if you keep posting like this you will not last long here. TL demands better. This seemed pretty light to me considering his other post in the same thread: Azurin United States. March 22 2011 20:43. Posts 26 PM Profile Report Quote # WOOOOOW I just realize how damn good Tasteless is at filling time since artosis has such a hard time when he was casting alone (with fuckslits) While that's pretty damn dumb, "fuckslit" was the name of Kelly's account somewhere (can't remember where off the top of my head), so that's not out of nowhere.
Ah really? I didn't know that, I thought it was some sort of misogyny/racism lol.

The Gun Thread unsurprisingly provided some bans aswell.
Most of those are clearly on spot and foreseable, but the bans on Diks and Piy, one week each, for being almost the first posts in the thread and therefore no mod warning ahead, seems a bit hard to me. I of course don't know moderation history, but they basically stated what almost everybody in Europe high likely thought. Me included, my jaw dropped at some of those collections in disbelief.
I mean, funny enough, only US citizens and one Canadian have yet posted a serious gun, some of them 5+, and its high likely that there won't be many guns in there from Europe, apart from Russia maybe. The cultural difference on this is really enourmous, and (no Country Bashing here intended) the bans came by tubby, who is american, and therefore has a completely different cultural background.

If someone made a thread "Bratwurst Thread" and asked readers to post pictures of their favorite types of Bratwurst, and even said in the OP not to bother posting if you think Bratwurst is horrible, then a German mod would be justified in warning/banning someone who made the following post:
Lol! Bratwurst? Are you trying to poison yourself? That's the ugliest and most disgusting crap you could pretend to eat. Are you planning on poisoning some American with it?
It may be true that there is such a divide between the USA and Germany that most Americans cannot conceive of actually eating Bratwurst for pleasure, but that post is still unacceptable in that thread.
Every user should have a 'cultural background' of respecting the cultures of others even when you disagree with elements of them. There doesn't need to be a public disclaimer at the top of a thread which says "keep the thread on topic... no arguing about gun ownership in a thread about sharing your legal gun collection" for users to take their unwanted and unwarranted arguing elsewhere.
I think you'll be hard pressed to find a European mod on tl who is okay with people shitting up threads and inciting flames the way some of the banned-for posts in that thread did.

I issued bans in that topic and I'm European and in favour of gun control.

I don't understand why it's so hard to understand why some people like to collect guns. I don't personally collect them, but I can understand why someone would (for the same reasons people like to collect muscle cars, for example). Trying to derail the thread with a gun control debate or calling people psychos for no reason is just obviously stupid and perfectly banworthy. Culture is not an excuse for that.

Diks is a snap call. How can anyone with a rest of common sense think that is acceptable posting. Piy is not as clear cut, but the post is a huge flame bait ("Are you planning on shooting someone?") and derailing as well.
Especially my fellow Germans need a reality check on this topic. There are about 10 million registered firearms in Germany, which is about as many Canada has. That's 1 gun for every 4 house holds. I know several people around here who have a selection just like the ones posted in that thread. So I'll gladly ban people for posting stupidity like "That is absolutely illegal in Germany". If you don't know what you are talking about you shouldn't post, that's a common principle on TL.
So basically "cultural differences" don't excuse stupidity.

@Micronesia: I totally agree with you micronesia. I don't even bother the bans themselves. I only thought the ban length being a bit harsh regarding the issue, compared to what you usually have do to for being a week on disneyland.
You could maybe compare it to discussions about nudity other way round, things that might call imprisoning in some states in america (I admit I am not aware of the exact laws, but I know there are states where public holding hands between non-adults in love is prohibited), are not a big deal over here.
And don't get me wrong, I never meant to say there is a difference between american or european moderation, there of course isn't, I love you guys all the same (well, Mani a bit more of course, but he is apart competition)
@zatic: I agree that many people talk about this without having much of a clue about the actual law situation. But still, the amount of automatic firearms or even rifles apart from hunting rifles in germany might be dissapearingly low. There is a difference what you can meet on a shooting range here and over there, I think it was more about the amount of this type of weapons than the amount.in general.

That's pretty weird. I've literally never met anyone in my entire life who possesses a gun. Not even my dad, who has been with the German Marines for a long time (in his youth though, so granted that's a pretty long time back), has one. Certainly not "one in every four house holds". I'm from Bavaria so it could be that everyone but us are weapon fanatics, but I somehow strongly doubt that.
Are you sure that weapons of police, military etc. are not included in that "10 million weapons" number? Or are those literally just guns registered to civilians?
|
It's 10 million registered firearms hence to german police. As you have to register your gun at the army aswell, I guess this is including military, police, security companies, and hunters weapons, so what would be predominantly non-private usage. But this is only an educated guess. But a main difference is, automatic rifles are war machines in germany and therefore not available for sale by any means.
I myself live in Bavaria too, I know a lot of people that go to shooting clubs, but that is mostly ancient rifles or sports weapons.

Bavaria has the most guns in Germany as far as I know, and certainly the strongest pro gun lobby. I have been shooting a couple of times in Munich, including assault rifles which seemed to outrage everybody in that thread so much.

Same here, never met one who is even pro-firearms.
Wikipedia might not be the best source, but: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_gun_ownership http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_death_rate
Well, thats all i have to say to that, won't derail this or the gun thread further
