Groups are made: A-D please start playing ASAP. Once you are done with your groups, let the evening folks (E-H) get on a PC so they can play. I will keep the groups updated on the website, please report wins in the DC LAN chat channel.
DC lan's are epic and awesome, Ipp will be casting the entire event from location with tv monitors setup for observing. Anyone of any skill level can participate in the tournament, we encourage everyone to play or at least come out and spectate and hang out with other TL members and sc2 players!
I like what I see. If that's the case, you can just send the money to my paypal. I should get it in a couple years when my internet connection catches up.
Also, why don't we have MorningMusume11 doing interviews?!

I prefer people to email so I can send out a mass reminder to everyone more easily, I used to do TL pm's but it's annoying because you can't bcc people.
Anyway a post here or an email is fine, posting here will get you on the list faster because I'm on TL more than I'm checking that email lol :D
More signups for this plzzz! Going to be totally epic!! Ipp casting + Me organizing = best lans ever. even if ur not planning on playing come out and obs/chill with ppl!

Sup Son what up stim, 4v4 pros son, thats how we roll dawg!! suuuu wooop suuuuu woop
On a Side note, if you are reading this thread then you must make it your job to sign up for the tourney or if your more into watching then just let everyone know your coming to observe, either way the more people that come the more fun the whole experience is, So when your finished reading this post, check your calendar any thing other then life or death can be cancelled so that you can make time to go to the two yr aniversary of the dc lan experience, then you post your bnet id and id code ex. hooktits.619
Then the most important part, when the date rolls around don't puss out and get scared we want every one to come and have a great time so in that case if you signed up, make sure that you show up! If you happen to be having a baby that day or dying of some rare disease, in that case we can give you a pass to miss this one but other then that, I don't care if you gotta walk the dogs, I don't care if they have been holding their peepees and poops in all day you gotta come to this lan, so get mommy or grand pappy to get their lazy ass up and take care of the dogs for you, And if you can't drive then tell Mommy drive me to this lan no matter how far away it is and you will cut the grass and vacuum the house and everything else you have to do, to get your loving mother to take your nerd ass to the cybergrounds lan center so that you can come to the soon to be most epic lan experience to date!!!
come on Jaedong said he really wants you to go! and how could you upset jaedong! T.T
That was the longest Hatchetwound post that TL has ever seen, holy shit.
Now cpeter123 just needs to write more than two sentences and we'll have made history with this LAN.
WE REQUIRE MORE PARTICIPANTSSSSS (zerg meenerallsss voice)

Just get out.
I will let Rob make the "official" call on the MLG map pool, HOWEVER I would say we are likely going to conform to whatever MLG is running at the time. Probably safe to assume no Typhon Peaks.
Maybe we'll just not remove Typhon and add in Dual to the pool, and have em both.
Faaaaaack, I wish I could make this one, but I'm gonna be in Finland. Sucks, cuz I missed the last one too. Ah well, hopefully there'll be one more before I leave for school.

Nooooo terrannnnn, but it's okay since he's a wc3 dude
I'll come watch and I'm bringing my friend but you guys scared him off of signup. He's masters league and he was like omgah these guys are all super pro and there are a bunch of grandmaster here I've heard of.. -__-x he real scared lol
lol sadly I think that's been the trend lately...I try to make a nice format so everyone will get a decent amount of games vs different ppl (group or double elimination) which gives everyone a chance to compete/try their best but it seems like people just are stopping signing up.
we need to workout some sort of NYC Cybercraft Vs. DC Cyberground online tournament. with the entry recquirement being that you must have attended the respective LAN to compete.
it could be a 64 man double elimination with the top 32players from each side.

We've got Avilo, we win.
Or at least that's the way our LANs work :p
we have Pokebunny as well as FXOmoonan + FXOSloG
as well as a few other GM's and highly ranked masters. I think we would be ok
Then again NY has pokebunny so it'd be a big TvT fest
PS: Moonan and Slog aren't even in NY right now anyways lol, how would that be fair. We've had Slog Gretorp and lastshadow show up to our lan's before doesn't mean we can include them in our lineup haha

with pokebunny and moonan, we've had exclusively terran championships. @_@
I didn't see it but the back right wheel got nailed by a car going like 25 mph so the whole rear axle is bent and the side of the bed is just crashed inward as well.
We always seem to synchronize car troubles. Someone hit my car in the parking garage on Friday which is why I wasn't really feeling up to going to dinner. Mine is still fine to drive though, just nice and scratched up on the side.
I might be coming to this lan though I'm skeptical that I'll play since I haven't touched sc in a while. If I have a random bout of inspiration then perhaps i'll give my money away, we'll see
well if it's done in time i might be able to make it. It's basically they have to get a new axle, and new panels for the passenger side of the car. So they have to order new parts, add it on, and paint it.
Psh. Have that thing towed down here and I'll put on a new axle. That's ez stuff.
Panels are tougher but that's pretty cake too. Hardest thing they've got to do is make sure they don't do a terrible paint job.
also my coworker has an SC:BW sound on his phone and has no idea what it is. His phone rings and it goes "beeeep incoming transmission, comm-link established" And I was like BROODWAR? and he's like...no that's the commissioner?
OMG I used to have that ringtone on my old phone for receiving text messages. It was awesome. Whenever I get a text: "Receiving incoming transmission" in the voice of the old sc1 terran-base lady.
LMFAO that's actually pretty great. if you get btways permission (I'm sure she's cool with it) you have mine and likely everyone else's blessing. hahaha

Exactly, which is why it was so silly to ask for it in the first place.
Unless we rig Shadow into a group of 2-porting terrans.
Chris, if your car is fixed and you can give me a ride, I'll go :O also are you back in the area or whats the deal, it looks like you go to nerd dinner every week or something.
Just sent my email! LXG is all about these DC LAN i'm having 3 other members send emails this week as well! The last LAN i was able to film so footage and posted up a video on my youtube channel so i'm all about bringing my camera again this time and maybe even doing a couple interviews with people ^^
I may or may not be able to play, depending on what's going to happen to my eyes after the corneal reshaping i start this week. If not, it's coaching all the way down!

