There have been threads about this in other places like here but I'm thinking about something slightly different.
G'day folks!
Just wanting to enquire about Starcraft 2 themed replacement keycaps - would you be interested in it? Something like I've seen before somewhere (but I can't find the pictures) - where you would have the icon for a SC2 skill on a corresponding key. For example if you were a Protoss you might want a Storm icon key instead of your T key. A Forcefield icon key on your F. Zergies might want inject as V, and so on.
Much like the gorgeous Teamliquid keys (of which I have 2!) I think they'd look snazzy and add some character to your keyboard.
Again, I'm just wondering if anyone would be interested in it, because I can talk to some people about it. This is no guarantee it can be done - of course there are factors like talking to Blizzard to get official permission for use of the 'trademark' and such - but like I said, I'd rather see the interest before I go to that kind of trouble.
If you have a "dream" of what you'd like to have as a key layout please do post that here too - keeping in mind that over-saturation of the custom keys would ruin the fun. But that's up to you.
Poll: Would you be interested in purchasing these keycaps?Yes (103) 67% No (43) 28% Yes - if this option was added (please state) (7) 5% 153 total votes Your vote: Would you be interested in purchasing these keycaps? (Vote): Yes (Vote): No (Vote): Yes - if this option was added (please state)
Edit: Poll added

That TL keycap looks so cool. If I didn't have a laptop at the moment I would get one of those and everytime I pressed it my browser would open a new tab into TL.net. Hopefully in the near future I can afford an actual PC so yes, I am very interested in something like this.

You're interested in the SC2 skill keycap too right... not just the TL one?
Sounds like a good idea. I'd consider changing keys for FF and Storm at least. Maybe replace the E key with a keycap that has a probe and a pylon on it (although I'm not sure how good it would look being so small).
Yeah i think that would be cool, anything to make my gameing better and my gaming setup look more boss haha, i dont know if the icon is what is totally needed just a sharper color that i can see in the corner of my eye when needed, but nothing wrong with a cool logo that looks good either

If it came to it we'd probably only have one, getting complex with the printing on keys can make it a bit costly and from what I understand - difficult. I know this sucks because in some cases people might want to mix their keys, but the price we pay for having sexy keys I guess

Yes I am, I main Zerg, maybe something like Fungal for F. But I have time to think about this later on.

it'd be freaking awesome.

Would be cool, but I play on grid so every damn skill is on Z and X. All of them.
I've been debating whether or not to switch away from grid but I have too much muscle memory to really justify it imo. I don't really have a lot of misclick issues, it happens super rarely.
This could be p cool! I would definitely be interested in something like that :D
That'd be pretty badass, not gonna lie.

Yeah that's something that didn't occur to me... you grid folks (and other switch-layout style people) would be a bit left out... though I suppose you could still try and work something out. Obviously you could do something like purchase the keys, then put them in your keyboard as you saw fit. Could still work
I've seen custom made ones of these on reddit, but yes this is a good idea.
I use grid as well. The thing is once you've played enough you're probably not looking directly at your keys very often anyways (esp with grid layout) because the keys aren't moving. And with grid layout you can tell what key to use by the position on the little command grid thingy on the bottom right of the game screen. I think having them available would be nice. I could get a set and place them however I see fit. Note that once you've played a while the picture on the keycap won't affect your play much, I think it would just be there to make me feel like a nerdbamf lol
edit: I forgot to mention that I play on a laptop currently so while this idea is awesome I wouldn't be able to take advantage
This would look cool, but nobody actually looks at their keyboard whie playing? This is purely for cosmetic purposes, right? I can't really justify spending more than 2-3$/key just for the cool factor... and unless you're mass producing these, the keys will probably run higher than that...

Nerdbamf... I like that. I hope to see that more often :D

You're certainly right - that's why I'm looking at interest first. If it's only a small minority that would be interested I'll just leave it be, and I'd suggest those folks head over to Geekhack to get them. But if there is a fair interest in it I can talk to some people and see what we can do about a larger production and making it more cost-effective. Thanks for your feedback <3

10/10 would bang... wait, what? Yes, thats a great idea. My one concern is that I have lights on my keys ATM.
I would love to see - S - pic of SCV, E - pic of Probe, and D - pic of Drone. Also spell icons would be sweet, and even building ones since I usually hotkey the same buildings to the same number.

Might as well come out of the closet. It's for the best. Besides, being a geek is NOT something you want to ambush a significant other with.

