That's something that they only gave to very few people. I saw threads with a bunch of people trying and like 9 out of 10 getting turned away and pointed to refunds instead (which is good, because amazon is one of the few retailers helping people with that rather than telling them to go to Nvidia, who doesn't take refunds)
seems like more people getting now, that's pretty cool. +1 for Amazon i guess
Do you intend to overclock? Prefer not to till my stuff becomes outdated
The 4790k and one of the rampage motherboards are not something that you'd get without overclocking right away, since you could buy cheaper parts, OC them out of the box and have more performance for less money. Three of the four games you listed have performance challenges at times when they're CPU bound, even on OC'd CPU.
Also with GPU overclocking, if you're gonna drag sliders while running a benchmark or two for 10 minutes, if you're gonna keep the GPU for four years, wouldn't you want it running at 1.15x performance for the whole 4 years instead of just the last year of that? You're never going to have too much GPU performance on a 4k monitor, it's impossible right now since single GPU's can't play new games at high-ultra settings with 2xmsaa at like 80fps and 4k (often not even close) and with dual GPU's, you still benefit from FPS high over the refresh rate of the monitor.

Point taken. If I OC right from the start and get 4 years out the 2 gpu's I'd be more then happy. What size power supply would I need for that set up?

For 4790k + sli970, ~650-750w for 290/290x, ~750-850w
airflow is a huge concern (seen another systems recently pinned at 94c on top card with 100% fan) and VRAM is one too, because you'll already have to turn down some VRAM related settings on 4k for newer games and console ports with 4GB and 3.5GB of VRAM

Hey guys I need some help on picking a power supply. My current one just died when I was playing a game of League. So here's the story.
I built my PC approaching 3 years now. In these 3 years, I had a GPU that died. I also had my first PSU died and today my 2nd PSU died as well. I'm starting to think that it may be because I don't have the proper PSU for my computer system.
What I have is: -Asus M5A97 AMD 970 mobo -AMD Phenom II x 965 CPU -GTX 550Ti -DVDRW -500 GB Seagate Hardrive -8GB RAM -3 cooling fans: 2 x 90mm fans, and 1 x 120 mm fans
all these are powered by my cosair cx430 power supply
before that I had a cooler master elite series 460W PSU
So I know that it's definitely the PSU that failed because my computer just crashed and the PSU shorted. I opened my case and smelled through all the parts and found the PSU to have a burning smell. I normally have my computer on all day, so that might have stressed the PSU. However, this occurred when I was in a game, so when I'm drawing more power from the PSU.I'm not sure what's up and I need some help to identify the problem.
I'll be going to buy a new PSU and I hope to make a smart choice so I don't make the same mistake of having another PSU fail on me due to drawing too much or too little power.

Both power supplies should have a two year warranty so why not just RMA them?
A 400w unit is fine for your type of system but both the CX430 and Coolermaster Elite 460 are low quality units. If you want another power suppyl, get the Rosewill Capstone 450: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182066 which is far superior to both your units.

Asus x99 pro motherboard Intel i7 5820k Duel 970 asus gtx gpu's
Does this set up seem like it would work for my needs or should I be spending extra money to go to 980's? Also I am having trouble finding memory for a reasonable price for this motherboard

DDR4 is new so you aren't going to find any reasonable prices until DDR4 hits the mainstream platform.

DDR4 was released early last year but non-ECC DDR4 and the first consumer platform to use DDR4 (enthusiast LGA2011 X99) was only released six or so months ago. Reasonable pricing won't appear until late 2015 / 2016 when production starts to ramp up for the mainstream LGA 1151 platform.

$500 will NOT happen unless you're buying expensive RAM that's waaaaaaaaaaaaaay the hell off the price/performance curve, like pre-binned+highly clocked stuff. You can get 2x4GB of ddr4-2400 for under $100 and 4x4GB for under $200. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148864&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID= . That's shockingly cheap given launch prices already.
My advice though would be to just get a 4690k and replace it in about 2.5 - 3 years. You could buy a 5820k now but it's a lot of money to pay for extra cores and hyperthreading (which won't make any of those games run faster) and in 2.5 years, that 5820k would be two major generations out of date as well (skylake, coming in ~6 months, then next arch update 2 years afterwards)
actually you could buy either, but whatever you do, a replacement in ~2.5 - 3 years will probably be attractive. It's not a great time to buy Haswell, given that it's been out for ~21 months already. If you're trying to buy for more than a 2 gen upgrade cycle (even though that's not really ideal) then it's best to do it on release of new tech, so start of june 2013 or august 2015 (unless you're buying and overclocking the enthusiast grade parts)

Can you explain this more, Cyro? And what parts would those be if you don't get the 4790K?