If there are free computers not used by tournament participants, you can do whatever on them afaik. People who get knocked out usually play team games or screw around in UMS
Actually the lan center has really cracked down on that now you can't be on a PC unless your playing in the tournament or actually paying as a regular customer.
Yea, the lan center has adopted this odd disdain for potential customers / revenue streams. Regardless the tournament should be a lot of fun. I'll be coming to harass toren and rob!
Torenhire we need to make an executive decision, do we break it up into morning and afternoon groups or do one massive double elim bracket ?
so far we have 39 signed up, a bit too many to all play at once considering we have like 35 pc's or so and I think the lan center reserves 5 now so we're down to like 30 that can be playing concurrently.
Okey so my Ride has been in the shop for almost a week and a half and today i finally got the call that it is finished so i just lucked out almost didnt have a ride... Wouldnt wanna have to flip all the tables in the lan center if i couldnt make it ^_^ cant wait son see ya all tommorrow
Since we have 38 people signed up to play and I'm sure a few of them wont show and a couple others are showing but I'm not 100% they are playing in the tournament (sadistx? hazelynut?) we should be able to fit everyone on at once so we should be straight for everyone to arrive at 11am-noon with tournament starting at around noon or so.
worst case is we have to hold a couple groups while early groups play. We will build the groups as people check in tomorrow.
It's important to note that anyone coming and not playing in the tournament will not have guaranteed computer access due to space/pc limitations.

Isn't an executive decision an on-the-fly decision made by a non-in-charge person?
Seeing as I am the #2 (I am the shit, double meaning ftw) I shall executive my way to saying yes we should do groups. I'd wager we get 5-7 no shows or people who back out, but even so...we cut it REALLY close last time and I'd rather just play it safe. we're gonna be 30+ and that's enough for groups. If we were trying to put like 25 in, it'd be harder to make a choice.
So, that'smy thoughts. Also if you do homestory cup I'll use my awesome government salary to fly in all the top players, but we gotta get Sjow cause he's my favorite Swede. Deal? Deal.
Hey I gave you like 16 hours to respond you had to wait to respond at the very minute I figured you'd had enough time... LOL T_T
groups it is, we'll set em up as ppl check in. Hopefully not all 38 show up or we could get stuck with people waiting for pc's...not the worst thing in the world but it can make the lan much longer and have people waiting around alot.
Eh, the more people who show up around 11 the better. I am going to try my best to get our morning groups started by 12. If all 38 show up in the morning, than people can chill in the back or get some warm up games going on PCs that will not be used by people in the morning groups.

DC lan's are epic and awesome, Ipp will be casting the entire event from location with tv monitors setup for observing. Anyone of any skill level can participate in the tournament, we encourage everyone to play or at least come out and spectate and hang out with other TL members and sc2 players!
Maybe I just came at a very bad time, but this is misleading. I signed up to play, obviously not expecting to win but just for fun and to give me something to do besides JUST spectate. I mainly came to meet some other Starcraft players that are skilled, and converse a bit while watching games. However this environment is very poor for anything but playing against the assigned players. The room is small, crammed, and completely dark. There little communication going on between players, and there is not a real location for players to just converse and meet one another. Perhaps I just expected too much out of this, I don't know. If I had to give any advice from my experience, I would say do not come unless your local, or high masters or grandmasters league. This is not at all supportive of lower league players. I left for 15mins to grab some food, return to find I'm locked out of the computer I was at, the commentator had left, and the place was completely dead. Also, I was still logged into my account while being locked out of the computer. I had to do some very fast alt+tab spamming to close out of Starcraft.
To the guys that were responsible for arranging and carrying out this event, I am sorry for this negative reply, but it seems to be way too inviting for such little return. I do however think it has potential to be way better, so I wish you luck.

Most of that is because of the venue. It's hard to find a LAN center that isn't a smoker infested shithole, but Cybergrounds is FAR FAR better than the place where we used to hold these LANs before.
The couch and the TV is the area where you can converse tho Don't think thats a problem. The reason people try to get their matches over quickly is because the lan would take even longer otherwise.
I left for 15mins to grab some food, return to find I'm locked out of the computer I was at, the commentator had left, and the place was completely dead.
Locking people out of computers is their new retarded policy which we shouldn't stand for. The fact that the commentator left isn't a fault of any organizers that were present. We are usually featured on TL as an event and much better covered.
This is not at all supportive of lower league players.
Yeah, that's probably true, what did you expect in particular though? It's a competition first and foremost. We also usually go to dinner after the LAN, so that's another social place where you could chill

