Since sweden has already has its Barcraft (i think), hell, it's about time to have one in Finland as well.
Homestory Cup 4 takes place from 5th of january untill 8th, and this presents an opportunity for some starcraft 2 action in a pub. On sunday the 8th, a pub called Maltainen Riekko in Alppila, Helsinki (Aleksis Kiven katu 56), will open its doors for Starcraft 2 fans from 15:00 onwards (local time). The pub is accessible by two trams and a train station is relatively close as well.
The event is free to attend. However since it is organized in a pub, fans under 18 cannot attend.
If you have any questions regarding the event, feel free to contact me via pm in team liquid, eme_ @quakenet or by e-mail elmerinick at gmail.com
*EDIT* BarCraft Helsinki now on facebook!
BarCraft Helsinki http://www.facebook.com/groups/264540346941609/
Barcraft Helsinki: HSC4 event - Remember to do the RSVP, will make a lot easier to determine wether the event needs some extra effort. (eg a possible extra TV, notify the bar staff of a huge amount of people pouring in etc. all in all to make it easier to make the event as enjoyable as possible) http://www.facebook.com/events/207831842639224/

i've got a feeling that like 5 people show up and then it's really akward. Are you sure people are coming?
|
Esport is not so big here so i dont think it would work here...
|
Not with that attitude Snettik. BarCraft Stockholm has over a thousand members because they went out their way to spread the message, and people came as a result. Not reason why Helsinki can't replicate that success.
Most important thing you need to do is create a community for your barcraft. Currently, most does so by creating a facebook group. Other social media that has been used with various levels of success include meetup, subreddit, and twitter.
Next, do any or every of the following, with the items with most impact listed first:
|
It's all about spreading the word. I'm pretty sure there's more than five Starcraft players in Helsinki. You (or all of us) just have to get them together! Facebook etc is much more effective way for that than TL, but I'm sure you know that already. I'll take a few friends with me and come check it out at least.
|

OH GOD! I so want to come! (Only an hour away in Lahti).. hmm I need to evaluate my budget and see if this is possible..
|
The more the merrier, hope to have you there!
|
I'll be there if I'm in town for sure. I will also notify my buddies and try to drag one or two with me. Never been in the place though, so I hope it has (big) enough screens.
|
I think I'll pay a visit, showing starcraft in a bar sounds like a great idea. Who will be casting anyway?
|
Will definetly spread word about this to my friends, but im not able to attend myself.
|
Wish I lived in Helsinki.
|
Well I'm certainly interested, if theres anyone between Pori and Helsinki who's willing split my gas bill while driving there or not willing but want's a ride pm here or write it here!
|
Unfortunately i can't attend myself but i wish you guys best luck. Hopefully you guys get lot ppl in there ^^.

Same here. Maybe we should have one in Rovaniemi? :D
|
Has been placed on sett.fi by eme as well. Should increase the reach. Good luck with it
Edit: Posted it on the Paragon boards. It is WoW, but it has a good reach
|
I will try to be therer. Nice to see people taking initiative and organizing stuff like this.
|
Sounds absolutely fantastic!
Headlines of January 9th: "Over a hundred people have been hospitalized as the result of what's now called 'The Esports Blood Bath'". =P

Still not even close to when Finland won the hockey championship.

I remember that.. Some Finns up near the border of Sweden actually crossed it just to get into a fight, lmao.
On topic again.. I would totally be there if I wasn't a poor student who can't afford the train ticket, let alone a hotel for the night. =(

Same here. Maybe we should have one in Rovaniemi? :D
Yeah, be very afraid of the 10 people that appear! :D

One friend of mine who lived around the Tornio area said there were people packed up into cars with baseball bats and such crossing the border. Serious shit dat ice hockey!!111

Well, at least I know there are someone playing sc2 in Rovaniemi. That's a starters xD

Actually train costs a bit more than driving a car. : / And, if you take a train from pori to helsinki it will go to tampere first so it will take a few hours more too.
|
I can't come but I hope this is a success. It's probably a good idea to promote these events at schools since students are a big audience. I'm sure a lot of them are interested in coming with a bunch of their mates (not sure if the semester has started yet though).
Also, people, don't be shy about attending. Pre-drink that bottle of vodka if that's what you need, but GO
|
Too bad i don't live near Helsinki
|
Daumn, I live in oulu, and even the timing appears to be a little unfortunate. Really glad to see barcrafting kick off in finland though! And I will surely attend to one as soon as I can.
Also, I was thinking of putting up a barcraft this summer here up north, but that is not relevant yet.