I'd definitely like a protoss symbol to replace my 'A' key

I have no idea what's going on with this now...
Back on track - looks like generally the feeling is good - please encourage your friends/teammates to post here so I know the level of interest, really hoping to get this going but I need to see a lot of support. Thanks guys and gals <3

Does anyone know where I can get one of these keycaps?
This could be cool. My only thought is that if its purely aesthetic then it's all fine. But if its like a training thing for one to press the keys of certain abilities then it becomes more limited to me as you typically arent looking at the keyboard when playing.
that would be awesome!! Id love just a couple to jazz up my keyboard- and to go with my new mouse!!
I would totally buy some of these once I get the money for it.
I want a TL Key Cap =/
As cool as it would be, considering you'd be having to deal with rows and stuff, unless people were all using one of the default type layouts, you might have trouble getting em to match.
if I may, I'd suggest adding a poll to the OP to make gathering data on the interest of these easier for you.
I'd fucking do it.
Just have them, please, be available in a selection of colors. FYI, I wouldn't buy them if I couldn't get in either red or black to match my WASD Keyboard setup.
I for one wouldn't waste money on something so pointless. Cute little idea, but it won't be making anybody a millionaire.
This is a great idea. I would certainly buy one if ever. T = Stim , S = SCV, Etc.

The idea of keycaps is you can stick an SCV keycap on your ESC button if it makes you happy... S = SCV if an SCV keycap exists and you choose pluck out your S key and replace it with the SCV. I foresee a minor inconvenience. You don't own the rights to these symbols, and I think I know who does...

That is a very good point, I didn't think of that. I'll do my best to see if we can do this.
I'm not really interested in it honestly, but then again...Not really interested in the TL cap.
While that pic looks pretty cool, it would stick out like a sore thumb on my black desk, black keyboard, and black monitor
I'd buy it. Max $20 for a whole zerg set. Anything higher and I have to pass.
I would throw much monies at the screen to have my T key replaced by a syringe!
Yes, yes, and yes. I'd change my whole keyboard if possible :D
design a freaking attack button for protoss and protoss one is done
User was temp banned for this post.

Best idea in the thread!
A troll face "c" would also be quite enjoyable.

I think he actually missed the point. He probably thought you were hoping to make money this way, instead of what I'm reading, which is a group buy to end up getting them cheaper.

Oh my gosh, ah Pylon or Probe button would be so cute ))
but i guess it would be a bit too much money for me to order it from Australia, cause it is like a cute accessoir but not really a necessity ;;

Awesome thank you for the feedback - still thinking about costs so that helps :D

It's not even that either - I'm just looking to see if there would be a market for it. I'm assuming it would be small, and I'm not trying to make money at all, just wondering, because I can talk to some people. Hopefully it would help support esports a little

Resurrecting this thread after I just purchased my TL keycap -- I would totally be interested in purchasing other custom keycaps of this sort. You noted "skill" in the thread title -- what about like league symbols (Bronze - Grandmaster)? That would be pretty fun.
I would definetly be interested in buying some zerg/league key caps. I have a few friends that have been wanting some aswell!
I'd be very interested. If you do go ahead with it, people would buy it for the novelty factor alone.
This is very interesting... It would be very nice if WASD could split up an order and send to multiple locations on their custom keycaps. If we assembled 20 or so people willing to pay for the same mass order, I'd bet they give us a discount similar to the mass purchase one they have already.
The other option is one person having WASD make a bunch and then reselling/reshipping which I assume they would hate.
I'd love a keycap for T (stim) for Terran. I would surely buy it.
I made some of these myself when customizing my DT-35 - my E key is a probe, my T key is the storm icon, etc. They're all raised up on plastic I applied so I can feel them, except for F because it has a bump on it. I have "3d" icons on my number keys as well, for my control group scheme. If anyone wanted to do something similar DIY, I could help, I rearranged the hell out of my keys and with tin snips, a sheet of thin plastic, super glue, and some other stuff I bought online (including extra blank keys with a bump (like F, J, and numpad 5) and a sheet of SC2 icon stickers) added pictures of units/abilities that I can feel the difference between without looking at the keyboard. It has actually helped me to be a lot faster, because all of the important keys have a specific "feel" from the shape of the icon on top. It looks cool, too.
shut up and take my money!!!!!
Skill replacement? I'm always up for some of that!
I don't want to crash the party, but, if you're looking at your keyboard, or otherwise spending any time and thought on what button to push instead of doing it absolutely from memory, you're sucking. I'm into customization and aesthetics, and support custom keycaps on that front as an enthusiast. But keycaps as having the potential to enhance your SC2 play is definitely invalid. Seeing people get excited for having a probe key or a storm key is cute, but misguided, as I'm pretty sure that their brain will always be thinking "p" or "t" because that's the way we interface with the entire keyboard, and it has already been ingrained in how we game with it. You won't have time to notice and appreciate the caps in game, and I doubt that a real-world observer is ever going to stare at your special key with anticipation.
It's funner as an idea than a thing scrutinized, let alone invested in.