Well, I was hoping to first play against players in my own league. I played vs a grandmaster first, then two masters. I sort of assumed lower level players could continue to practice after being eliminated as well but I wasn't getting much of a response from the channel. Oh well, I'm starting to sound way to QQish XD. In summary, its just not what I expected.
Hey Salvex - I've gone to the last three and it seems people generally come to meet up with their particular group of friends and hang out/discuss the event etc. That said, I usually try to just keep to my group of friends but always end up meeting and talking strategy with some very cool people.
Not to sound like a shrink but did you make an effort to meet people?
Lans are generally small crammed and dark and I guess that's just the way it is for some reason . Just say "excuse me" and make your way. No big deal. I think next time I'm bringing a flashlight for setting up though.
The couch area (later on when the tournament is deeper) is definitely the place to meet people and observe some cool games.
The field is definitely pretty solid as a whole. Maybe you could bring some friends on your level to come and help diversify the field. I encourage my friends of all levels to come. Like you, I come just for the fun of it.
I'm totally with you about getting booted off the computers. I mean I'd be fine with getting up if the tournament was so big we needed to rotate computers, as long as I'd be allowed to sit at another computer when it opens up. I was under the impression that our buy-ins partly pay for a day/some number of hours of use on one computer at the cyber cafe. Yet today I was booted off my PC only to sit and wait out my friends' games while there are at least three empty computers right next to me. Not having a PC all/most of the day definitely takes away from "going for a day of video game fun" aspect. If we had the PC for the day it would be much easier to meet people, practice games, etc. I'm considering not attending anymore lans for this reason alone. If I'm going out there I want to be able to play some games for fun, browse the web, follow the tournament etc. I don't have time to play enough to consider going just with the intention of competing. So I agree that if they don't change this, it wont be an "all-levels" friendly event at all.
Anyway, you had some good points and I hope to see you at the next lan--
Yeah the biggest issue currently is that the LAN center is being a little ass backward in regards to their PC usage policies. A lot of people just play and leave because it can be rather dull sitting around for 8 hours waiting for the group stages to wrap up (and more importantly, waiting for delicious korean bbq). This contributes to the other issue you bring up in that more casual players aren't showing up. It's a lot more difficult to build community at these events when nobody can play once they're knocked out of the tournament...
Alas, it is what it is. We work with what's available around here
Are you really not allowed to play after you've been knocked out? I thought $10 of the entry fee went towards the prize pool and the other $10 went towards all-day access. I know the guy at the front desk walked around and was asking me if I was still in the tournament, but I didn't know he had planned to kick me off if I said no.
Also that guy is kind of a jerk and creepy, but who am I to judge. It really is still infinitely better than the other place.

Thanks for making that known, Sadistx. I agree. The organizers always have things... well ...organized. lol.
And when I'm watching the stream, there's people sitting on that couch, eating, laughing, talking, having fun.
Sorry, you had such a bad time of it, Salvex, but don't give up.

I think it's kind of because most of us know each other already. I meet at least 3-4 new people every LAN. Just get up and bother people during the LAN, haha. Despite everyone looking like they're in the zone, I have yet to meet someone who is like "yo dude gtfo" when you ask em about this or that in between matches.
I'm sorry the event wasn't up to your expectations, however as Sadistx said, the couch + casting area is the place to meet new people afterh the tournament. However we had some scheduling issues in this particular tournament which resulted in the casters leaving and that kind of lowered that. Thanks Redmage for setting up back there. I personally had to leave as I am leaving for a 6 hour drive in 30 minutes to get there by 7am. Sorry! :p
To address some other things, yes the LAN center is getting a little more strict on their PC policies. I hate having to bug people to get off their PCs when the LAN is over, because I disagree that we should have to pay "extra" when they already take half hte buy in. 20 dollars is a LOT to pay for a LAN. If we could do a 10 dollar or a 5 dollar buy in, I think a lot of lower league and further away players would come to play in the LANs. I think our 20 dollar buy in is why most of the turn out is people who have a legit chance at making it to 1-4th place.
However the LAN center is a business and we can't justify a no-pay situation (like they'd let us anyways) and if we lower the prize pool we're cutting the pool in half. Plus if they are only going to let us play for only tournament time, we'd have to get like...a 15 dollar buy in or something, which is even more dumb haha. I disagree that we should have to pay extra but it's on the LAN center to decide that, and if you've been to the last 3 to 4 LANs you can tell they are tightening the grip on us more and more. Sorry to be dramatic but it's what's happening. Rob and I might have a plan to remedy this. (DC Homestory sup)
Also after the LANs, and every Saturday night, we do a Korean BBQ dinner, 10 bucks for an endless amount of meat. THAT is the place to meet people, because as stated...the LAN is more of our competition half of social gatherings, and we have fun and chat about whatever at the dinners every weekend. Get yourself to the DC Weekly dinner thread and meet with us! There's about 8-10 "regulars" and the occasional new guy that comes to hang out with us but I think once you come to a dinner or two you'll start to see beyond the fact that it's not a good event for lower level players, and more that it's just to play with your friends in a tournament atmosphere.
Anyways, I saw Rob lost 9000 games to Avilo, that must have taken forever. Thanks again to everyone who came out, and thanks to all the players that put up with me being the "are you done on the PC" nazi that I hate being. <3

Aye. It was because we weren't an event, and the stream wasn't attracting anything as it was.
Also I am the manager of Tits Gaming, Arkansassy, we'll take care of Avilo until he finds a new team. He did tell you he joined, right?
Anyways, our usual event listers couldn't be reached for legit RL reasons, and Zlasher couldn't/wouldn't do it, so we didn't get tagged on the Calendar. I kind of disagree with Sadistx, Rob and I should have been less relaxed about getting it up there...we figured we could wait a bit until the groups started to steady out and Ipp would have enough games to cast. By the time we got to asking other mods outside our usual ones, we had already lost the cast, haha.
Anyways, it's not a huge deal. Yeah having no stream/cast in the back sucks, but it was still a great and fun event either way.

