover that timing window with more units and less tech or 2) have followup pressure ready to take over for the phoenixes (too bad spores make dts nonviable).

edit: thinking about this more, i just dont think templar are good if they go hydra roach. temps are good against any lategame army because food counts are high and you can't dodge the storms, you have enough energy to carpet bomb any army, and because hydra roach sucks against the rest of your army. but during that roach hydra timing window, when you dont have a backbone for your temps, i dont think its worth rushing for.

if you remember one of the first code A games you played against some TSL zerg on shakuras, you had basically lost that game because you skipped colo and he got mass roach; only by FAR outplaying him did you get your third up complete your blink/templar/immo army, max out and win.
