Between $600-800 for the desktop alone (want to run my games very smoothly with high FPS) What is your monitor's native resolution? 1080p, 144hz What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? Dota 2, LoL, H1Z1, SC2, What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? Gaming and school Do you intend to overclock? Not sure, would you recommend it? Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? Not sure what this means Do you need an operating system? Yes Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? No If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. No What country will you be buying your parts in? USA If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. None

970 / 290 are ~1.7x more powerful as i said the 290 is cheaper but uses a lot more power (like 1.6x - 1.8x) at comparable overclocks, which translates into heat (needing better cooling) and needing a higher capacity PSU (430-450w is fine for haswell + 970, but 550 is better for 290 - with either a 970 or 290, it's better to get a higher quality PSU than the one listed

I've been looking at this laptop for a while and I'm tempted to buy it now that it's $100 cheaper than before. I've been looking for a workhorse laptop with i7 & SSD to run Revit/Photoshop/CAD programs/Premiere/etc and it seems to fit the budget / intents pretty well but are there others that could match the price value with this one? Any reviews from people who have used/seen this laptop before?

I'm looking at 3 PCs for the house right now, one for the room (will just be for streaming / watching stuff, maybe super basic games), one for the living room and one for the study. For the room - looking for something super compact as size is the primary consideration. Just need to be able to watch videos at 1080p (will be connected to a TV of that resolution) For the living room - this one will also be mainly for watching things as well, but will have some gaming involved. This will be hooked up to a 4k TV. For the study, it'll be the main PC and where I do the majority of my gaming. It'll be hooked up to 2 monitors generally, but will also have a 4k TV nearby that I may consider using every now and then. I have some experiences with builds so I think I know what I want for the majority of the parts, but the main questions are: 1. For the room, is it difficult to build mini-atx and finding parts that will fit in a small shell? Should I just buy pre-built for this? 2. For 4k, what kind of graphics do I need to be able to support playing games at a decent setting? I assume CPU wouldn't be a huge threshold. After this maybe I'll have a better idea of the builds and I can post it for critque!

for 4k you kinda need a single high end GPU minimum (so 290 or 970) but you can make good use of two, assuming you're playing recent games. Stuff like Starcraft 2 and League of Legends can get by with less. What model of TV is it? Most TV's have higher input lag than PC monitors

2 - It's going to be a 4k x900c, but as it hasn't been released yet, I don't know the exact specs. I expect it'll be about 40 ms like the other 2014 x series that was released. I am probably planning on doing SLI, but not sure if I need it for both... Downstairs will more likely be primarily TV watching so I think I should be ok if the 970 is push out the pixels without processing. The upstairs I am thinking SLI 970? Or a single 980 with a view to SLI in the future

I have never built one from scratch but have upgraded a few different ones. I am ready for some more detailed plans now and would love a base set up so I can compare and double check upgrading costs/benefits before the actual ordering. I would like a good motherboard and power source to last for years. What is your budget? $1000-$1200 CAD What is your monitor's native resolution? Buying new monitors at 1080p 60Hz unless I get talked into 4k or 120Hz What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? New games on high (not necessarily ultra) settings. What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? Browsing the internet... a little basic video editing Do you intend to overclock? Maybe turn up the processor a bit without upping the voltage. I have never overclocked before so not really but am open to advice. It looks like most people aren't using the stock heat sink with quad i5s(which i assume is what I want) so if I'm investing in another heat sink seems like no reason not to turn it up a bit? If that makes sense. Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? No so I think i'm looking at buying a 4Gb card now to last? Using it mostly for gaming I expect a lot of the budget to go here. Do you need an operating system? Was planning on downloading cracked Win 7 again but I'm not sure about new driver updates causing problems or something. Maybe make the jump to Win 8.1 / ask friends if they can get free through school. Looking for advice here too. Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? Will be buying 2 24" 1080p 60Hz IPS monitors hopefully $200ish each? Looking for recommendations. Not included in budget. Also open to keyboard recommendations but I'm pretty keen on filco and will probably be using my old keyboard for a while after buying the comp. If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. Was originally pretty excited for DDR4 but I can't really justify the massive price break in motherboard and RAM. Could always get 2x4Gb now and add 2x 4Gb later. Buying to last I don't know enough to say that the mother board will actually keep up longer if i get DDR4 because maybe the CPU socket is what will become outdated first kinda thing. I don't need much secondary storage because i already have a big USB3 external but maybe 512Gb would be nice. I am pretty set on getting a 250Gb SSD but open to advice and considering 512Gb but it doesn't stack up nicely against my budget. Case must be sexy. What country will you be buying your parts in? Canada I appreciate any answers to all the questions I have scattered through my "requirements" as well as any advice you guys can offer. I have done so much research but still don't feel closer to making a concrete decision so I thought this could help. I will definitely be posting my build here either way before I order as I have seen countless examples where you guys have provided last min improvements/money saving suggestions. I did a bunch more research and put something together but I don't feel confident in my choices and would like to bring the price down a bit more: build CPU - Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor - $258.32 This seems really expensive but I want to try my hand at a little overclocking and there is not many other i5 K options as I understand it. The 4670K is like the same price? CPU Cooler - Rosewill RCX-Z90-CP 62.5 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler - $25.48 I have no idea if this is any good, sleeve bearings need more lubricant maintenance? Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI ATX LGA1150 Motherboard - $119.99 No idea if this is any good Memory - G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2133 Memory - $88.98 Seems popular, 2133 is a good compromise? Primary Storage - Crucial M550 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive - $169.99 Again went with the popular choice here. Secondary Storage - Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive - $61.98 I would be willing to go to 512GB but there didn't seem to be a significant price difference. I believe I want the 7200/64MB Video Card - XFX Radeon R9 290 4GB Double Dissipation Video Card - $299.99 I'd like to get a 4GB card but im not sure how good this ones other attributes stack up to similar $~300 ones. Case - Corsair SPEC-03 Orange ATX Mid Tower Case - $79.98 I like this one but for $50 I could go with a slightly less cosmetic one Power Supply - Gigabyte GreenMax Plus 550W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply - $126.05 Is that enough? Good 550W one? Optical Drive - Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer - $18.68 I'm not sure I actually need this. but its very inexpensive. That said, what kind of graphic set up would I need to play current gen games on high @ 4k? (e.g. Dragon Age, Far Cry 4, etc) Not sure if that's representative of system demand but those are just some games I've played recently.

Wow, is that GPU really 300W? NVIDIA GTX 980 is almost twice less but it's expensive too. 970's use about 210-220w at 1.25v in very demanding loads, while 980's hit 250 or so. Most stuff doesn't pin them that high on power, but in my experience Planetside 2 and the Unreal Engine 4 demo's did it. Other games were maybe 10% lower. 290's, overclocked aggressively also, hit around 350 i believe. gm204 is only like ~60% more efficient than gk110, but 290 was less efficient than that (so it's maybe 1.8x? i dunno) Would you be able to make me a build that includes a 290? Just use a capstone 550w psu, i was going to add tri-x 290 and a good case but it's hard to juggle prices effectively T.T