Promoting in schools is a good idea. Heck, in my class of 25 people, 5 play starcraft, and 2 follow it otherwise. GOGOGO, find all yer friends in UNI/Lukio/amis
And a bottle of vodka may be too little to overcome the social awkwardness.

Moving to Helsinki on 2nd of january, so this comes at perfect timing for me. I will definately try to make it there.
|
I'm definitely thinking of attending and I might try to drag some friends along as well
|
Nice to see we get some starcraft activity around here. Can't attend myself because im under 18, but hope it goes well

I had to do this as soon as I read that :D
But more on topic, barcraft in Helsinki sounds like fun. I don't think I can drag any of my friends there (cuz they don't like sc2, bastards), dunno if I'll come solo, we'll see .
|
A shame, I live in Rovaniemi but im at Lapinjärvi now and it would be only like 1½h travel and I have to work those days. I'll try to keep up the spirit out here! Btw I hope we could see some pics/vids from the event after homestory ends GL guys!
|
|
I would love to see more barcrafts in Finland so I'm going to attend this one I'm going to tell about this to a couple of my friends that are a bit interested in sc. Hopefully they will attend too.
|
I'm definitely going to be attending this one. What's better than talking Starcraft with complete strangers over a beer or twelve?
Hope to see as many people there as possible! :D

|
nice to see this happening in finland too! gotta drag couple friends with me.
|
Would definitely attend if I were of age, but I'll be with you in spirit any way!
|
I'll come if I can. Still gotta see if its gonna fit the budget, although I suppose train tickets from Tampere aren't that expensive. If anyone is driving through I'd be happy to fork some moneys over for gas and a one way trip to Helsinki.
|
+1 Attending at least for the finals.
|
I was waiting for someone to take the initiative for Finnish barcraft scene, will be there. Should be some good memories for me before enlisting to the army on 9th.
|
I am coming and I know of 3-5 or even more of my IRL friends that are coming. Also I know a lot of finninsh esports / pro guys are coming.
|
Damnit, Helsinki is just too far away.

I currently reside in Oulu and I never even dreamnt of a barcraft so close to the arctic circle. You're keeping my hopes up!
Sadly again, going to Helsinki for barcraft is too much for me. Finland is very expensive as it is.

I'm really trying to get the money aside for this.. train fares are so damn expensive.

I was giving a lecture in my Finnish university on evolution (of microbes) few months ago and used Korean progamers, Zergs and Hydralisks as example organisms/communities. I saw quite many of the guys start whispering to each other afterwards, so I believe starcrafters may be more common among students than we even know. Just put out some initiatives on establishing local Starcraft groups or something. Given Finnish drinking habits, expanding those groups into Barcraft events should not be hard. I'd be happy to join any event myself if the timing and location are convenient.
Good luck, hopefully lots of people will show up.

Actually there is a gaming club in University of Helsinki. We met around 10 times this autumn and played mostly HoN and Starcraft II, but we also met for drinks / go to eat and talk about games and esports. At the moment around 10-15 different people attended the events, simultaneously 3-8, so next spring we try to get people even more active.

Drink a bottle of vodka before you go in ---> smaller temptation to buy expensive beer

Thats nice. Uni of Helsinki has always had a nice collection of clubs for different things (at least when I was studying there). Hopefully someone has the courage to try establish those gaming communities in other universities too.

It was absolutely amazing! :D
The place was packed by the time the first game was over and more and more people poured in during the finals. Unfortunately I had to leave in order to actually get home due to public transit, but I must admit, it was absolutely astonishing. It's like Eme said, he nor the participants never expected the place to be filled to the brim. We assumed a max of 20 people.
All in all, the atmosphere was so great with people getting louder when something exciting happened and the whole bar clapped when a game ended. With that, I'm definitely going to set money aside for the next one in order to be able to stay much longer.
Hats off to you, Eme, great job! <3

Thanks a LOT to all participants. The community came out big time. Unfortunately the bar closed before the finals, but none the less, the event was great. We could have done a lot of things better, but atleast we know what to improve the next time. Feedback is always appreciated!
