QFT. Lurking is an art-form that is sorely missing now-a-day.
Liquipedia is the greatest invention since the slice-bread - use it often; useful it wisely.

Don't be too quick to judge anything.

The whole "reading the whole thread" thing was mentioned a few times, but I'd make a couple amendments to it.
Read the OP (yes, every single word. If it was long and confusing, read it again after you just read it, to make sure you didn't miss something; if you don't care enough to do this, then you shouldn't be posting). If the topic is less than 10 pages or so, read every single page and every single post. If it's a super long topic, then read the first 5 pages, and the last 5-10 pages (nobody is seriously going to read every page of a 400 page thread if they haven't been following it merely to join the discussion ). After you write your post, read the whole thing to yourself. Are you contributing something to the thread that, had someone else written it, you'd feel made the thread more useful/a better place? If not, just delete the thing and move on.
I have 4100ish posts, but I must've started writing like 15000+ .

Go exploring. There are so many features that are not immediately obvious or sections that can't be found by just following the headings on the left bar. There are so many great contributions and content and so many great and useful guides out there it's almost unbelievable.
For example how many people know about the Article section? Or the Featured threads?
Start with visiting this link (the general forum) and replace the 1 on the end with a higher number as you go on. Who knows where it will take you. Perhaps by some fluke or error you can even access the secret "Men in Red" staff forum.

Read the 10 commandments (it's your job to find them). Wait a month before posting and within the first week you should be noticing bans and warnings for unusual things. When you do start posting, stay away from the SC2 strategy for a bit longer.
|
Before you post something, ask yourself something. "Will i get warned/temped/banned for this post I am making?" If the answer is anything except no, don't post (Especially if you are one of those people who think the mods ban for nothing, don't post at all).

If you're gonna make a post about what music videos you've masturbated to in the Kpop thread do it on your first post.
To, you know, get any anxiety or butterflies out of the way so you can feel free to contribute with a clear conscience :X
|
If it doesn't contribute or add anything to the subject, in most cases you should reconsider posting.
|
dont post anything until youve been reading for a month. you'll save yourself a lot of trouble and embarrassment.
|
Don't open a thread as your first post unless it is something in the Tech Support sub-forum AND only after you have searched for a similar topic AND have tried to fix the problem yourself before posting.

Go check out Liquipedia, its one of the best resources for Starcraft info out there, esp for tournament and player info. I used it for MLG instead of using MLG's own website.

In all seriousness, this is good advice. More specifically, lurk and learn the culture before barging right in. I've always liked Manifesto's analogy of being invited into someone's house... you're going to tread the waters lightly before you figure out how things work, that's how it should be here.
|
I still usually only lurk and read stuff, I think it is really good advise to just not post at all for about a month. This way you can learn how TL is very different from most of the internet and that it will take you time to learn the quality of posts expected here. Which leads into another good thing to know: TL is not 4chan, so leave the trolling and memes there, don't bring them to team liquid.

Think really, really hard before you make a thread. I learned this the hard way, sorry again iNcontroL

I cannot emphasize this enough. (Maybe because I am a chronic lurker... +1 years of lurking before I get involved in forums.) But seriously, there's been a few perhaps well-meaning posters that got shut down because they had absolutely no clue about the culture of TL and TL's standards. As a result they formed a negative opinion of TL because they felt they were behaving appropriately. A couple threads got opened like this : Confused about rules and community, but because they had already been 'hurt' they couldn't be reasoned with. Whereas, if they had spent a couple weeks or even a month or two getting a feel for what's considered acceptable and not (ban lists are good places to hang out.), the entire issue could have been avoided.
This is the value I see in TL's high standards and why I continue to hang out in TL:
a lot of people come here to get away from the rest of the internet But when new people jump in and post without gauging the audience, they are met by our first lines of defence and wonder how TL is such a community when they seem so hostile. The problem is the newbie's entrance. TL's defences are there for a reason else we would've been swarmed a long time ago. (Chill's aching bones meme comes to mind.)
Also, everyone should know who is Boxer and the meaning of Taek-Bang Leessang. And maybe a few other greats. Know your history and your elders and appreciate it/them!

edit: And don't write anything like "umad?" or something that makes you look stupid, a lot of people come here to get away from the rest of the internet. This works, although I'd say maybe 5% of users actually read the entirety of an OP at the moment so having people read the whole thread is somewhat optimistic.
Yeah, I unfortunately don't like reading an entire thread which would take a few hours, plus the thread also expands in that time. So I might start reading when it's 48-pages long but by the time I'm done it might be over 100...

The easiest way to find the Automated Ban List is to hit the 'Closed Threads' link at the bottom left. And just in general the Closed Thread link is amazing.
