To me the prices you list for CPU, motherboard and GPU seem really high. In Germany I get an - Intel 4690K for around 230 Euros, - ASRock Z97 Pro3 Intel Z97 So.1150 Dual for around 85 Euros and the - GTX 750 TI card you mentioned for around 150 Euros.
I've chosen OC-able components because they were only around 30 Euros more expensive. And still even the OC components are in total around 120 Euros less expensive than the Spanish prices you mention.
Have you looked at amazon.es for example? I just checked and they have prices just a little bit above the ones I've seen in Germany.

Yeah, the thing is all those prices are from shops that are located in my city (Valencia). I've gone online to search the same components and I've created a really good, imo, PC for just over 750€ which is fairly cheap compared to the almost 900€ PC made with physically bought parts. The thing is that the shipping is another 50€. Still quite cheaper thought.
Case - NZXT Source 220 - 56€ CPU - Intel Core i5-4690 3.5Ghz - 225€ Motherboard - Asrock H97 Pro4 - 94€ GPU - Asus GeForce Strix GTX 960 DirectCU II OC 2GB GDDR5 - 229€ RAM -G.Skill Ripjaws X DDR3 1600 PC3-12800 8GB 2x4GB CL8 - 73€ Hard drive - WD Caviar Blue 500GB SATA3 - 55€ Power Supply - Nox Urano VX 650W - 44€ Total of 776€
I guess I will have to get the parts online.

Ok, so here's the build I've put together so far. All comments/suggestions are welcome:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/3NfKdC
I still need to pick out a graphics card, RAM, and case, and I am actively looking for suggestions on those.
For the graphics card, I think I want to go with the 970, but I don't know how to make heads or tails of the different variants offered by the various manufacturers.
For RAM, I saw that a 2x4 kit is recommended, but I don't know what refresh rate.
I think for the case I will probably just go with the NZXT Source 220 since the guy above me is getting it :3
I've quoted my original post w/ the questionaire for reference below: + Show Spoiler +On February 13 2015 10:17 Zyufin wrote:Hey guys, looking to put together a build ASAP (can buy whenever). I do want a ~500 gb ssd I think. As I say, the budget is flexible. I do already have a BitFenix Phenom Mini ITX case. But I got it for only $25 dollars, so I don't mind buying a another case if the Mini ITX thing seems not worth it. I don't plan to rebuild any time soon, so if there's a case for spending a little extra I don't mind. Let me know what you think. Thanks! + Show Spoiler +What is your budget?

Hey guys, was hoping to purchase this build soon so I have been looking on pcpartpicker.
pcpartpicker has these 2 builds for a htpc in my price range http://pcpartpicker.com/guide/Xt8TwP/basic-htpc-build http://pcpartpicker.com/guide/fwzKHx/mini-officehtpc
Anything wrong or could be improved on with either of these builds? Or alternate suggestions? I like the look of the silverstone case because it is really basic and plain.
The biggest difference seems to be choosing an intel cpu vs an AMD APU. I know nothing about the AMD option. Thanks.
What is your budget? $350 USD
What is your monitor's native resolution? I tried looking on Samsung’s website but I will be using an existing TV. Model LN40B550K1F. It’s 1080p and 16 : 9, that is all I know. A smaller monitor will be added later as a second monitor for internet use.
What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? No games will be played on this PC
What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? This PC’s intended use is as a HTPC. Its secondary use will be for school work including writing papers, viewing school websites, etc.
Do you intend to overclock? I am comfortable with overclocking Intel CPU’s, I currently use an i2500k @ 4.3Ghz with 0 issues. If this is beneficial for cost performance for a HTPC and keeps me in budget it is very easy to do. My concern would be the cooler unit, I would like to keep the case size down as much as possible.
Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? No
Do you need an operating system? No
Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? Not immediately, using a current TV at first but will likely add a 19” monitor in the future.
If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. I would like the HTPC to be as quiet and small as possible because it is going to be in a common area that is used for entertainment and media viewing.
What country will you be buying your parts in? USA
If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. I have shoprunner and amazon prime, so if those could be used that would be cool to save on shipping costs. Other than that, no.

