Got my RAM in yesterday. So much better.
You don't have to "install" it anywhere, but you might need a 3.5" to 2.5" bracket if you want to put it secured in one of the driver bays, and the case doesn't have a 2.5" bay or anywhere to put it otherwise (without leaving it hanging, or duct-taped/velcro'd/tied onto something)
Yes, but you should remove everything but the SSD while installing windows 8, that should be the only ssd/hdd in the system - afterwards you can plug in the HDD, set your boot order to ssd first, delete windows on the HDD if you want to etc

Hello all,
I'm back again, this time as a present for my significant other. She's a 'casual' gamer, mostly only plays WoW, Skyrim and Diablo 3 and occasionally streams on twitch using obs.
What is your budget? $500-700 (800 max with tax/shipping if it makes sense to upgrade a bit more)
What is your monitor's native resolution? 1080p
What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings? World of Warcraft Skyrim (all dlc, limited mods) Diablo 3 As high of settings as possible.
What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming? Occasional streaming on twitch with OBS.
Do you intend to overclock? Overclocking may be done in a limited capacity, not to enthusiast levels. OC is not a priority for her PC.
Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire? No
Do you need an operating system? No, we have Win 7 Ultimate
Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget? No
If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify. Intel chipset but not adverse to AMD if price/quality makes sense. Prefer mid or full size towers, I don't like to cram everything on builds and prefer to have more space than less. A white case would be a bonus but not required.
What country will you be buying your parts in? Arizona, USA
If you have any retailer preferences, please specify. Generally used NCIX and Newegg for prior builds but if site is respectable, no issues going elsewhere.
Bonus:
I posted a similiar inquiry on another site and these are the two suggested builds I got there, any thoughts on these?

Thanks again to everyone, last time I had dota 2 beta keys to give out for help, unfortunately I don't have similar goodies this time.

Haha yeah I'll probably have to grab a bracket then to "install" it in to my case since it doesn't appear mine has an 2.5" bay so I don't just leave it hanging in there. Think a buddy has a spare so no worries. Thanks!

first one (4460 build) looks ok, but two main problems:
1; Nvidia GPU's get ~50% higher FPS in WoW due to superior driver performance, and that probably won't be fixed on red side any time soon. Since that's a huge incentive to use Nvidia and there's no such incentive for a Radeon card, you should replace it with some nvidia GPU.
2; 750w PSU for system that will draw like 250w with everything loaded isn't good.
|
Yeah, I actually commented in the other thread that I read an article about AMD cards getting slayed in the new WoW expac, which already turned me to Nvidia for this build. Glad to see other's confirm the findings.
Both users submitted the same PSU, is it because of the price point? I knew 750w is WAY too much for this system and was curious why they both suggested literally, the exact same PSU.
So you think the 4460 is adequate enough and not worth the extra money for the 4690?
If that first build is the 'better' of the two suggested thus far, I'll pull the trigger on it, with a GPU swap to an Nvidia (maybe a 760 windforce?) and perhaps a lower watt PSU.
Thanks!

What about that PSU instead or should I go even smaller/cheaper?

They probably suggested because of price; if you can't get something significantly cheaper and don't mind rebate at all, then it's still a good option. It's worth going to 4690 IMO (~15% performance increase) but it does cost

Hey guys! What do you think of these LGA 1155 ivy bridge mobos?
ASRock Z75 Pro3 which would cost 100 + 15 shipping and handling
GIGABYTE GA-Z77-DS3H cost 130 + 10
ASUS z77-A cost 130 + ???
Gigabyte GA-z77-HD4 cost 107 + ???
I will overclock until I reach 24 hour stable. Might need 2nd pcie3 x16 for CrossFire in 2-3 years. 2 cpu fans + 4 case fans is ideal but whatever.
I am open to suggestions from this Canadian pcpartpicker list: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/parts/motherboard/#s=14&sort=a7

Those are pretty much the weakest z77 boards (aside from maybe the z77-a; i don't know how good that one is) - what kind of overclock are you going to attempt? I mean like, how high vcore and with what cooling?

