Pedro,
You are awesome!! Pm me your IM details, and we can talk more with IGX and Brijan?
Also - should be other starsoc located in australia*
|
Darn should have gone to UQ instead of QUT xD.
|
YAAAA I'd definitely be up for this! I'm first year too, since you're doing engineering, are you doing math1051 atm (and if so, what time is your monday lecture?)? I'm not doing engineering, just doing math1051 because i like to party heh
edit: I could help with/do the UQU stuff if we got some numbers together

Thanks shublar! You were the one who motivated me to do this. Ill send the message to you now. I added Brijan on Facebook also and sent IGX a PM. Did I edit my original post right?

I don't know the rules completely but Ill see if its possible to do a UQ/QUT joint society also as I have friends there too.

Help would be appreciated, Ill just wait this week to see how many people show interest. Im doing MATH1050 cause I got a C+ in Maths C (slept through half the classes, learned my lesson now :D) but I just realized that i might get credit for the maths course I did at JCU so Ill try to swap my monday MATH1050 to monday MATH1051 (what time is yours)?

Ah k I know imaginary numbers but not intervals. You just made me remember that I got the certificate in JCU for Mathematical Foundations when I was doing Grade 12. If I do MATH1051 this semester it will shorten my degree by 6 months which sounds pretty tempting haha

Complete an ‘Expression of Interest Form’. This form needs to include: a) The name of the proposed club or society b) Three proposed aims of the proposed club or society c) Include the names, signatures and student numbers of i) 30 students in the case of a St Lucia based club
I've had some friends show interest and they will probs have some friends who might show interest, but to get 30 people, you'll really have to get the message out and ask around.
|
I am down for this. I actually went to market day and saw the games club, too bad they only focused on CoD and SF4 games, and a minority played SC2 on laptops..
My SEA account is Batman 540. I have about 5 SC2 buddies that go to UQ who might also be interested in this.

Talk to REQShuffle, aka Joe Maloney. He goes to UQ, and is one of the best AU players. Also, I go to UQ and play, although I haven't had much time to play recently, I just watch ridiculous amounts. jeeneeus.580

:O nice man, and just as a btw, we only need 70% of members to be enrolled at UQ, so outside mates can come in too.

I'll look for Joe at UQ (does he have facebook or TL.net account so its easier to find him?). You don't have to play SC2 or even have a copy of the game, as long as you are interested in watching matches and expanding the SC2 scene.

I think its possible to hire lecture theater after hours, there is the theater in Hawken Engineering Building which can accommodate 600 students and the Entertainment Center can be hired also. As soon the StarSoc is approved by UQ I'll get some information on the hiring of theaters as we might need to book it a few weeks in advance

I am not going to play SCII yet, (or else I might fail Uni from practicing too much).
But yea, awesome stuff bro, I'm at UQ doing Med in my second year. Hope to see you guys lan it up at UQ, gotta break the firewall though

Hiring theatres is probably going to be a bit too much I think, probably better off just hiring a small teaching room with a projector imo

Haha I share your worry but Im timetabling my week so to not let this negatively affect my studies. Would you still like to be put down as players who have shown interest? Its not required to attend all meetings and we will try to be as flexible as possible as we are all studying as well

Maybe societies might get a special discount or for free if they are feeling generous? Im initially just gonna concentrate on starting StarSoc but its good to start throwing some ideas around.

if there is a good number of ppl that want to do this and are from different universities (in Brisbane ofc) an inter uni tourney should happen lols ^^

You can still join the UQ StarSoc as we only need 70% of our members to be from UQ, if you think there are enough players in Griffith you can start your own StarSoc and we will support you. Officially it will be called UQ StarSoc but it might end up hosting any Queensland unis who wouldn't have enough members to host their own societies

Yeh haha I already talked with the StarSocs located in Sydney (UTS, UNSW and USYD) and we might organize some inter uni tourneys. Tournaments with the local universities sounds good too!