LOL! Yeah! I heard about the team last time. Avilo was thrilled to join, cuz he really likes Tits.
Man Salvex, I kinda hate to do this, but you've done something that's really rubbed me the wrong way. You came on Teamliquid with a tone that was as an honest critique. "I didn't really have that much fun-" well, sorry you didn't, it certainly isn't everyone's ideal environment. But then you post "Phucking failnament imo" in the reddit meet-up group and I'm not quite sure I can respect that.
The tournament itself went smoothly. Everyone played their games in a reasonable time (except avilo who plays hour long games) and the organizers kept things going. Everything was standard. I don't know if you were expecting some kind of GSL/MLG production but for a tournament ran by ~3 guys on an internet forum thread, you certainly have to manage your expectations.
As for the social aspect, I know what its like to enter a crowded environment and not know many people. When I first joined the local TL/DC community, it took me a few get-togethers to warm up to everyone, but I didn't go posting hate after my first shy night. The purpose of the meet-up group (reddit thing for any bystanders reading) was so that you could go in knowing some people in advance, but while I find Isai and Tim, you never found any of us. You say that nobody responded well in chat- aside from not seeing much there, I tend to think people would socialize with their mouths when they're within 100feet of someone rather than typing. If you heard more than the sound of keyboards during your entire stay there, that means there were conversations and people to talk to and meet and hang out with. I'm not a social enigma by any means, i'm the shyest guy on the planet, but you really just have to say hello.
I dont know. I just don't think "Phucking failnament imo" is an appropriate response. The tournament was average, but people had fun anyway. It had its hiccups and its imperfections, but I'd like to think most people walked out of there having had fun.
edit: In less aggressive news, grats avilo once again :O
thanks for coming out today everyone, I apologize the event didnt run as smoothly or successfully as my other events. it'll be some time before I'm back to run another lan. a multitude of issues recently have begun building up that will need to be addressed before I can run the kind of lan that I want to run. I will speak of these issues at another time, for now it's been a reallllly long day.

We'll see xD. For all the low levels btw, just work hard, man at my first lan (march-april), I was a gold ;3. I didn't win shit and I lost my first match at my first lan to my friend whom I came with ._. (stupid vile.illusion) anyways, now I'm diamond(extremely low masters-ish?) and was able to beat Sadistx 2 lans ago ;D (Sup son.) and accomplished my goal ;3. Who knows... Maybe I can beat Lucky LOL.

btw you should have seen how pissed I was getting during the 3rd place match against illusion, (illusion refused to coin flip for it and instead forced a bo5...) David was watching and rofling the whole series basically.
all the lan fails + having to play more tvt after getting mindfucked by avilo started me off on the wrong track going into the series, by game 4 I was basically losing it, ask david lmfao.

Hey everyone, first I want to say congratulations to Avilo for another victory. Great matches were played by everyone.
Now, onto the complaint about Cyber Ground. Yes I do think the new policy is lame and I have been talking to the owner about changing it. The smokey environment is another issue that I don't think will change. So, I have some good news. It's Gosu is currently scouting a new location for future DC LANs and we have found a perfect place. The area is twice/three times as big, newer PCs, have a great area for It's Gosu to host a "mini" parties so that people can socialize and meet new SC2 players, and they have a separate designated area for smokers!!!! We are planning to do a tournament in August at this new location once they are done building out the facility. So, please keep a look-out for us for the August tournament.

~70 up-to-date computers as well. its around annandale for people interested, its alot closer to il me buffet now
@ Nokarot - when they started doing the lans at this place you could pretty much use your computer all day or move to a computer later if yours was needed for the tournament. Also, it was clearly listed in one of the earlier event descriptions that 10$ of the buy-in goes towards having a PC to use throughout the event. As Torenhire mentioned, the cyber cafe is becoming increasingly worse about this and kicking you off later in the day if you're out of the tournament which is a definite deal killer for me.
I had a blast yesterday. I'm an old school SC/BW player going back 15 years ago. I don't really play video games anymore, and haven't really played much SC2, yet I'll play a few games the week before one of these lans so I can go have a little fun reliving my youth and hanging with friends without getting 0-3ed. Luckily I have a friend who still plays so I enjoy tracking his progress as well.
@Salvex - just a quick point. From my experience, I can say without a doubt that your game will improve immensely by actually being able to stand behind top players and watch how they play as opposed to only studying their replays. Both offer different things you can learn.
@Torenhire - 20$ isn't a crazy amount but if it included all day use of a PC I think that would easily make it worth it for more casual players to attend.
@Tethys - Perhaps a treadmill would be a better solution for you than fixing the AC in the place.
that's weird, why did they change it so they make you get off the computers? This was the first time at a lan there where the guy asked if i was not playing games to get off the computer or what not, and i'm like uhhhhh still playing games...
i thought the 20 covers the entire day or what not @_@ sorta lame they do that now =/

