Sorry I had to leave early, I was kinda hoping to check out the old Netolic place before we left. Rob, why didn't we go there? I know we went there and the place was still really big...I can't remember our reason for not using the place. Actually I think it was price for the PCs? Back then we still paid the hourly rate for our LANs and prizepools were only donations though..hm. We didn't use the place because 1. they wouldn't answer their phone, 2. didn't have a website, 3. TOLD me they were going out of business (when they were really just changing management or something?) 4. was really hard to find the place from the street having to go through some back ally up some stairs to the 2nd floor of some random building following signs for a $5 haircut through some doors... at that time when we visited them I felt the entire situation was far too unstable to plan lans around, I had no idea if I was going to show up next week and the place would be empty...Things could have changed in the past few years since I've been there though but I always keep assuming the place went out of business lol.

it was a fun tournament, i only stayed for the groupstages since I lost to sindread in the tiebreaker for 2nd place. Regardless, my only complaint was I had 3 ZvZ's (i hate ZvZ). also not gonna lie was creepin' on avilo since I sat next to him and was actually interesting to see that Terran's actually use their keyboard. Aaaand Sadistx sorry man you were deep in games and I didn't feel like sticking around with the serial killer owner there..

You came on Teamliquid with a tone that was as an honest critique. "I didn't really have that much fun-" well, sorry you didn't, it certainly isn't everyone's ideal environment. But then you post "Phucking failnament imo" in the reddit meet-up group and I'm not quite sure I can respect that. The tournament itself went smoothly. Everyone played their games in a reasonable time (except avilo who plays hour long games) and the organizers kept things going. Everything was standard. I don't know if you were expecting some kind of GSL/MLG production but for a tournament ran by ~3 guys on an internet forum thread, you certainly have to manage your expectations. As for the social aspect, I know what its like to enter a crowded environment and not know many people. When I first joined the local TL/DC community, it took me a few get-togethers to warm up to everyone, but I didn't go posting hate after my first shy night. The purpose of the meet-up group (reddit thing for any bystanders reading) was so that you could go in knowing some people in advance, but while I find Isai and Tim, you never found any of us. You say that nobody responded well in chat- aside from not seeing much there, I tend to think people would socialize with their mouths when they're within 100feet of someone rather than typing. If you heard more than the sound of keyboards during your entire stay there, that means there were conversations and people to talk to and meet and hang out with. I'm not a social enigma by any means, i'm the shyest guy on the planet, but you really just have to say hello. I dont know. I just don't think "Phucking failnament imo" is an appropriate response. The tournament was average, but people had fun anyway. It had its hiccups and its imperfections, but I'd like to think most people walked out of there having had fun. edit: In less aggressive news, grats avilo once again :O I will apologize for the failnament comment. In my defense, I tried to use honest critique here instead of nerd raging about why I was disappointed. I do not see any good in just complaining about everything. But truthfully I was pretty pissed when I returned. I was not local, I found out about this in the DC meetup group which I joined in case anything interesting related to SC2 was held within driving range. Lets go back to the original quote that I made. DC lan's are epic and awesome, Ipp will be casting the entire event from location with tv monitors setup for observing. Anyone of any skill level can participate in the tournament, we encourage everyone to play or at least come out and spectate and hang out with other TL members and sc2 players! I drove 4 hours to this tournament. IPP did not cast the ENTIRE event, only a few games out of the total, that is misleading. Yes, you do encourage any skill level to play, but I expected my first few games would be against someone my own league. I was OK with me losing to much higher league players though, but then being kicked off the computer makes that NOT OK. I just paid $20, plus the 4 hour drive in gas, to lose to some higher league players, which was not casted, in a small room with a computer than ran SC on like medium graphics. Yes, I'm a little annoyed at this. Also, I was typing in the channel because I was trying to FIND some of the people I knew in that room from the DC meetup group. I cannot just walk in and go OH HAY THERE IS ISAI! I was also talking with the guys beside me, and that was the most fun I had the entire time. I really enjoyed the conversations I had. Anyone that came in that area I said hello and introduced myself, Im sure if they read this post they can vouche for that. However, I cannot just go around while people are in a game and just start talking to them. I just kinda wish come introducing would happen when you first arrive. So, in my summary, I would say this IS a really really good thing for locals or pros that have a high chance at winning. But for someone like me, the description is way too misleading and killed my Saturday. I typed the failnament remark when I first got back because I was pissed at the time, but truthfully I wish this tournament the best, just maybe be a little more realistic in the description.

Everyone still contributes 20$ for the lan expenses and the tourney win money.

Also the LAN center controls the PC usage, not us. And if it matters, we are very unhappy with the PC center's time nazi-isms. They never used to be this way, and to be honest they could just reserve that "island" of computers and let us use all the other ones and it'd be fine. As far as the leagues of people attending - I don't sort groups based on anything but random placings. Sometimes we have the top 200 people sorted out into different groups but I don't know who's bronze or who's masters. ![]() I made an MSL group D in my own LAN lololol

BTW, as much of a genius torenhire is, he can't check up on everyone's profile to pair the matches fairly. P.S. the august lan center is being built as we speak, so I don't think its the one you have been to previously

@ Salvex - I could totally see how driving that far for this event would be disappointing. All lans have technical difficulties and it sucks you didn't get to see all the games casted or keep a PC the whole time. If you had stayed until the end you would have been able to observe some deep stage games in the couch area and chat with players. I don't see how you're upset about playing higher players. Common knowledge dictates that brackets are/should generally be set up randomly. The ad said that players of all levels are welcome, not that they would be out in full force, so I don't see what's misleading about that. Kill your Saturday? You seem like you're still frustrated but I'm glad you did have some fun ![]() @ organizers - thanks again for doing this. Just an fyi, I have experienced a lot of racism at Korean gaming rooms in Annandale in years past but perhaps things have changed now. My brother has hosted 30 person lans at my house in Manassas many times before... it might very well be possible to hold an event here in the off chance people would be willing to drive here :-).

As for the brackets, I know different match ups make for more interesting games but I think they pretty much have to be random or you're just going to run into problems although albarn's idea seems worth thinking about, i.e., random groupings for certain levels and winners advance to the upper groups (also randomly assigned). Something along those lines perhaps would help diversify the field. @ Salvex - I could totally see how driving that far for this event would be disappointing. I mentioned that I did not mind losing quickly to the higher players, I assumed I'd lose quickly anyway. I was only saying it would be nice to have league pairing at the start so lower league players might get a little more game time. Or, some way for lower league players to play games with each other after they've been eliminated.

@CaucasianAsian - I wish had thought of just paying the rate, I fail at life. Although I'm not sure that keeps the staff from murdering you in the parking lot if they think you're pretty.

@Torenhire, I do think that the place is called Netolic...can't really remember though. They are under new management and is currently renovating the place. Redmage and I visited the place and really like what we saw. However, Lucky is right that the place is not very visible from the main road. But, I think it will be a better environment for future tournaments and events given that they have a lot of PCs and there won't be any conflict with occupying PCs for regular customers . I think with the popularity of the DC LAN tournaments, we have out grown Cyber Ground. @Arkansassy, Yea those are all the same person. I have an identity problem ![]()

Bronze-Diamond tournament and a Masters/GM tournament. Of course this introduces a whole bunch of possible things that would have to be sorted out, not only would we require a larger venue but we would need additional volunteers to help run and keep organized of course........also prize pots would be skewed. ah so much work to do things right....I need to quit playing competitively so I can focus fully on organizing stuff the way I envision. ^^
