This thread is for discussing recent bans. Don't discuss other topics here. Take it to website feedback if you disagree with a ban or want to raise an issue. Keep it civil.NOTE: For those of you who want to find the actual ABL thread where the bans are posted. Please look in here: https://tl.net/forum/closed-threads/ |

I've read through hundreds and hundreds of pages in the Automated Ban List; although many do warrant a ban, I find that more than 50% of them are either for some obscure thing that the mod somehow finds offensive or just mods power-tripping on little things that barely registers as offensive at all unless you're a 12 year old who happens to log on the internet for the very first time. This is bullshit. HARDLY 50+% of the bans are due to "obscure" offenses or "power-tripping". I can guarantee you that a vast majority of those bans in the 50+% you mention seem harsher than the offense warrants because those users had been warned about similar things beforehand. The severity of a ban increases with repeat offenses, which is why you see 30-day bans on people for calling others retarded and such. It has nothing to do with power-tripping or anything.
Don't misrepresent the way the staff on TL handles moderation. You don't know the whole story, so stop parroting these statistics you pulled out of mid-air.

But why are they martyring themselves? Even if you are correct and moderation is horribly inconsistent and biased, why does that encourage people to say "I might get banned for this but" knowing that they will definitely get banned for it?

![[image loading]](http://www.teamliquid.net/staff/p4NDemik/MSpaint/Ban_1.jpg) Although the attitude of the post was bad, I think the response image makes me think that the reason for the ban was wrong. It can be seriously possible that the earthquake did have an effect on the Asian internet connection to USA if the undersea cables between Japan and USA were damaged during the earthquake. And this seems to be the case according to BBC at least. If the ban was because of the attitude, I can agree on that because it makes a joke about a horrible disaster which isn't appropriate at all. I would also agree for the ban if it was because it was posted on a TSL LR thread (which seems to have a lot of lag whine). The ban reason just doesn't seem to add up to that. If he was genuinely referencing damage done to undersea cables then he can pm me about it to challenge the ban and I'll speak to him and possibly undo it. But my general assumption when dealing with people online is that they just don't know what they're talking about. Banned users do have the option to pm the mod who banned them and if he felt it was unreasonable then he is able to talk to me about it. So far I've heard nothing from him and it'll expire soon.

It's also extremely important to note that bans are frequently not based solely on a single post, but that user's posting history as a whole.
Idra fanclub bans are especially entertaining, so many people being inappropriate in a fanclub.

If ever I see the words "i'll get banned for this but" I stop reading the post and hit the ban button. If you think your post is unacceptable and make it anyway then you're trying to be a malicious user.

My personal opinion on martyrs is that they realize that the TL forum community is too big for them to become recognized, and being unable to pull a kona they think that by taking a gamble taking an extreme position on a random subject a nice amount of fellow nameless <100post TLers will give them attention.
What they don't know is that 1-anyone who is trying to cause random uproars in the community will just get temp'd and 2-they will get 3 people to quote them at best.
TL is huge right now, and in the timespan of 1 year the SC2 forums have brought in about as many people as TL had up until the release of the beta. Except that instead of taking their time and lurking the new folks feel like they have the right to speak their mind about a still developing game with no ground rules to shut them up already set.

It's funny because I don't really see "I might get banned for this" in other forums", and it's like people never ever ever see other people get banned for it. Plus I mean it's just a dumb thing to say, if you think you are going to get banned for something, just dont say it, or just say it and hope you don't get banned? It's a big face palm when I see people go down for that.
And wow + Show Spoiler + = damn near 3 pages of bans related to it.

Reason: With your posting and moderation history still making posts like that? You have 30 days for a last chance to control yourself at posting on these boards or just stay away. The offending post.
This guy is HamerD, right?

The idra fanclub thread was so sad after he lost. Sooo many bans atleast it was somewhat usefull for my report stats. I especialy love the guy that got a week ban for posting just after like 8 guys got a 2 day ban for doing the same.

I really don't understand the need to wallow on the way the system works.. it is what it is.. but only the horrors generated on the www warrant its use.
People need to realize how much they want to be here, however, banning is a necessary evil.. nothing more.