That's 1080p with no AA?!
Eh, I guess it's one of the games that goes over 3.5 Gb?

Yup joining the club with SOM, Evolve and Dying Light for releases in the last ~5 months that hit ~3.3 - 3.4GB+ of VRAM on 1080p with no AA. Maybe it's a bit less, 970's act really weirdly and heavily use the paging file (even if you have system memory free, VRAM free and are playing the game from an SSD, they'll nuke the paging file on your HDD) even from ~3GB of VRAM usage.
i'l make sure to stock up on popcorn for the next 2 years.

How does this work with SLI? With 2 970s would it the load to VRAM be distributed evenly, effectivley making it only start running into the issues @ 7gb+?

SLI doesn't add up VRAM. you still only have 3.5 Gb to work with
at least not until DX12 (even that's just a rumor which i don't really believe)
and yeah 970s are weird. i guess they were too good to be true. still, that's a lot of VRAM usage, you'd think that 970s would at very least be the go-to cards to murder 1080p with and that 3.5 Gb would be enough to do that

They act weirdly around even 3GB. Fuckery with paging file etc.

The rumors about various API's allowing you to double/triple/quadruple VRAM with multi-GPU are kinda screwed up. They're loosely based on reality but widely exaggerated by people who lack understanding of the technology. It's based on some quite simple logic though:
1; Alternate frame rendering with multi-GPU requires VRAM to be mirrored, each GPU is effectively rendering the scene itself, but one GPU is paced to start rendering when the first GPU is halfway through frame rendering so that they can interleave frames for increased smoothness and good FPS scaling around ~1.8-1.9x, but no improvement to latency that would normally be expected with increasing FPS, perhaps even slight penalties to it.
2; Other rendering methods like split-frame rendering don't necessarily need each card to have ALL of the data in VRAM. However this is already supported in various API's and has been demo'd with Mantle in Civ beyond earth, the best we've really done so far is getting minor improvements to VRAM utilization, miles away from anything like doubling effective VRAM. However there are reasons this hasn't really been done much before, it's harder to support and with two GPU's you'd typically get an FPS increase more in the lines of +50% than +90%. In the days of rating cards by FPS output instead of by actually important things like smoothness and latency, it was very easily discarded as an inferior method when it's not necessarily
|
i'd imagine that it would be a pain to write software so that it can utilize two cards at once or something as well; increased work load on game programmers.
hmm well in the mean time, i'm more interested in single card set ups. just reading around about sli and crossfire makes me uninterested in them. double the cost, yet far from the double the gains. 4K is too expensive (both monitor and the set up to run it) and I think that the most interesting point in gaming today is 1080p to 1440p, in other words the resolutions which will run at 144 hz and 60 hz respectively on a single card.
acer released their new IPS 1440p144 panel, the XB270HU. whereas it's a gorgeous panel and apparently it performs well, not many single GPU set ups are really capable of exploiting such a panel. For reasons mentioned above, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me to go SLI or Crossfire to take advantage of a higher refresh rate monitor. Not worth the hassle and the gains just aren't there.

single gpu 1440p144 would work fine for stuff like osu, sc2, league, WoW etc though as well as desktop usage, you'd just have to really nuke the settings on demanding games if you wanted to get high FPS
I'm currently playing WoW at 4k with 2x MSAA on a single card and still averaging like 160fps while gpu bound with everything maxed aside from shadows which are bugged right now
|
It's the eye-candy titles which should be fun to play in maxed out settings at 1440p144! IPS panel = eye candy. ;p
Though yeah for "competitive" games a single card should do it.
Well, either way the XBZ70HU still costs more than half the cost of my rig, so I won't really be investing in that quite yet. Might be nice to wait for prices to come down and for beefier GPUs to come out. It's a dreamy monitor though, that's for sure.