If all of them join we would only need 5 more players and this can go ahead :D. I was thinking of setting up a stall and sell something so we can raise money so we can go to Sydney sometime during holidays or when we decide its best to participate in a tournament/get together with the other StarSocs.

Thanks for showing interest! Ill add you to the list. Its not required to attend everything as we understand how uni life becomes hectic quickly. Could you ask him if I could add his name to the list also? Thanks

Also, if you need any help to set this up, send me a PM here.
Willing to help in anyway to get this off the ground

Aight so I'll be wearing my TL shirt to uni tomorrow and in the future, yell out "ESPORTS" if you see it ;D (it's the old TL shirt with the light blue pony and the bw units) also, do the same when I wear my hwaseung shirt (which will be on thursday this week, we need to advertise :D)

Haha I'll be on the lookout. If you see anyone wearing a Brasil number 10 shirt it's probably me. I want to buy some handsomenerd.com shirts also. I saw a guy in my ELEC1000 laboratory who was wearing a zerg shirt but didn't talk much with him.

Those who said that they could refer some friends could you ask them to joint TL.net and express their interest here?

...so, can anyone recommend any good courses?

Hahahaha Engineering is pretty fun, so far I haven't had to read any books. Business is pretty basic but there is a lot of reading and Medicine is just murder.

Another QuT student expressing interest
I was actually thinking of doing something similar for QuT but hadn't got around to it between getting ready for uni, work and starcraft ^.^ - probably better to just focus on getting one group up and then if theres enough QuT people later on, it could always split into 2 (or 3 with griffith etc)

Awesome now we are halfway with the number of people we need! Yeh its what I was thinking, do something similar as the UNSW, UTS and USYD StarSocs with organizing the tournaments together and have a combined facebook page.

Hey so Pedro/ChaoticBlack, since you started this thread, I won't fill out any things for the society that you haven't done, so would you mind checking this out: http://www.uqu.com.au/filelib/Start_New_Club.pdf and just do some tentative aims or something so I can go ask some mates irl who aren't on TL?

I downloaded the form last night but still need two more aims. The one I already have is "To organize activities which involve weekly/fortnightly LAN sessions and inter-uni/state tournaments". Which other aims due you think we can add? We need at least 3...
EDIT: Maybe we can separate the aim above into two different ones (one for LAN and other for tourneys)?

Watch tournaments and streams.
|
Another aim could be: To foster the growth and interest in the recent phenomenon of competitive video games, known by fans as "e-sports" by organising group watchings of professional tournaments. or something like that
edit: oh yeah and something about demystifying the world of competitive starcraft and allowing anyone to understand and join in on the fun (although this may overlap with my first statement)

Oh that's friggin terrible, it's Michael Yu from your anti PBL last year, didn't know you'd picked up SC2 yet. Incidentally an extra aim can be simply fostering social ties between different courses through the common medium of social and competitive E-Sports.
And then if you still need another aim, aid in something about fostering stronger ties between universities in Australia, through the common medium of social and competitive E-Sports.
And to the other guy, who's your bro in second year? I must find all the med students! Gotta catch em all

Hey guys. this is like the best thing i've read all week.
I'd love to join. Starcraft in brisbane seems nonexistent to me....until now.

So Chaotic, I think we need to meet up at uni next week to write this out so I can get some people's signatures. I've just been talking to people today and there are a lot more starcraft players than I expected. Add +3 from my irl mates and there will be plenty more, I just need to get this sheet and aims to start signing them up!

Is Tuesday alright with you? My Monday is 8am - 6pm so Im a bit busy then. I don't have class till 12 on Tuesday. Should we have everyone meet at a certain time or just leave the sheet somewhere and let them sign it? With the 3 extra we will have 21 people, only 9 more!

