I think that the most important thing, and what makes TL special, is to recognize that this is not just a webpage but an actual community. It has a culture and social norms, and you need to be familiar with them to engage in the community in a way that isn't abrasive to other members. It's well worth spending a few weeks or months in read-only mode to get to know TL before jumping in and taking part in the discussions.

I also think it's very important to bring a large dose of humility when you start posting on TL. We're all smart about something, but very, very few of us are as smart about Starcraft as the established members of this community. It's very worthwhile to spend some time thinking before you post anything SC related: Do I 100% know that this is correct? And still to be ready to admit that you're wrong when a more knowledgable member of the community points out the flaws in your thinking.

As somebody said, don't use.. the B word... unless you're referring to somebody who is *officially* a bonjwa. Even then, it's probably smart to only use it when talking about NaDa, boxer, or somebody else who it is impossible to have anything but love for.

Seriously, I once saw a forum newbie talk about how Destiny and Spanishiwa should be great "bon jwas" (HE PUT A SPACE BETWEEN BON AND JWAS, WHAT THE FUCK?), and he was KILLED verbally by the collective of TL.

If you have a hobby, chances are some people on TL share it, and chances are there are people on TL who made a comprehensive thread on it.

TL is also a great place to pick up and learn new things. I always search TL along with Google and Wikipedia.

Chill, get out of the mindset that anything you say is acceptable, and think if you'd be willing to tell what you want to post to a complete stranger face to face.

Grudgematches are the best way to bond with people via chat, they often result in hilarious bets as well
HawaiianPig is the artist behind some of the most awesome news posts you'll find on the site, and the imagery behind Elly as well,
IRC has some awesome conversation happening when you come in most of the time, and a hilarious thread containing the best lines from it also exists as well

Very few people actually get Forum Stars, but if you want to strive for one, leverage what you do know or have and be very good at it; it can be for something as complicated as SC2Gears, or as demanding on bandwidth as maintaining nevake for the Brood War video archive
Writing Teams for BW and SC2 can always use community contributions to help out, even if it's just a team or player feature you are going mad over
Xeris, MLGSundance, John the Translator in behalf of GOMTV and many other community event organizers have TL accounts and post official event news on them; be respectful of their contributions to the game, and be open and articulate with any criticism with regards to running their events
