Thanks! What is your budget? $350 USD What is your monitor's native resolution? I tried looking on Samsung’s website but I will be using an existing TV. Model LN40B550K1F. It’s 1080p and 16 : 9, that is all I know. A smaller monitor will be added later as a second monitor for internet use. What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? No games will be played on this PC What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? This PC’s intended use is as a HTPC. Its secondary use will be for school work including writing papers, viewing school websites, etc. Do you intend to overclock? I am comfortable with overclocking Intel CPU’s, I currently use an i2500k @ 4.3Ghz with 0 issues. If this is beneficial for cost performance for a HTPC and keeps me in budget it is very easy to do. My concern would be the cooler unit, I would like to keep the case size down as much as possible. Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? No Do you need an operating system? Yes. I will look into getting a school discount on windows. I do have a copy of Windows7 that I am using for my main PC, is it possible to use that copy or will registration fail/report me to bill gates hit squad? Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? Not immediately, using a current TV at first but will likely add a 19” monitor in the future. If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. I would like the HTPC to be as quiet and small as possible because it is going to be in a common area that is used for entertainment and media viewing. What country will you be buying your parts in? USA If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. I have shoprunner and amazon prime, so if those could be used that would be cool to save on shipping costs. Other than that, no. The machine will be windows, I believe windows 7 or 8 is available through the university for $10. I will double check today when I have a chance. I like windows 7, so unless there is some benefit to getting windows 8 for a HTPC I will just use what I am familiar with. I don't think I need very much storage. The media for this machine is going to be 90% streamed. We also have a blu-ray player already for that format. I do have about 100 movies that I could potentially load onto the HDD if there is space, and they are almost all <1gb each. They were obtained when I was in college in 2004-06 and are currently burned onto DVDRW discs, so depending on HDD space that will decide that. This is not a huge concern. I could cut down the ones to load to 30-50 easily, or just leave them on disc. I have never trans-coded video to my knowledge, and while I understand the definition of this term, I do not know in what situation I would use it. Please explain. Thanks.

Also random wireless/mouse keyboard combo could either be alright for you, or just dragging the price up because you might want something better performing. 4GB of RAM isn't really enough; it can't kill consoles when it doesn't have enough RAM to run some of their games properly. I would start with a pentium g3258 + OC (or i3) with a gtx750 (or 260x) and work up from there. Those CPU's are pretty alright because you can buy them used for very low prices and overclock them. They're not amazing however and it really depends how cheaply you can get your hands on one + a good motherboard to OC.

I don't really understand / cant really quantify the difference between the 290 and 290x though 290x is barely faster than 290. It's a far far smaller gap than that between the 7950 and 7970, between the 670 and 680 and tiny by comparison to the performance gap between 970 and 980. It's literally like 2-5% in a range of games, if you test apples to apples with the same clock speeds. The main worry when looking at 290's and 290x's is pricing and the cooler, because the 290x version of a card might have a different cooler from the 290 version that has good or bad VRM cooling etc ^i don't think it can be simplified that way, having owned a 970 and they're close enough to 290/290x to win on one benchmark by 5%, and then lose by 5% because you changed around settings

So context for me: I built a computer in early december, tested it within a week, everything worked, and I filed 5 MIRs. I have received one check, a $15 one for an ASRock board. CoolerMaster and Rosewill haven't followed up on theirs yet, though they.. probably will? Downsides to MIRs:
For this reason, I don't pay attention to MIRs at all when comparison shopping, though I do quickly test all components I get so I can file the MIRs. Edit - changed incorrect acronyms

What is your budget? 1200 USD What is your monitor's native resolution? 1920x1080. Second monitor is 1600x900. What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? SC2. Shadow of Mordor. Dota 2. Planetside 2. What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? Work applications. With all programs running, it's about 10gigs of memory used. They aren't processor-intensive, just RAM-demanding. Minor video editing. I'm not intending to live stream my games, because I use a low bandwidth internet connection. I am intending to capture locally and upload 1080p videos YouTube/Twitch. Do you intend to overclock? I've got zilch experience on that front. I've been following the thread, and it seems like this is recommended for the best bang for your buck. If it furthers my dollar, I'll dive in. Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? No. Do you need an operating system? Yes. Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? I will be replacing a monitor, but not right now. The CDROM drive in current I'm going to re-use. If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. No. What country will you be buying your parts in? US. If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. Newegg/Amazon.
