As an Asian American, I eat almost all dishes. Chinese food has some pretty weird dishes such as jellyfish, chicken feet, preserved (decomposed) egg, etc so the homogenized and fairly sanitary American cuisine poses no "ewww factor" to me at all. I sometimes go to fast food establishments to eat, and I am often faced with a long line. It surprises me that the white people in front of me will always provide meticulous directions regarding how their food must be prepared, and whine incessantly if their order isn't prepared to their exact specifications. Even for a simple burger, a piece of food that doesn't involve much culinary flair, a white person will make a dozen requests such as: no mayo, slightly rare patty, no salt on fries, less lettuce, no onions, less ice in the soda etc. Subway is the worst. White patrons meticulously describe what they can eat and what they cannot eat in an attempt to feign erudition or a sophisticated palate. For instance, they will make demands about how they will only accept a small squirt of mayo on their sandwich, how only the meat should be toasted and not the bread, how they eat pickles but not tomatoes, etc etc etc. It takes a white person at least three or four times as long as an Asian person to order a Subway because everybody Asian that I know just gets everything on their sandwich. These experiences really struck a chord with me since my cousin is half white. (Basically, he has no Asian culture left). When he came to live at my house for a month in 5th or 6th grade, he would make endless complaints about the food we gave him. For instance avocado irritates his throat, tater tots would cause an allergic reaction while french fries would not. Additionally he can't eat curly fries because they are too salty. He won't eat hot-dogs made out off meat that is not beef. Additionally, eating honey instead of white sugar will give him a headache. Additionally, he cannot eat a vegetable or anything that has touched a vegetable. Honey Bunches of Oats are off limits because there are nuts and honey in there, and Cheerios can't be eaten because they contain whole grain and honey. Six years later, he is a high school senior, and his diet composes primarily of wonder bread, balogna, kraft cheese, pizza, and some Italian pastas so long as they have never touched plants living or dead before. He's "lactose intolerant" so he can't drink milk, but he somehow still eats ice cream. I am really confused as to why white people can't just eat vegetables. Is it to create a feeling of self-superiority? I can seriously and honestly imagine my cousin thinking in his head, "Look at those uneducated Chinese swine, eating vegetables and tater tots. Hahaha. I am white, therefore I eat only beef and homogenized pork." It must feel glorious to believe that you are better than somebody else since you eat a smaller variety of foods. Please tell me if I'm wrong, but I can't think of any better reason as to why whites can't eat normal foods.
