As you have to register your gun at the army aswell, I guess this is including military, police, security companies, and hunters weapons, so what would be predominantly non-private usage. But this is only an educated guess. But a main difference is, automatic rifles are war machines in germany and therefore not available for sale by any means. I myself live in Bavaria too, I know a lot of people that go to shooting clubs, but that is mostly ancient rifles or sports weapons. They don't include military or police arms, it's the number in private use. According to this article there are 3.6 mio gun owners in Germany, so it's very unlikely you never ever met one. http://www.spiegel.de/panorama/justiz/0,1518,450175,00.html As I said most Germans should need a reality check before they continue bashing other countries over gun ownership.

Well, alright, that was exaggerated. Of course I don't ask everyone I meet if he's a gun owner, so I don't know if some random dude in one of my classes or one of our professors possesses a gun. But I most certainly know that nobody in my family whom I met more than once in my life owns a gun, nobody of my friends owns one, and on top of that, I'm pretty sure (although I can't confirm my guesses of course) that nobody whom I meet on a regular basis (let's say more than once a month) owns a gun. 3.6 million gun owners still is a lot though. I don't have the competency to really question the accuracy of that number, but I guess I live in a pretty weapon-free zone then (Oberfranken by the way). The numbers in that article make more sense too: 2 million owners of guns due to different kinds of shooting sports, 900,000 people who either inherited them or haven't used them in decades, 400,000 hunters and only 300,000 collectors.

I didnt know for sure about police and military arms, I never found a source stating explicit it is only private use, so my fault there. Nevertheless, it's true, people should check numbers and their environment before stating these things. @heishe: Oberfranken is too busy with the good old Bratwurst and Bier to shooting at stuff ![]()

That is deceiving as it suggests only collectors own several guns. You can own as many guns as you want (some restrictions apply) as a hunter or sports shooter as well, and many do. Collectors refers to the people who collect vintage guns for example. @kazancy I didn't say that I said there is one gun for every 4 house holds in Germany. Not that every 4th household has a gun much less every 4th person.

Since I believe the rest of your concerns were already addressed appropriately, I'll just chime in on the part where you call me out on it -> Yes, I am a proud American but one who does NOT own a gun nor have ANY desire to. I whole heartedly believe any mod on this forum would have been issuing out bans for the stupid posting, regardless of where they are from. Read that thread please. There are people who civily question why people would want to own guns in a polite and respectful way. Then, there are those who aggressively accuse and make assumptions in a thread not even meant for the discussion (it's a goddamned hobby thread). Guess which one of the two are banned and which ones weren't? It kills me that anyone thinks the bans were because of their stance on gun control. Couldn't be farther from the truth.

I never thought the bans have anything to do with stance on gun control itself, neither think that the reason you banned those and others has anything to do with you being american. I am sorry if it seemed to look that way. The bans that were handed out, I totally agree on. I was just a bit surprised by the length of especially the second ban, and supposed it was because you are american and therefore are used to a milder response to somebody posting 10 firearms he all owns, but it turned out that I was wrong there and on a closer look, well, they called in for such a response themselves. And I read the thread in total, the reason why I posted in there myself is that I was convinced of an apparent difference between politely questioning a hobby and needless aggressive accuses.

It is just not as big a deal here nor spoken about as openly as in the US, or quite as easy obtaining one but unless you got a record and some patience it is not exactly hard either.
