LOL! Yeah! I heard about the team last time. Avilo was thrilled to join, cuz he really likes Tits.

Man Salvex, I kinda hate to do this, but you've done something that's really rubbed me the wrong way. You came on Teamliquid with a tone that was as an honest critique. "I didn't really have that much fun-" well, sorry you didn't, it certainly isn't everyone's ideal environment. But then you post "Phucking failnament imo" in the reddit meet-up group and I'm not quite sure I can respect that.
The tournament itself went smoothly. Everyone played their games in a reasonable time (except avilo who plays hour long games) and the organizers kept things going. Everything was standard. I don't know if you were expecting some kind of GSL/MLG production but for a tournament ran by ~3 guys on an internet forum thread, you certainly have to manage your expectations.
As for the social aspect, I know what its like to enter a crowded environment and not know many people. When I first joined the local TL/DC community, it took me a few get-togethers to warm up to everyone, but I didn't go posting hate after my first shy night. The purpose of the meet-up group (reddit thing for any bystanders reading) was so that you could go in knowing some people in advance, but while I find Isai and Tim, you never found any of us. You say that nobody responded well in chat- aside from not seeing much there, I tend to think people would socialize with their mouths when they're within 100feet of someone rather than typing. If you heard more than the sound of keyboards during your entire stay there, that means there were conversations and people to talk to and meet and hang out with. I'm not a social enigma by any means, i'm the shyest guy on the planet, but you really just have to say hello.
I dont know. I just don't think "Phucking failnament imo" is an appropriate response. The tournament was average, but people had fun anyway. It had its hiccups and its imperfections, but I'd like to think most people walked out of there having had fun.
edit: In less aggressive news, grats avilo once again :O

thanks for coming out today everyone, I apologize the event didnt run as smoothly or successfully as my other events. it'll be some time before I'm back to run another lan. a multitude of issues recently have begun building up that will need to be addressed before I can run the kind of lan that I want to run. I will speak of these issues at another time, for now it's been a reallllly long day.

Yeah agreed, don't want to spoil it yet though guys xD. Maybe, there won't be bad reviews this time or any complaints/back stabbing?
We'll see xD. For all the low levels btw, just work hard, man at my first lan (march-april), I was a gold ;3. I didn't win shit and I lost my first match at my first lan to my friend whom I came with ._. (stupid vile.illusion) anyways, now I'm diamond(extremely low masters-ish?) and was able to beat Sadistx 2 lans ago ;D (Sup son.) and accomplished my goal ;3. Who knows... Maybe I can beat Lucky LOL.

btw you should have seen how pissed I was getting during the 3rd place match against illusion, (illusion refused to coin flip for it and instead forced a bo5...) David was watching and rofling the whole series basically.
all the lan fails + having to play more tvt after getting mindfucked by avilo started me off on the wrong track going into the series, by game 4 I was basically losing it, ask david lmfao.

Maybe I just came at a very bad time, but this is misleading. I signed up to play, obviously not expecting to win but just for fun and to give me something to do besides JUST spectate. I mainly came to meet some other Starcraft players that are skilled, and converse a bit while watching games. However this environment is very poor for anything but playing against the assigned players. The room is small, crammed, and completely dark. There little communication going on between players, and there is not a real location for players to just converse and meet one another. Perhaps I just expected too much out of this, I don't know. If I had to give any advice from my experience, I would say do not come unless your local, or high masters or grandmasters league. This is not at all supportive of lower league players. I left for 15mins to grab some food, return to find I'm locked out of the computer I was at, the commentator had left, and the place was completely dead. Also, I was still logged into my account while being locked out of the computer. I had to do some very fast alt+tab spamming to close out of Starcraft. To the guys that were responsible for arranging and carrying out this event, I am sorry for this negative reply, but it seems to be way too inviting for such little return. I do however think it has potential to be way better, so I wish you luck.
Hey everyone, first I want to say congratulations to Avilo for another victory. Great matches were played by everyone.
Now, onto the complaint about Cyber Ground. Yes I do think the new policy is lame and I have been talking to the owner about changing it. The smokey environment is another issue that I don't think will change. So, I have some good news. It's Gosu is currently scouting a new location for future DC LANs and we have found a perfect place. The area is twice/three times as big, newer PCs, have a great area for It's Gosu to host a "mini" parties so that people can socialize and meet new SC2 players, and they have a separate designated area for smokers!!!! We are planning to do a tournament in August at this new location once they are done building out the facility. So, please keep a look-out for us for the August tournament.