Anyways, hope your accepting UQ alumni ^^

edit: will check the uqu info on that so here is what we have to sign: http://www.uqu.com.au/filelib/Start_New_Club.pdf it states there that "30 people for a subsidised club. at least 70% of which must be enrolled at UQ". The form to sign requires first and last names, student no. and a signature, I'll call up UQ on monday and ask them what the deal is with signing up people from different universities. Should be G though.

I would really like to be a part of a Starcraft society, and I will be there at 11 o'clock on tuesday.
I'm a student at UQ, and I'm also staying on campus, so I am nearby almost all the time.

First year PhD student here, interesting in signing up, although I'm not sure what my availability will be like in the long run.
I was also president of a fairly minor club last year, so I have a vague idea of some of the processes. Signing students from other universities is perfectly fine, you just need at least 21 people from UQ (70% of 30) for it to be official. I believe some kind of membership fee also needs to be implemented for it to be legit, but we always just used some trivial amount of cash, like $2 or whatever.
Actually, now I think about it, I believe we found the 30-person rule to be pretty relaxed, in that they'd let you register the club for the year with less than 30 so long as you made quota by the end of semester. Our club had been around for nearly ten years, though, so it's possible some things were easier because we were already established.
Also for hiring rooms, it should be free if you're properly registered, at least for small tute rooms etc.

So far we have 17 people from UQ (maybe 20 if Suc's friends go there) and a total of 28 people who have expressed interest. I have a friend in first year med who doesn't play much due to study but will sign the form so we might have 29. Tute rooms should be fine. Where do you think would be the best place to meet to play SC2? Would we bring our own computer or use the uni's one? Another choice is a LAN house. When the form is accepted by UQ, I'll arrange a meeting so everyone can vote on how the club will run and tell us what times would be the best

I would have envisaged booking out tute rooms to watch the GSL etc on the projector, but not to play. It's generally helpful to bring your own laptop, although the in-built ones are there if needed.
LANs are tricky. It would be really awkward to do that kind of thing at uni. First off I suspect booking a computer-equipped room is more difficult than a normal one. I'm also fairly sure all the UQ systems are running windows 2000 on mac hardware, which - aside from being flat-out retarded - might also be incompatible with sc2.
I do know, though, that SC2 is happy enough if you dump a complete install directory on an external and then copy it to a uni PC to play. Done it at QUT a couple of times.

Assuming we get everything squared away before then, do we want to do something for the GSL final?

I'd be more worried about the fact that they're the stupid mac mice in the first place. Worth a go.
GSL final sounds like a great idea. The trouble with the Schonell theatre and its ilk is not how much it costs, but how much demand there is.

I think for the LANs we could find a LAN House. There is a LAN Party called (GGF -Good Gaming Fun) where they organize LAN. We need to bring our own equipment (like PCs, game) but they provide the internet and cables needed as well as sitting. They try to aim at usually 100 people but there are LANs with 30~. Their site is http://www.ggflan.com/ if you want to check it out. Would the computer rooms be possible to hire on the weekend? Or in the night?

All it said on the UQU site was to contact someone called James (only once you have become a society) and that Schonell could be booked out after 6:30pm on Tues/Wed/some Sundays with a system involving "Grant Credits". It says you can also try and negotiate other venues if none of the ones listed there are suitable: http://www.uqu.com.au/filelib/HOW_TO_SPEND_YOUR_GRANT_CREDITS.pdf

Do you know how to earn the credits (couldn't find anywhere on the site).? $500 credits to hire Schonell theater so I don't know how easy it is to get $500 from UQU

Feel free to chime in here if you know anything, Belisarius, you said that you were president of a small society. (and just a guess, was it chess?)

And UQU proudly throws in over 130 000 dollars to help make these events happen.
I don't know if this means for all the 120~ clubs but if it was we would get ~1000 if it was spread equally among all the clubs

Funfun to this starsoc. We could do 2 days of signing the expression of interest form, that is if we don't get enough on Tuesday.