Great news Ozz, aka MiniMax aka...oh hell, I give up, but are you related to MiniMe? lol
Originally the deal I worked out with the lan center was each player pays $20, $10 covers lan center fees for the whole day (a price they have advertised on their website) and $10 goes to the prize pot. This was perfectly fine for 3-4 lans but a couple lans ago one of the co owners of the place came up to me and told me they had a situation that had happened during one of our lans, a bunch of regular customers of cybergrounds showed up during one of our lans (3rd or 4th one that I organized) and there were no pc's for them, they got all pissed and threatened to stop giving regular business to cybergrounds.
So now the lan center has begun reserving pcs PLUS really cracking down on whos on which pc and whos still playing in the tournament or not.
I've tried to circumvent this by telling cybergrounds to post or notify these core customers which saturday to expect extra traffic in the place, we only come once every other month at the most as it is anyway, but cybergrounds seems kind of unwilling to change anything for us they continue to restrict us it seems...
also a couple lans ago one of the coowners of the place came up to me and said:
"you dont have to answer this but do you think $10 per person is fair?"
I had no idea how to even begin to respond to that. but it was really uncomfortable considering I had this price worked out from the very beginning of negotiations before the very first lan at cybergrounds.
also the smoking issues are bad again which was one of the main reasons we ditched out of having lans at seoul pc (pre starcraft 2 days)
Ever since Mr. Kim has left things have seemingly gotten increasingly worse at least from an organizational standpoint on my end.
I mean if they want to continue being a shithole for the 10-12 asian gang member regulars who play Shit of Duty on loudspeakers and LOL on other pcs, they can do that. I thought LANs brought them extra advertisement and brought them closer to e-sports scene. If they had continued to be supportive of our lans, we could have expanded and brought in more pros, but now it's just a shit venue that none of the pros will ever come to.
Guess they don't see it that way. I hope they realize that for 300-400 a lan brings them, we can basically rent out a mansion for a weekend and bring our own PCs and play in a much better environment.
I'm just amazed they are still afloat with their "business model".
20 dollars is a crazy amount when you get booted off once you're eliminated. lol.
Are you guys talking about the Netolic place? Or the place that moved in to that area, rather? Word on the street was that it was looking pretty slick.
Rob, Cpeter, and I went there once. There is two downsides to that place. At least when we went.
a) you have to walk down the creepiest fucking alleyway to get there. If you park in front anyways b) there was like 12 Koreans in the staircase and when the three of us white people walked into the stairwell they all were like WHITEYS and all shut up and just stared at us until we went through the next door way. I thought I was gonna get raped or something TT
Being like 5 minutes from the buffet is good news as well.

Rob, why didn't we go there? I know we went there and the place was still really big...I can't remember our reason for not using the place.
Actually I think it was price for the PCs? Back then we still paid the hourly rate for our LANs and prizepools were only donations though..hm.
I've been to all 6 cybergrounds LANs. The first LAN i remember loosing every single game i played. That didn't stop me from using the computer the entire rest of the day. I played LoL and sc2 customs with people in the LAN and still had alot of fun. This time, i got to the ro16, lost 1-2, and my computer was revoked from me ASAP.

We didn't use the place because 1. they wouldn't answer their phone, 2. didn't have a website, 3. TOLD me they were going out of business (when they were really just changing management or something?) 4. was really hard to find the place from the street having to go through some back ally up some stairs to the 2nd floor of some random building following signs for a $5 haircut through some doors...
at that time when we visited them I felt the entire situation was far too unstable to plan lans around, I had no idea if I was going to show up next week and the place would be empty...Things could have changed in the past few years since I've been there though but I always keep assuming the place went out of business lol.
I just wanted to post, I had a great time, sorry to the dude that didn't have a good time(salvex) I have been going to these lans for almost 2 years now and i think at least 12+ lans, my first lan i knew nobody and slowly i started meeting new people and before u know it i know almost 1/2 the people there at times, I am a shy person and the fact that i have come to meet so many people is suprising to me and honestly most of the people just came up and started talking to me, So sorry things didn't work out for ya but ya can't expect everyone to flock to ya. Thx to Luckyfool for being king of the dc lans and torenhire for being king of the tournament hosting. sorry That casting didn't work out for ipp, i was really loooking forward to hearing some of his casting, sorry things didn't work out hopefully it will work out better next time. hey - redditAlcool here it was a fun tournament, i only stayed for the groupstages since I lost to sindread in the tiebreaker for 2nd place. Regardless, my only complaint was I had 3 ZvZ's (i hate ZvZ).
also not gonna lie was creepin' on avilo since I sat next to him and was actually interesting to see that Terran's actually use their keyboard.
Aaaand Sadistx sorry man you were deep in games and I didn't feel like sticking around with the serial killer owner there..
Thanks Luckyfool & Torenhire (whoever else were the staff) for hosting a great LAN! Next time lets just give avilo our 20 dollars when entering through the door.