Ok, I've taken a bit from build #1 and a bit from build #2 to create this list:

Should I pull the trigger? Any further suggestions?

1; Not sure how good the PSU is
2; You need z97 or h97 to be compatible with the refresh haswell CPU's out of the box, if you're not getting either of those then you need to get a 4670 instead (clocked 100mhz lower)
Btw, rumor is for ~gtx960 to be released in a month at ~$250 which would directly replace the 760 (which will be nearly 3 years old tech by then) - so higher performance per dollar, ~1.5x - 2x more performance per watt (lower if you OC it; 760 doesn't have oc headroom) - we already have Maxwell in the 750ti and 970, but nothing between them yet so it's a pretty huge price leap. If you're trying to make before christmas, i guess some rumor of a january launch doesn't matter that much to you though

Hrm, I can't really wait a month as her birthday is 12/18, celebrating on 12/20. Maybe I can cannibalize her old gfx card until the 960 is released and upgrade to that when it's time. I'm not aware of that PSU specifically either but on pcpartpicker it had 44, 5 star reviews (for what that's worth).

updated with z97 mobo, how is that looking?
edit; updated mobo again.

There's just not much point taking the shittiest z97 (overclocking) board instead of a h97, or something like non-refresh i5 and matx h81 if you're trying to cut a lot of money and don't care about the stuff lost for it

A 760 for $200 is a really poor pick, even with AMD's poor drivers the performance compared to a similar priced 280x might be marginally better for wow, but gets utterly destroyed in every other game (20-30%) differences in performance and a bleak future outlook due to only 2 gigs of vram
You should be able to find a 760 for 160-170 if you look around but if you cant there's is absolutely no reason to get one

hrm, ok. I'm about to leave work, so I'll continue the search when I get home. Thanks all.

What's a good wifi PCI-e network adapter? I play wow and sc2, would there be a difference over wifi? I have an ac router currently.

How good your wi-fi connections depends on a number of factors, including the power of your access point, how far your computer is from it, what barriers are in the way, and how much electromagnetic interference there is. If you are in a crowded apartment complex, it's almost certain that there will be other wi-fi APs. If you're on a 2.4 gHz band you won't get a good connection. If you're on a 5 gHz band it's fairly likely you'll find a noise-free channel. However, there are so many things that can go wrong with wi-fi that I recommend you stick with your wired connection. Chances are good you would notice a difference in a fast game like Sc2 over wi-fi.

Hi im building my first computer. Today I went to a local computer shop and I was offered this setup for $600
Processor (CPU): core i5320GHZ Motherboard: Gigabyte B85M Memory (RAM): 8gb corsair Primary Storage: 1 Tera SATA Power supply: ATX Y250w Vcard: MSI 610 2GB
I want to be able to play starcraft on high settings and I would also like to be able to stream. Would this setup be good enough? Or what should I change/add to this. Thank you for your help guys.

Off the bat I immediately notice that the GPU, an GT 610, is massively underpowered compared to your CPU. Ifi your CPU is an i5 4590 (clock speed: 3.3gHz) you'd be spending about 4x as much on it as you would be on the GPU, which comes in at about $50.
For $600 I'd recommend going with an FX 6300 6-core AMD processor and using the savings to get a better GPU, like a GTX 660 instead of a GT 610. If an i3 4150 is capable of handling streaming (it's only dual core, so less sure) you should go with that instead, since it will give you better performance on games since it's intel.
Getting an i5 on a $600 computer seems ridiculous though.

Hey thanks for the reply. I wanted to get an i5 for future upgrades. I can spend a little bit more so I guess I should go look at what other GPUs they sell and get a better one.

It depends on what your goals are. IMO you're probably best off just ordering parts and assembling them yourself, which will let you customize as much as you want. The actual assembly process is pretty dang easy-- like assembling ikea furniture or legos.