Actually nothing of the sort lol. One of the Christian groups. Go figure.
The credits are an allocation that UQU gives for use on club-related things, which includes the hire of major venues. It can also go towards stuff like pizza at meetings, which is largely what we used it for.
You get them more or less automatically once you submit the members' list. A normal amount is between $400 and $800 per club per year, from memory, but really big clubs may get even higher allocations. I'm not sure if we'd realistically be looking at hiring Schonell, but I think even a small club should get enough to do it once.
Normal rooms, like tute rooms etc, shouldn't cost money or credits.

Ah k, Im guessing the lecture theater in Hawken Engineering Building would also be a bit expensive to hire?
|
Um... I don't think so. I'm fairly sure Schonell is a special case because it's used commercially as well.
At the very least, I know the tute rooms in Hawken - the reasonably nice ones with the red chairs, straight ahead as you walk in the entrance near the library - should be free to access, and the projector etc in there is absolutely fine for ~30 people. You don't really need anything approaching a lecture theatre unless we get like 100+ show up.

Not a student but I'd definitely be interested in attending a GSL finals viewing if that ever gets organized.

On Tuesday I'll talk with the others to see if they want to watch the GSL finals. If we have ~10 people going ill see how to book a tute room and how to get the projector working.
For UQ students, is the internet fast enough to stream GSL?

Yeah the internet here is blazing fast, like 3rd fastest connection in the country or something

Yeah good meet up guys! After the five remaining of us left, I got 20m and then ran into some mates and got 3 more signatures. Then I walked 10 more metres and almost got out from under the trees and I ran into my friend who was sitting with her friends. I managed to ESPORTS my way into getting 3 signatures off them (I know I failed with the german (I think she was german) girl, but this time was way better :D).
edit: corrected non-capitalised word

Haha smooth Suc now we have 22 signatures. On Friday we hand in the sheet so like you said there won't be enough time to organize the GSL finals screening. What channel did everyone say they would be on?
|
Awesome meeting all you dudes today
Should be fun ^__^
(NEED MORE TERRAN PLAYERS.... FOREVER ALONE T_T)

Chaotic, yes 1:10pm Friday is fine! (though we'll be wagging a lecture but for SC? who wouldn't ). If my friends actually turn up, you should expect at least 5 more signatures heading your way. See you on Friday.
|
At the rate this is going, we might not need to get signatures on Friday :S (we only need 30 to become a subsidised club, assuming that it gets approved and I just do not see it getting rejected)
|
I think we could get it approved easy with under 30 members. I just don't know if the funding we receive is proportional to the amount of members.

Haha I wagged Intro to Software Eng to go to the Tuesday meeting. You don't have to miss out on any lectures. I have to finish an assignment so Im practically staying at UQ all day.

We are having a meeting on Tuesday 15th of March between 11am and 12 pm at (the red oval marks the spot). This is so you can sign the expression of interest form.
For those who can't attend on Tuesday, there will be another meeting on Friday 18th March between 1.10pm and 2pm at the same place.
Hey Pedro, sorry I couldn't attend, I didn't get your fb msg till after the meeting. I'll try to pop down with a few more people on Friday though..

Hey man,
Bumped into maybe you, or maybe someone else this morning carrying around the form to sign on for the society, which i promptly did(i was the guy with the zerg logo shirt, if that was you), Ill also be at the meeting this friday with at least one other mate who will likely want to join. You also reffered me to this thread so checkin it out, most of the ideas sound awesome, and good on you for taking the initiative to form the society!!
anyways, if there is anything i can do to help feel free to PM me on TL about it, and also, are there any plans yet for some kind of GSL finals party yet???
Just curious, if not i can always find out it all on friday.