I will apologize for the failnament comment. In my defense, I tried to use honest critique here instead of nerd raging about why I was disappointed. I do not see any good in just complaining about everything. But truthfully I was pretty pissed when I returned.
I was not local, I found out about this in the DC meetup group which I joined in case anything interesting related to SC2 was held within driving range. Lets go back to the original quote that I made.
DC lan's are epic and awesome, Ipp will be casting the entire event from location with tv monitors setup for observing. Anyone of any skill level can participate in the tournament, we encourage everyone to play or at least come out and spectate and hang out with other TL members and sc2 players!
I drove 4 hours to this tournament. IPP did not cast the ENTIRE event, only a few games out of the total, that is misleading. Yes, you do encourage any skill level to play, but I expected my first few games would be against someone my own league. I was OK with me losing to much higher league players though, but then being kicked off the computer makes that NOT OK. I just paid $20, plus the 4 hour drive in gas, to lose to some higher league players, which was not casted, in a small room with a computer than ran SC on like medium graphics. Yes, I'm a little annoyed at this. Also, I was typing in the channel because I was trying to FIND some of the people I knew in that room from the DC meetup group. I cannot just walk in and go OH HAY THERE IS ISAI! I was also talking with the guys beside me, and that was the most fun I had the entire time. I really enjoyed the conversations I had. Anyone that came in that area I said hello and introduced myself, Im sure if they read this post they can vouche for that. However, I cannot just go around while people are in a game and just start talking to them. I just kinda wish come introducing would happen when you first arrive.
So, in my summary, I would say this IS a really really good thing for locals or pros that have a high chance at winning. But for someone like me, the description is way too misleading and killed my Saturday. I typed the failnament remark when I first got back because I was pissed at the time, but truthfully I wish this tournament the best, just maybe be a little more realistic in the description.
How about we get set up a casual league and a pros tourney, where everyone who is in master and grand master will be entered in the tourney and say the top 5 finishers in the league can enter the tourney as well. The league will have a round robin where everyone plays, say 10-15 games or less.
Everyone still contributes 20$ for the lan expenses and the tourney win money.
Well Ipp only left early because we had scheduling failure and didn't get the event on TL. So it wasn't false advertising as 99% of the time, it's what happens. That wasn't something we knew about or planned around. So don't hold us to that - shit happens and we just gotta roll on.
Also the LAN center controls the PC usage, not us. And if it matters, we are very unhappy with the PC center's time nazi-isms. They never used to be this way, and to be honest they could just reserve that "island" of computers and let us use all the other ones and it'd be fine.
As far as the leagues of people attending - I don't sort groups based on anything but random placings. Sometimes we have the top 200 people sorted out into different groups but I don't know who's bronze or who's masters. So, sorry, but I'll take the criticism positively and see what I can do about leagues next time. I'll also do better about races, but in the past it was like...3 zergs and 2 protoss and everyone else Terran so I just kind of stuck people in groups at random like always. We had a group of all zergs, a group of 3 zergs, and a group of 2 zergs this tourney. lol. Should have spread them out.
the problem with only matching higher league players with other higher league players is that even the good people will get knocked out early in the tournament, which will lead to a pretty terribly lopsided quarterfinals and onward. Unless someone can think of a good solution, I don't think matching lower league players to higher league players until late in the tourney is realistic.
BTW, as much of a genius torenhire is, he can't check up on everyone's profile to pair the matches fairly.
P.S. the august lan center is being built as we speak, so I don't think its the one you have been to previously
@ Torenhire - How crazy a 20$ entry fee is depends completely on perspective but I certainly agree and wouldn't recommend this event to casual players at that buy-in if we have to get up after getting knocked out. As for the brackets, I know different match ups make for more interesting games but I think they pretty much have to be random or you're just going to run into problems although albarn's idea seems worth thinking about, i.e., random groupings for certain levels and winners advance to the upper groups (also randomly assigned). Something along those lines perhaps would help diversify the field.
@ Salvex - I could totally see how driving that far for this event would be disappointing. All lans have technical difficulties and it sucks you didn't get to see all the games casted or keep a PC the whole time. If you had stayed until the end you would have been able to observe some deep stage games in the couch area and chat with players. I don't see how you're upset about playing higher players. Common knowledge dictates that brackets are/should generally be set up randomly. The ad said that players of all levels are welcome, not that they would be out in full force, so I don't see what's misleading about that. Kill your Saturday? You seem like you're still frustrated but I'm glad you did have some fun .
@ organizers - thanks again for doing this. Just an fyi, I have experienced a lot of racism at Korean gaming rooms in Annandale in years past but perhaps things have changed now. My brother has hosted 30 person lans at my house in Manassas many times before... it might very well be possible to hold an event here in the off chance people would be willing to drive here :-).

I mentioned that I did not mind losing quickly to the higher players, I assumed I'd lose quickly anyway. I was only saying it would be nice to have league pairing at the start so lower league players might get a little more game time. Or, some way for lower league players to play games with each other after they've been eliminated.

if you wanted to play more, they allowed you to if you just paid the hourly ($2/hr)
So whats this about people getting kicked off after they get knocked out (i understand if its group play to get people in ) but someone said they got kicked off the computer after round of 16 or something?
@CaucasianAsian - I wish had thought of just paying the rate, I fail at life. Although I'm not sure that keeps the staff from murdering you in the parking lot if they think you're pretty.
I think Lucky does a great job with organizing the DC LAN tournaments so there shouldn't be any criticism on that part. The criticism should be with the new policy that the LAN center invoked back in June. I'm not sure if they will change how they do business but we will definitely relay the dissatisfaction back to the current owner of CG and see if they will change or not.
@Torenhire, I do think that the place is called Netolic...can't really remember though. They are under new management and is currently renovating the place. Redmage and I visited the place and really like what we saw. However, Lucky is right that the place is not very visible from the main road. But, I think it will be a better environment for future tournaments and events given that they have a lot of PCs and there won't be any conflict with occupying PCs for regular customers . I think with the popularity of the DC LAN tournaments, we have out grown Cyber Ground.
@Arkansassy, Yea those are all the same person. I have an identity problem
Something I've been thinking of and wanting to do for some time now is run 2 tournaments,
Bronze-Diamond tournament and a Masters/GM tournament. Of course this introduces a whole bunch of possible things that would have to be sorted out, not only would we require a larger venue but we would need additional volunteers to help run and keep organized of course........also prize pots would be skewed.
ah so much work to do things right....I need to quit playing competitively so I can focus fully on organizing stuff the way I envision. ^^

