I have lost something like the last 7 of 10 games because of this bug basically the screen freezes - though I can still see cursor moving - and the game continues I can hear sounds and even control units I just can't see anything beyond whatever was on the last frame. I have a laptop with an nvidia card running windows 8.1 with latest drivers and there appears no definable factor that causes the bug. I searched and tried fixes like adjusting settings and it seemed to work for a couple of weeks then it came back and hit me almost every game or two without any changes to my system.
Don't suppose anybody had this problem and found a working fix because as it stands I can never play sc2 again without buying a new non nvidia computer I have had no problems with any other games and yet I seem to get new issues on a regular basis with no rhyme or reason

This happens to me very rarely on occassion, minimize -> maximize fixes it for me but it's not consolation if you lose your army in the meantime.

This problem has plagued me forever now too, it happened to me 4 times last night..

I used to have this issue when running 8.1 on a GTX 770 on Ultra/Extreme settings. There is a thread on bnet where you can post hardware specific information for this exact problem, but it's just one of those things you post to but don't actually hear back from.
I lowered my graphics settings and it helped me. The real trick for me was going back to windows 7 and re-installing everything. Haven't ran into the issue once.
I'll find the thread and come back and post for you.

Ive had this problem too... I usually just alt tab or ctrl alt delete...

I get this problem from playing Dota2, Starcraft 2, Team Fortress 2(happens the most here) and quite a few other games I play. Sadly I wish I had an answer for you but this is actually part of the reason I don't play much SC2 anymore. When it happens to me I get an error message saying my driver crashed and then came back. For me the game will usually minimize itself, and once that happens I can't get it back without force quitting and relaunching, and if it does remaximize then its usually still unplayable.

I had this exact issue. While playing SC2, the screen freezes or goes black while the rest of the game (sounds, switching control groups etc, pauzing/unpauzing) works fine. Only way to fix it in my case was a reboot. It started occurring after I installed the Blizzard launcher, and it was fixed as soon as I uninstalled the launcher.
NB: I'm not saying the Blizzard launcher is broken, it's fine for most people. But my guess is there is an interaction between Blizzard launcher and -say- Windows power management on certain motherboards that causes this behaviour.

I suddenly get this problem too, there are big threads on it on bnet forums but no solution from Blizz. Only happens in SC2. CPU and GPU temperatures are both low.
Seems isolated to nvidia cards, specifically 7xx series.
Screen freezes (image gets stuck on one frame), but you can still hear game audio, you can still hear the sound effects when you select your hotkeys, etc. The screen may unfreeze if you wait long enough, but usually it means you lose the game.
I'm using a GTX 760 with an i7 4770k on Windows 7.

I've got a 770 and an i5 4690k
Maybe reverting to an older driver will solve this issue?

Try playing without external music.

Yeah there exists no fix as far as I can tell so its either buy whole new computer to get one game to work when all others have zero issues or wait until the end of the world for blizzard to fix it I have had this problem on and off with older drivers - there is no pattern as I had no issues for weeks and then randomly despite no changes to any software or hardware it would freeze every match
I have no recourse but to quit sc2 indefinitely

Blizzard just really sucks sometimes. I had to google for 30 minutes because the game wouldn't stop downloading in the background during play. It's so silly.

E fuck me it's actually still not working. screw you blizzard, screw you.

The exact problem started when I had to install the blizzard launcher. Still no solutions?
|
Yes, I am also having the same problem since downloading the launcher and never had any problems before doing so. It is really frustrating!
|
I also have this problem, today freezed like 6 times, ussually freezez when i start the fist SCV. So annoying
|
I dont know how to stop the freeze from happening. But ctrl/alt/del and pressing task manager will continue the game for you. If you pause the game immediately, you can continue playing without problems.

This is a known issue and one of the reasons why I've stopped Laddering. Been playing RoS lately.

As a follow-up:
I contacted Blizzard support about this. Apparently it has to do with Battle.net launcher and machines that have multiple graphics cards (for instance: laptops/desktops with an integrated Intel gpu and a dedicated Nvidia gpu). Sometimes the Battle.net client forces the wrong graphics card to be addressed, causing this behaviour.
The support dude(or lady? They use nicknames, which somehow seems appropriate ) told me to change my settings in Battle.net, and modify the "When I launch a game..." setting to "close Battle.net completely". In my case however, this didn't help :S
In another forum, I found a way to bypass the Battle.net launcher altogether. In your StarcraftII folder, under Support, there is a tool called SC2switcher.exe (so, something like C:\Program Files\StarCraft II\Support\SC2switcher.exe). This fires up SC2 "the old fashioned way", requiring a user/password in SC2 instead of Battle.net. This is what I use now.
Since the freeze problems occur at random moments, I have no "proof" that this fixes the issue. But so far I haven't run into problems.

I tried to do anything posted here and there, the problem goes only with nvidia cards, mine EVGA GTX760, no matter what settings you have, the only solution I found is changing for an AMD card (OEM R9 270X) and problem never comes back i mean, NEVER,
Patch 2.1.4 says "Fixed an issue where the game display could freezewhen using certain video hardware" give a try to the magnificent GTX760 the problem is still there...