You might have bumped into Marcus (Suc). Do you do ELEC1000 cause there is a guy who wore a zerg logo shirt there. The club might not be approved in time for the GSL finals but ill check anyway with someone if its possible to rent a tute room for free, but most likely we wont be able to. Yes anyone in Brisbane/Gold Coast can join, we have some people from Griffith already.
Hey Suc, i managed to shorten the URL to http://doiop.com/UQSL

Yeah that was me with the form and btw we're at 28 signatures atm, I can pretty much guarantee that we'll reach 30 before Friday, making a meeting unnecessary unless people just wanna chat. If anyone is reading this right now, I'll be in hawken first year learning centre until 1:45

I think we should just have the meeting to just get the names of any more people who are interested and haven't replied to the threads here or at sc2sea (and it might give us a bigger funding...hopefully).

All you have to do is post that you are interested in this thread and if its possible to attend, sign the form we hand out on the Friday meeting. After the society gets approved we will hold a meeting where we will write down the names of all the members as they pay the entry fee (we need to have a fee due to the UQU rules so we will set it to the minimum of $2).

Haha I know how you feel plus my internet is really crappy so most time I cant even watch streams. I don't know if its possible to hire a tute room for free without having a society so hopefully someone here can help us with that.
Does anyone have any ideas on where we could stream the GSL?

Turns out I'm not going to make the friday meeting either. Looks like you have the admin side of things well and truly under control, but if there's anything missing in the union info sheets that I - with my infinite knowledge of all things UQU (/sarcasm) - might be able to help with, feel free to shoot me a PM on here.

Hey Chaotic/Suc, I may not be able to make it tomorrow as one of my classes was rescheduled, still not 100% sure at this stage though and Im hoping to make it.
Sounds like you already have a tonne of signatures though, do you still absolutely need mine tomorrow? I dont really wanna skip the class but to be honest, if there was any I could skip it would be this one so let me know

If you can't attend that is fine as we should get the 30 signatures from the rest of the people going.
Hey Belisarius do you know if it would be possible to rent a tute room for the GSL finals even without the society finalized?

Won't be able to make friday either (freaking midsemester test ><), but i'll sign a membership form when the first event goes live or something. :D

A midsem in week 3? That's brutal dawg.
Edit: we could probably just watch the finals in the library if it came down to that...

not sure how things have changed since i graduated from UQ last year but what about just hijacking the engineering learning center and watch it on the plasmas there. tut room with a projector would be more idea though.
Me and a couple of mates would be interested if some sort of gathering was organized.

If you graduated from UQ already you can still join! Anyone who lives in Brisbane can also join as one of the aims we wrote was to increase the SC2 scene here in Australia.
For the UQ students, would the first year engineering center be open on saturday so we can watch gsl. If so would it be possible to stream GSL through the plasmas?

Hey so I've decided that I'll just chill/do work from 10-1 at uni instead of going home, so I'll come to the meeting and bring the full sheet. We can just rub out some other people I got to to sign to replace with legitimately interested dudes.

After the meeting, Ill try to call someone and get some info on the hiring of tute rooms and maybe unblocking the gsl streams (if they are blocked)
EDIT: We have to hire the room 48 hours before... I think its too late now? It seems we can hire any room for free but if we charge the attendees a fee we have to pay 50% of the rent. There is also a restriction of 1 booking per week. If we are not a club this is the document with the list of prices: 2010 Hire Charge Schedule

Glad to see someone take the initiative, something I don't have , are all meet-ups going to be on weekends? Just the way my classes fall, I have more free time during the week than on the weekends.

I was talking with Andrew on Facebook and it seems there are a lot of people that wont have time on the weekend. I'm not sure what to do with the first meeting yet. I wanna try to get the most people to attend but you obviously cant please everybody thats why I created the poll. Ill see if anyone has any qualms about having the meeting on Monday night.
|
You should probably put a time so people have a better idea if they can('t) make it. Also, what about the people who voted already, but actually prefer Monday? Is there any way to just make a new poll altogether?
|
I can probably make the meeting this coming weekend no problem, but if its a regular thing on the weekends I'll probably have to miss out on a few.
edit: Monday evening works well too, I have classes until 6pm and none on tuesday
|
I'll rebuild the poll now with approximate times (times depend on availability)

