GTX 970 is not being detected - need help :(

Hello TL,

So today i received my GTX 970 and ive been trying to get it to work ever since. I removed my old graphics card (GTX 760) and slotted in the 970. I put in the 8 pin PCI port and put my DVI adapter into the back of the PC where the graphics card is slotted. I turned on my computer, only to find that no signal was being picked up. The MSI GTX 970 showed a LED light which told me that power was getting to the graphics card and so it is very confusing as to why it is not working.

I have hooked my adapter into the cpu's in built GPU and it works fine but for whatever reason, the new graphics card will not be detected. I have tried going into the nvidia control panel but it is not there because the graphics card is not being detected by the PC.

I have tried updating my bios and installing the newest drivers for the GTX 900 series from the nvidia site and i still cant get it to work.

I have 2 monitors because i used dual monitors for my previous gfx card.

PC SPECS:

Asus Extreme 4 Z77 Motherboard
Corsair PSU 750w
Intel i5 3540k cpu
GTX 970 - Not working

my 2 monitors are:

iiyama prolite E2210HDS 60hz
Acer GN246HL 144hz

I have also uploaded 2 images to imgur if anyone can manage to see anything unusual or wrong with how it looks. I can try to take clearer pictures if needed but im literally out of ideas.

The adapter at the left side next to the ethernet cable is being used for this current monitor that im typing on to make this thread. (On board GFX) And the one on the far right is the one that is plugged into the graphics card but is not working or being detected.

Any help will be appreciated as i spent a lot of money on this and its very important to me that i can find some kind of solution.

Pull it out of the slot and put it back in. It might simply not have good contact for some reason.

Try the second full-length PCI-E slot your board has. It only has half the "lanes" as the top slot (meaning there's no contacts towards the end of the slot/card), but it should still work.

Check again if everything about the 8-pin PCI-E power is plugged in fully as there's a lot of connectors involved for you with that adapter you have to use and connectors also on the PSU side (something like five plugs?). Pull everything and plug it in again.

First of all thank you for taking your time to help me

And second of all thank you because your help has managed to fix my problem. I am not a computer wizz and so i can sometimes do some of the most obvious mistakes when it comes to computers. I did not realize that all of the pins in the GPU needed to be plugged in. I thought the 6 pin was just for a spare and so i just used the 8 pin. I plugged in the adapter and got both sides of the 8pin and 6pin plugs hooked to the psu and after 6 straight hours of stressing over a possible broken GPU i have now managed to get it working.

Cant express how grateful i am for your advice and help. This community is just awesome

The PCI bus itself delivers 75W of power.

The 6 pin connector you see going to graphics cards also delivers 75W of power iirc. And the 8 pin connector delivers 150W of power.

A lot of modern cards are power hungry beasts, so your card will be drawing up to (pci + 6pin + 8pin), or (75 + 75 + 150), or up to 300W of power. That's why you need both wires, just in case you'd been wondering