Ok i'm finally at a computer so I can post up some replays on things ^^
@Salvex, Sorry you had a rough time for your first LAN. But i'm sure you know by now that this previous LAN isn't exactly how they normally go. This was actually my second LAN but I came with 2 other people and we had a blast staying until the very end of the tournament, we payed for more computer time when they cracked down on things because the stream wasn't up or i would have just chilled on the couch. We even went out to dinner with a couple people after the event and that was another great experience to get to know the guys that run this thing a bit more. So simply giving it more time to get to know people, talking with the people around your computer helps I mean you aren't going to really get to know everyone right away. The group of people that came with me are all Plat and below so we knew we weren't going to win but still had a great time improving our skills, I actually took a game off a Master level player which last LAN I couldn't do. So hopefully you'll be more inclined to attend the August LAN now that we know it wont be at the same place so most of the issues involving the computers wont happen again.

@Luckyfool If you were able to get this up and running I would be more than happy to help out with this event maybe even casting and running a stream for the Bronze-Diamond group ^^
@ organizers Thanks for setting this up and running it despite the issues I thought it was another good event. No event is perfect and you guys did a great job running this like always!
@Everyone else, I did bring my camera to the event and walked around and filmed a good amount sadly i didn't really get any interviews with players other than the group of people that came to the LAN with me. I was hoping to get some interviews after the event ended but things wrapped up quite quickly so I'm going to try and grab interviews after group stages next event when people are waiting around and there more time. So as soon as i get the footage edited i'll post a video up and link it here.

lol I was just getting ready to say that his gf came with him. :p
20 dollars in itself is not a lot of money. HOWEVER 20 dollars to lose three BO3s and then get kicked off the computer by Nazihire and creepyLANcenterMussolini is a lot of money.
I've disliked the place more and more the more LANs we've held there, but I've kept it to myself lol.

Maybe if you actually showed up to the LANs again, you'd know about this! :p
Everyone always asks where Bob is and no one knows!
Well this entire post is pretty much directed at you.....
It's a shame you had a bad time, I would tell you I'm sorry but I'm really not. I'm a gold level player and I have gone to the last two held by LuckyFOOL and the minions and I've had an awesome experience..
Granted I'm 0-12 in both trips to the tourney losing doesnt scare me away at all...
If i was so worried about winning or losing I would go out and play WOW....
So boo-hoo at you for gettin ur ass rolled on by a GM and a couple boss class Masters... but what you really should have done is save those replays, email them to yourself and learn from it....
As for the making friends part, well brothaman I have had no trouble conversing with other people... Maybe I'm just more likable than you i dont know....
--------------
So now that I'm done being an assh*le for real you should have stuck around cuz all 3 members of LXG stayed the whole time and talked about the game non-stop.... granted there were very few of us what i learned saturday makes me feel like less of a scrub....
I hope to see you at the next LAN tho and come say what up to me I'll talk to ya all day... Big Dude Trail Blazers fitted, saying outlandish things to random people... Yessir..
And just maybe.... JUST MAYBE if we're in the same bracket I'll steal a win of ya...
Cuz I would be higher than the champion if i walked out of the next LAN w 1-17 record...

Did you read ANY of my posts? You're the typical OH LOOK SOMEONE MADE A NEGATIVE REPLY NOW IM GONNA GET BACK AT HIM. Your post made me facepalm pretty hard, congrats. Do you want to know what I did with the Master's league player that beat me? I played 2v2s with him and conversed a good bit before being booted off my computer. In fact, 2 out of the 3 players that I played against I talked a good bit with. The third player I never saw his face. You completely missed any points I tried to make in any of my posts, and the only reason I bothered replying to your reply is to try and deter any others with your opinion.
I am not going to repeat the same blah blah I've already said. Go back, re-read, and perhaps try and soak in what I typed. Thanks. Also, who in the F-word makes a 4 hour drive, from a MEETUP group online, that does not expect to win, and is not sociable? Do you realize how stupid that really sounds? OBVIOUSLY the main reason I went there WAS to interact with other players, and I did so the best I could without literally tapping random guys on the shoulder while playing at their computer. I really hope this is the last reply I have to respond to.
edit:Torenhire, are you the guy that I talked to when I first arrived about what to do? Sitting in the front of the LAN opposite side of the door?
Yes, I was the guy with the ponytail in the front of the LAN center you checked in with. Also gave you your group when I had it posted.
FWIW we tried something new with the organizing of the LAN, getting everyone in the center early and giving groups as I could fill them up. I don't think it ran terribly but I certainly have a better idea of how to do things.
Problem I see with this way is that the top 200 players or our regular top 4 finishers and the more hardcore players show up first and the rest kinda trickle in...makes spreading out the seeds really hard TT

Yo son, talking to Lucky atm about the idea of splitting up the groups ;3. I say we do it at the IG LAN so that the IG Lans could get more popular! considering how we're doing it at a new lan place supposedly. Son we gotta do ours 4's again btw.