The tricky bit is gonna be finding where to host little tournies (things like watching the GSL I'd expect to be easy as most uni's let you hire lecture halls etc with projectors).
If you don't have any luck with being able to use labs etc maybe its worth speaking to one of the gaming cafes in brisbane and seeing if you can come to some kind of agreement where they let you host tournies without everyone having to pay per the hour.
Shame I havent found anywhere like this in brisbane so far: http://www.kyotolounge.com/ Being able to order a beer while playing = win! =)

The UQ lab computers dont have graphics capable of running SC2, so if you wanted to host a lan event it'd have to be laptops or a net cafe. the bunker is cheap, but smelly. lol.

Just to be safe though, I might quickly review UQ's computer policy that I agreed to, to make sure that playing sc2 on their computers doesn't violate anything and cost me my precious internets.

The computers in the libraries seem like they'd be able to run it at least on low settings, can you run sc2 off a USB?

I play sc2 on my rubbish 13" MacBook (2009 model) perfectly fine, and the iMacs that the uni have superior processors, more RAM, and better graphics, so I don't foresee any problems. Not sure if it's going to be time-efficient/wise to install sc2 on each though, can it be done through the network? (No idea.)
Looking forward to the meetings. Things to think about in the meantime: 1. Administrative roles. Going further than the basic 3, someone mentioned caster, etc. 2. Suitable rooms/ theaters that could be used for gaming/ watching streams. 3. Weekly/fortnightly competitions: KoTH, 2v2, 3v3, faculty vs faculty? 4. When is a good time to have aforementioned comps/ friendly play?

Thanks to everyone who came to the meeting tonight.
After tomorrow's meeting we'll get started on voting for the positions and deciding when and where our first meeting 'proper' will occur. From that point we can begin to organise the playing schedule and plans for special events (e.g. GSL finals gathering) etc.
If you couldn't make it today, come tomorrow! Same time, same place. Also, look for announcements on the facebook group page from Pedro/Marcus. ((:

Just to add to that, I planned for the 'proper' meeting to be today or Tuesday but only half the people could attend to each day. Im going to hold a poll on facebook or here and the day that gets the majority of votes will be the day of the meeting next week, if people can't attend then they will just have to catch up on the information from what we post on the fb group. We will also be holding voting next week so nominate yourselves by then. We will hold another fun tournament this weekend and hopefully it can be bigger.

We took nominations for the positions as well as writing down the names of members so we know how many we have instead of relying on FB group (since some are from NSW). We decided on how many executive positions we should have (so far: President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Events Organizer and a group for all the casters so they organize who will cast when). We also decided to hold a poll so we know the date of the meeting and decided that whoever can't attend then its just bad luck for them. This is to stop all the complications of holding two meetings and not being able to hire a room because of that

Can we sort something out for MLG?
Not too sure of the times (US and all) but watching the last day with all the semis and finals would be boss.
Willing to chip in for a HQ stream if we can guarantee a lecture theatre :D

Ill end up booking it on Monday if the poll continues on saying on Tuesday. Pretty disappointed on how many people voted considering there are almost 130 people in the facebook group

It turns out you don't need to sign up to vote. Yeh I have no idea why they don't participate more and all the discussions we have are usually just the usual 15 people.

It's not on until next week (Tuesday 12).

Once Pedro sorts out the necessary paperwork to book a room, we'll announce it everywhere that our members should see.

To become an official member (and be able to participate in the big tournaments like the QLD vs NSW coming up) there is a $5 annual fee (usually you will get the money back in form of pizza though haha). Just contact Rashaun in the FB group about paying (he is the treasurer)

Is this still alive? I'd like to join if so.

If for some reason you're at Market Day and on TL, haul your butt over to the UQSS stand and go sign up.

I was there, epic Esports glasses were had!

We had a screening at Uni for the finals on the 3rd of March. We'll have more in the future so don't worry if you missed it. Our Facebook group is way more active than this thread so if you want to know about our events faster, join us there.