4690k + OC and a cheaper motherboard
spending £160 on CPU + £100 on mobo + £30 on cooler and running 4 cores at 4.6ghz is better for most games than spending £250 on CPU, £170 on mobo, £50 on cooler (1.62x price) just to run at stock speed with HT
paying through the nose for hyperthreading because you "need the performance" yet not OCing is the bad thing, because generally OC is a much better way to gain performance than hyperthreading. If you're open to OCing, i would say stock i5, OC i5, OC i7 depending on budget and build needs - not much reason to get stock i7

Hyper-threading is good when you need to encode video or, I guess, compile heavy programs.
There are a couple of games which take advantage of hyper-threading but those can be counted with the fingers of one hand and either way, overclocking 4 cores would net you more performance than 4 cores with hyper-threading at stock clocks.
4 overclocked cores is more or less the sweet spot in terms of price performance, I'd say. That being the i5 4690k. You want a motherboard with 6 or 8 true phases, ideally.
Some oc.net research shows that there are two motherboards with 8 true phase which are quite well priced:
http://cdn.overclock.net/0/07/071b2d45_1.png
Gigabyte
ASUS
Otherwise I'm pretty sure that 4 phase motherboards work out quite nicely as well, if the Haswell overclocking thread is anything to go by. Not sure which ones need to be avoided though.

For my interests, I want to play mostly competitive games: dota 2, cs:go, legacy of the void when it comes out...maybe wow.
I also want to be able to stream, I plan to do some hobbyist toying with video/sound, and I will probably program on it some.
My suspicion is that the i5 4690k will do everything I want. I can afford an i7, but I don't want to waste money on power I won't even notice.

it's not even just that you wouldn't notice it, it's just that it literally does nothing a lot of the time

What is your budget?
<$750
What is your monitor's native resolution?
Want to use my 1080p TV (42'') I believe that's 1900x1200
What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
I don't play games. I may want to start? The only thing I want to play is the starcraft campaign (single player), ideally at reasonable settings.
What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Home media center (netflix, movies etc).
Do you intend to overclock?
No
Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
Considering I don't know what that is, probably not.
Do you need an operating system?
My girlfriend will probably lose it if I get Linux on another computer, so yes - I need the windows!
Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
Mouse but don't consider it as part of the budjet.
If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
I'm lazy so ideally someone can help me find a prebuilt on amazon.ca or ncix etc.
What country will you be buying your parts in?
Canada
If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.

Hi guys, I've decided to post here since I will buy a new PC by the end of next month and I need some advice. Firstly, I would like to state that I've used laptops my whole life. I know that it's not that big of a deal but still, I'm putting it out here. I've begun uni this year so I've decided to upgrade. I have a moderate idea of a PC, it's parts and how to build it, the thing is that I'm not sure what to get.
I've decided that I will need the PC for gaming (would like to play all up and coming games on moderately high quality, especially stuff like SC2, LoL, DotA 2 , Smite, CS:GO and whatnot. I will also need it for some editing and even maybe some streaming in a decent quality.
My budget is around 850-900€, and I've already selected some parts that in my opinion are good enough for my needs, haven't bought anything yet. You guys can, of course, correct me if I have messed up or something.
So for a CPU, I've decided to go with the intel core i5 4690 3.50ghz 1150 box which in my opinion is more than enough. As I said, I have a moderate idea of how a PC works and everything but I've decided against overclocking just because I don't see it as a necesity. So, the lowest price I could find here in Spain is 283€.
Up next is the motherboard. I've decided to get the asrock h97 pro4 1150 4ddr3 hdmi usb 3.0 atx which is around 108€.
Moving up to the graphics card, I couldn't find a GTX760 in my city, but I did find a place where I could get an asus vga nvidia gtx750ti oc 2gd5 2gb ddr5 for about 209€. So for now I think I'm gonna go with that, still up in the air though.
I already got a monitor, it's the asus 18.5 vs197de led 1366x768. Also have an operating system, a mouse and a keyboard so I won't be paying for them.
Until this point, all the components above cost around 600€. And I'm left with around 300€ for the cooling system, the power supply, the case, the hard drive and RAM.
I can't help but feel fucked, I mean 300€ for all of the above seems such a low budget... So I went to a certain PC components shop that is owned by my uncle the other day and they said that they could give me an atx enermax ostrog case, seagate 1 tb 7200 sata iii 64mb as a hard drive and kingston ddriii 8gb pc1600 cl11. dimm RAM and all of that for just 180€. Leaving me with around 120€. for the heatsink and power supply. And I'm kinda confused and don't really know what to do. Any recommendation would be amazing.

Stock CPU has a free heatsink with it. You can get an alright case for about 60 euros i think (the nzxt source 210 is one that's good in the US market, but i don't know if it's available in europe)
PSU for ~35-65 euros
RAM doesn't cost that much, you only need 2x4GB.
For HDD, you can get a HDD/SSD that works for about 65 euros i think. It's a bit hard to guess because the GBP to euro went crazy recently and some prices changed and i'm not entirely up to date
The 760 has kinda been replaced with the 960, but your screen is only ~half of 1080p resolution. Have you considered getting a new one? If not, then a 960 would be pretty extreme overkill for those games on that resolution.

Yeah, I was thinking about replacing the screen as well now that I'm at it. So you think a 960 would be a good choice if I replace it?
And yeah, I just found the case you were talking about for 48€. Thanks a lot for the recommendation mate.

Yea, 960 (or r9 280) is pretty good for 1080p. Not super great but they're the kinda cheap + effective cards