Just so you know, the reason we did brackets at the ItsGosu LAN was ONLY because we had around 20-25 people. I can't make that work. 10 people in the AM groups, and 10 in the evening? lol
I think the IG LANs were just less "popular" because they are new to the LAN scene (for us anyways, dont know about previous) and Rob is a really annoying jerk (sending PMs and emails all over the place) and gets our LANs out there.
People recognize Luckyfool+Torenhire run LANs as established and working. ItsGosu runs a great LAN - the casting set up and everything is just awesome. However they're new. Rob and I had as few as 8 people show up to a LAN once, and we had a few that were like...10-15 people. We're way bigger than that now. Just give ItsGosu some time to establish themselves and they'll be set. They're great guys and the LAN was run great (/ego).
Maybe they should bring Hwangsin to a LAN.
Anyways, Rob and I talked about groups briefly...we just thought this was a good idea to try as we've been trying to get the LANs to finish faster. With everyone showing up in the morning and filling groups in as they show up, ensures that I can get the most amount of people playing the quickest. Eliminated evening group players from showing up and then standing around all day. Plus what ends up happening is people are slackers and don't wake up on time or don't show up cause 11am is too early on a Saturday (wut) and then the morning groups are empty and evening groups are stacked to hell with tons of players.
There's clear benefits to both, we just were trying out new things to see what would work better. We'll keep working on things. Right now we need to find a better LAN center.
shit, Rob, you and I are gonna be hosting a mini-MLG soon if we keep growing.
Guys...I just moved to the DC area and would love to participate in the next LAN event. Do you guys use a meetup page or how does one find out about the dates and announcements other than just keeping an eye on the community forum?

Thanks!
Zlasher's link helps, that's kind of our "community page" so to speak.
People will usually mention LANs in there, however I think we're taking a mini-break from LAN hosting at the moment. We'll be sure and get something put up in the DC thread when we know.
ah, cool. Not sure if I can make dinner on Saturday night or not. You guys start eating dinner at 10pm? Do you play SC before at that Netolic PC cafe also? I might be able to make it out tomorrow night, but would love to grab a few more details.
Well, um...we already...um...have a Peter, and you uh...well, you might just not fit in.
JK :D
We don't normally do the LAN cafe beforehand, this is just a special case because Luckyfool and I need to find a less shitty LAN center to host these tournaments at. We're not planning on playing (I don't think) but just meeting management and sliding the idea by them.
Shoot me a PM with any questions, this LAN went poorly and I'd rather the thread stop haunting me, hahahaha.

Good video! IIRC the Netolic place has a fairly decently lighted area for much better interviews :D
NanMan, it's a shame that you put so much time and effort into a 24:07 video that most of the time is so dark you can't see anything. What does Ipp use when he pans the place that it's always well-lit?
The interview was great and your commentary throughout was good, but LOL @ you worrying about the pronunciation of Sonkie, when you said Avilo incorrectly a jillion times. It was cute. :D
Ummm...you weren't by any chance rooting for Luckyfool, were ya? hahaha
I have to say I really disliked this LAN mainly due to the management and if it is there again, I don't know if I am willing to lug all my equipment out there to cast it alone again. I really liked the one where we had HyperCrew/ItsGosu/and myself. All day is a lot just for 1 person.

Guys you should chill, he is like the only one running the place and after all he is running a business. If you go to CG often you will learn that he is a very nice guy.
Next LAN will be hosted by itsgosu I believe maybe a week before MLG Raleigh? Not sure, this is what I thought was being talked about, itsgosu will confirm.
Another LuckyFool/Torenhire lan won't happen before September.
@Arkansassy haha yea i suck when it comes to pronouncing peoples names T_T and I think Ipp just has a webcam attached to his computer that he uses I was using a HD flip so no lighting for my camera sadly
Maybe one of these times I'll bring all my stuff and cast some of the event ^^

next time i'll cast with you buddy!
I swear, all I'm going to hear is "blah blah brood war blah blah sc2 is worse blah blah brood war" LOL jk.
It's Gosu is looking at hosting a LAN at a new location after MLG Raleigh....probably Sept 3. Since HwangSin will be making an appearance at MLG Raleigh with us, we're trying to figure out his schedules and have him come to the DC LAN to meet the local players and possibly do some showmatches??? What do you guys think?
There are a few reasons I didn't go to the last LAN. First is I've been working 7 days a week for 8 weeks, tired as hell. After that it's all on the LAN center.
Standing up to get food, watch the cast, or watch someone else play and getting locked off my computer is frustrating. It says no smoking inside before 8, and while I understand letting the caster do so (and he even did his smoking off into a back room!), it seemed like there were a lot of people deciding that standing right outside the open door to the building was fine. Then the wind blows it straight inside! After 8 it's pretty awful as expected. Then the inability to play sc2 on medium, or even some computers on low and hold 60, 30, 20 FPS during fights.
I don't think I'll be showing up to Cybergrounds again. Hopefully the itsgosu crew gets another venue because I've had great fun with the actual Starcraft part of the LANs. Even getting casted being stomped by Avilo was cool .

I don't know what MorningMasume's beef with the guy is, he's certainly not a "major asshole" or a "prick" ... I don't really know what all he's talking about - but I don't doubt he's a nice guy. However each LAN the proverbial grip gets tightened more and more and it's lame.
The guy's personality and attitude aside, I can comfortably say that we enjoyed our time at Cybergrounds when Mr Kim was around a lot better.