@ Nokarot - when they started doing the lans at this place you could pretty much use your computer all day or move to a computer later if yours was needed for the tournament. Also, it was clearly listed in one of the earlier event descriptions that 10$ of the buy-in goes towards having a PC to use throughout the event. As Torenhire mentioned, the cyber cafe is becoming increasingly worse about this and kicking you off later in the day if you're out of the tournament which is a definite deal killer for me.
I had a blast yesterday. I'm an old school SC/BW player going back 15 years ago. I don't really play video games anymore, and haven't really played much SC2, yet I'll play a few games the week before one of these lans so I can go have a little fun reliving my youth and hanging with friends without getting 0-3ed. Luckily I have a friend who still plays so I enjoy tracking his progress as well.
@Salvex - just a quick point. From my experience, I can say without a doubt that your game will improve immensely by actually being able to stand behind top players and watch how they play as opposed to only studying their replays. Both offer different things you can learn.
@Torenhire - 20$ isn't a crazy amount but if it included all day use of a PC I think that would easily make it worth it for more casual players to attend.
@Tethys - Perhaps a treadmill would be a better solution for you than fixing the AC in the place.
Cheers all-

that's weird, why did they change it so they make you get off the computers? This was the first time at a lan there where the guy asked if i was not playing games to get off the computer or what not, and i'm like uhhhhh still playing games...
i thought the 20 covers the entire day or what not @_@ sorta lame they do that now =/

Great news Ozz, aka MiniMax aka...oh hell, I give up, but are you related to MiniMe? lol

Originally the deal I worked out with the lan center was each player pays $20, $10 covers lan center fees for the whole day (a price they have advertised on their website) and $10 goes to the prize pot. This was perfectly fine for 3-4 lans but a couple lans ago one of the co owners of the place came up to me and told me they had a situation that had happened during one of our lans, a bunch of regular customers of cybergrounds showed up during one of our lans (3rd or 4th one that I organized) and there were no pc's for them, they got all pissed and threatened to stop giving regular business to cybergrounds.
So now the lan center has begun reserving pcs PLUS really cracking down on whos on which pc and whos still playing in the tournament or not.
I've tried to circumvent this by telling cybergrounds to post or notify these core customers which saturday to expect extra traffic in the place, we only come once every other month at the most as it is anyway, but cybergrounds seems kind of unwilling to change anything for us they continue to restrict us it seems...
also a couple lans ago one of the coowners of the place came up to me and said:
"you dont have to answer this but do you think $10 per person is fair?"
I had no idea how to even begin to respond to that. but it was really uncomfortable considering I had this price worked out from the very beginning of negotiations before the very first lan at cybergrounds.
also the smoking issues are bad again which was one of the main reasons we ditched out of having lans at seoul pc (pre starcraft 2 days)
Ever since Mr. Kim has left things have seemingly gotten increasingly worse at least from an organizational standpoint on my end.
|
I mean if they want to continue being a shithole for the 10-12 asian gang member regulars who play Shit of Duty on loudspeakers and LOL on other pcs, they can do that. I thought LANs brought them extra advertisement and brought them closer to e-sports scene. If they had continued to be supportive of our lans, we could have expanded and brought in more pros, but now it's just a shit venue that none of the pros will ever come to.
Guess they don't see it that way. I hope they realize that for 300-400 a lan brings them, we can basically rent out a mansion for a weekend and bring our own PCs and play in a much better environment.
I'm just amazed they are still afloat with their "business model".

20 dollars is a crazy amount when you get booted off once you're eliminated. lol.
Are you guys talking about the Netolic place? Or the place that moved in to that area, rather? Word on the street was that it was looking pretty slick.
Rob, Cpeter, and I went there once. There is two downsides to that place. At least when we went.
a) you have to walk down the creepiest fucking alleyway to get there. If you park in front anyways b) there was like 12 Koreans in the staircase and when the three of us white people walked into the stairwell they all were like WHITEYS and all shut up and just stared at us until we went through the next door way. I thought I was gonna get raped or something TT
Being like 5 minutes from the buffet is good news as well.

you done? lololol log off or pay him. Sorry I had to leave early, I was kinda hoping to check out the old Netolic place before we left.
Rob, why didn't we go there? I know we went there and the place was still really big...I can't remember our reason for not using the place.
Actually I think it was price for the PCs? Back then we still paid the hourly rate for our LANs and prizepools were only donations though..hm.
