IPS Glow? Not sure if this is normal for current

So I heard IPS monitors glow and bleed, but this seems a tad ridiculous. Here's my new Acer H236hl bid compared to my 4.5 year old samsung TN monitor:

Not sure why the image is upside down, but yea, glows so much I can notice it on the sc2 login screen lol. Is this supposed to be normal? Anything that is black towards the bottom corners look whitish in game.

the glowing is the backlight, its irrelevant of the panel technology. play with your monitor brightness settings first to see if it alleviates it. otherwise if its really bad you can try RMA.

My Samsung to the left is also a 250 cd/m2 monitor, was at max. As you can see it looks pretty damn black.

All TN monitors are susceptible to backlight bleed and all IPS are susceptible to glow. You just got lucky with your Samsung or unlucky with your Acer, depending on your view.

Looks just like my two TN monitors, but one with CCFL and the other LED backlight.

Which one's the bad one for you? It's odd though, this IPS monitor looks no better than my TN. In fact the colors wash out faster as you change viewing angle than my Samsung TN....

And a better picture at night..

Think I should bother getting it replaced? Or not worth it for the current quality of the bleed.

I did some testing and that is probably because you do not have dynamic contrast enabled on the new monitor. It is meant to dim the backlight when showing dark, but in mine it only works on its particular setting, which is unbearably bright otherwise.

Are the brightness levels similar? If you crank up the brightness on anything, it looks like shit because all of these LCD monitors use backlighting.

And that's not IPS glow but bleeding. You can play panel roulette but I wouldn't expect too much with it especially with an Acer. IPS glow occurs when viewing content off-angle and it doesn't look like what you're showing in the photos.

Yep they're at basically the same brightness level. The Samsung (T2333T I think?) is just that black. It's actually really good given how old it is, and its color reproduction + being glossy isn't all that worse than the IPS panel.

I would expect a cheap Acer monitor like that to be of poor quality simply because you get what you pay for.

The IPS glow, that's showing up if you look at the surface at an angle. This means if you move your head around, the part of the surface you're hovering over perpendicularly will be black. Moving away from that middle point, the glow will start to show up and increase the further you go.

I think that's some bleed but might be mostly the normal IPS glow. If you duck and move down and look at it from a 20cm lower position, is the glow at the bottom gone?

IPS might just not really be that good if you want to use it in a dark room. In practice you have to sit away a good distance and make sure it's facing you. There will still be some glow in the corners. You can turn brightness down a lot compared to what you have it running at in bright daylight.

Yea if I lower eye height a bit and move to the left then the glow is gone mostly, but that's rather awkward position to be in haha.

My cheap 1920x1080 Acer TN monitor of 5-6 years (bought for $99) is one of the best monitors I ever had (also happened to maintain a 5 egg rating on newegg with almost 700 reviews last I checked).

Of course there will be some monitors which are good budget choices, and reviews like that could indicate one. A monitor being IPS on the other hand doesn't mean that it is necessarily a good monitor. Most of them simply aren't very good at that price range.

That light strip along the bottom of the Acer is definitely backlight bleed. I've had enough fun dealing with that issue with one of my Dells to be able to tell immediately what it is. That looks way worse than my Dell though. My monitor has it in one corners, yours has it in what looks like both corners and another middle spot along the bottom edge of the monitor.

I don't think the 2333T is TN. I'm fairly sure its C-PVA. That's why its so black. I was very confused when I looked at your image because I don't think I've ever seen a TN that has that little bleed or black depth.

C-PVA's are insane when it comes to black depth but the motion performance is slow as shit so people didn't really like them. A-MVA monitors are a modern alternative...they don't realistically achieve 5000:1 (more like 3000:1) but they're still a large step up compared to IPS and TN if black depth is of concern. They've got decent motion performance too.

Well, motion is not a problem with this monitor I can tell you that for sure. Absolutely no noticeable blur for me on sc2/LoL/bo2/CS, and I'm fairly sensitive to those things.

Underline mine. I think that part is very debatable, because objectively the measured response times of C-PVA are.....really slow. But, this is a good thing. If you're happy with that, you'd be in no way bothered by the much-better motion of AMVA as WomWomWom said. Yeah it sucks that you had to figure out that viewing angles of IPS aren't as important to you as black depth since you're used to *VA, but at least you now know.

You might think yourself to be sensitive to these things but many people over/under-estimate these things. A lot of people buy "gaming" monitors but a lot of them are actually pretty bad at motion performance from a technical point of view. Same with input lag.

Speaking of which, because modern monitor tech is all about compromises, its no surprise you have people who still swear by Sony FW900 CRT monitors. But don't get a FW900, they're basically all at the point of dying and they probably cost an arm and a leg at this point.

This is from a Dell U3014:

This is what you basically expect from near perfect TN and IPS monitors. The backlight bleeding will vary (the backlight bleeding on that Acer seems not good) but it'll always appear somewhat grey unless you turn the brightness to 0.
