Disable the iGPU if you're not using it and then your CPU idle power will be like 5 watts - it should be barely above ambient even on a shitty cooler
ok at desktop its about 37-42. But I just played a game of CS:GO and realtemp had a max of 95-97 on all my cores O_O that hardly seems right.

That means you mounted your heatsink incorrectly.

As I suspected. I really don't know HOW i mounted it wrong, but thats fine. I just wont do anything too intense until my aftermarket heatsink arrives next week.

A common issue is too much paste, but stock ones usually come pre-applied so that shouldn't be an issue.
Your heatsink fan is spinning, right?

I want to game on my main monitor and use my second to browse or watch streams or w.e while gaming. However, not every game has a "windowed fullscreen" mode so if I'm playing a game on my main monitor that is fullscreen and click on my secondary monitor it minimizes my game. Now I know there is no way in windows 7 to force stop it from minimizing but does anyone know any software that won't mess up my monitors that I could use to keep my games from minimizing on my monitor? You can often use ShiftWindow to force a windowed mode into basically bordered windowless dimensions/screen position. Some games don't play nice with it, but I've had reasonably good success with it.

Yeah. I mean thats why its a little puzzling. Intel heatsinks are literally push down and done.

Might not be clicked on correctly
If you have any thermal paste (if you don't have any now, you have some coming with heatsink?) then you can just remount it in 2 minutes and see if it works. Make sure that all of the corners are clicked in. Also, you can check vcore used with hwinfo (www.hwinfo.com, download and open the sensors tab, look for vcore, core VID if that's not there) to make sure it's not some obscene value (pretty sad, but occasionally this is messed up by mobo and they use like 1.4v at stock which doubles power/heat)

Hey guys I need some help on something. So recently I got a second monitor and hooked it up and as a result I've been watching streams while also playing games. I've noticed with like 10 tabs open in chrome + a stream on source + running a game such as Endless Legend is maxing out my 8GB of ram which sometimes leads to a short stutter in my game when things get really intense. For my ram I currently have two 4GB 1600DDR3 ram dual channeled installed. I have an older 4GB 1600DDR3 Corsair Vengeance stick from my old computer I haven't used in a half year or so. Will it be worthwhile to install the corsair 4GB 1600DDR3 ram or will that be counter effective since my other two sticks are matching and dual channeled ?? I'm broke atm after purchasing my monitor so I can't afford to get another two matching pair of ram lol
edit: Tried installing it and comp wouldn't boot up so the ram mustve gone bad. Took it out spun once turned off again but then started up haven't had a problem since taking it out. I guess I'll wait til I can grab another 2 4GB ddr3 1600mhz since that is the max each of my four slots on my mobo can do.

Yeah that would have been my first instinct if I had any. I will be getting some with the heatsink.
How long does hwinfo take to open? It seems like its hanging on startup.
edit: yep... stops responding at "Checking Intel Management Engine"

Like 0.2 seconds for me
check what cpu-z says
|
err... CPU-Z doesn't load either unless I change the config file so that "Sensor" is off =/

Err.. did you install your motherboard/chipset drivers? There's a CD with the motherboard that has that stuff and it's also on the motherboard website. Not sure if that's related but it's weird if you can't load sensors
|
Yeah, everything was installed and updated. I even reinstalled the intel management engine. Very weird.
So I finally laid my computer down and fiddled with the heatsink. I didn't feel or hear anything change, but my temps are pretty reasonable now. CS:GO had a max temp of about 70. Maybe it was just barely off and needed a firm push? Dunno. Kind of embarassing.
Still doesn't solve my new problem of the sensor/intel management system =P
But yeah, if I run CPU-Z with the sensor turned off core voltage is at 0.842 V.

^should be something like 1.0v when loaded and using turbo

Brettatron , device manager doesnt show any of those yellow triangle exclamation marks?

CPU-Z is showing 1.04v
And no, everything is fine in device manager

Posting this here before i forget, another popular game that suffers a lot from radeon directx driver performance
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/4hS0KLL.png)
And yes it matters, because overclocked Haswell still see's 30fps in unusually intense situations, but 60fps with some regularity, while on the best performing setups, so if that's with a 50% FPS advantage, it's not good for those with radeon cards
looks like they might be improving things a bit with the "omega" driver (they're also immediately copying DSR, which must be flattering for nvidia) but i have not really looked into it yet
edit: Also, they lifted some eyefinity requirements/limitations and you can now run 24 screens if you have quadfire with 6 display outputs on every GPU

Yeah AMD has been behind Nvidia for more than a bit now, even before the release of bigger maxwell cards. The last good thing they released had to have been the R9 290 but then the subsequent driver support was sub-par. It's unfortunate though maybe AMD is stretching its resources a bit, i don't know. I think most of the money that these companies make comes from the professional sector with things like Firepro and server chips. So maybe that's why the consumer end of the spectrum isn't quite up to scratch.
I still think that AMD will get things done eventually, though even if they do these kinds of delays are really hurting them in the long run I guess. I was hoping that the new CEO they got (Lisa Su) would have improved things but eh, guess that she needs a bit more time to get things going.
The rumors thread about the 380X stuff looks promising enough I guess. Zen comes out early 2016? Maybe AMD will stage their come back then. :p

I have a bit of a question about upgrading: I play some games, but mostly not incredibly graphically intense (SC2, CSGO, the odd KSP, maybe some Dragon Age Origins or 2). I'm also an undergraduate Physics & Astronomy Student, so I do a fair amount of programming that is pretty hard on my hardware as of now.
What I have right now is an i3 2120, an HD 6870, an SSD, a 1 TB HDD, and 4 gigs of RAM. So I'm wondering, is it worth it for scientific computing to upgrade to an i5 4690K? Also, I write in C, Fortran, and MATLAB. Does the graphics card help at all with scientific computing in these languages? Ideally I'd spend less than about $400 in total.

Drivers for ATI/Radeon cards have always been iffy on the consumer side. I've been a Radeon guy forever, and the biggest headaches I have are always related to Catalyst and drivers.

What is your current build? Intel i5 (I actually don't remember how much GHz and can't check it witout GPU Oo) MB P7H55-ML X 8GB ram PSU Modecom 580W
What is your monitor's native resolution? 1280 x 720 (considering upgrade to monitor with full HD)
Why do you want to upgrade? What do you want to achieve with the upgrade? OId GPU went bogus and I need to replace it. PC is used for gaming but not exensively and mostly for older titles. I think that Dota2 will be most requiring game. Recently 2 GPUs from 2 PCs in home just straight up stopped working, both around 2.5 years old. Livespan will be most important feature (but I know it's mostly luck here). Also 3 year warranty
What is your budget? around 500 PLN = 120 euro
What country will you be buying your parts in? Poland
If you have any brand or retailer preferences, please specify. Retailer -> local brand (komputronik). They are a bit more pricy if you compare with other retailers, but I had only good experience with their RMA.
I have already selected 3 models that might be good: Radeon R7 260X Asus 1GB DDR5 DVI&HDMI&DP (PCI-E) OC 489 PLN = 118 EUR Radeon R7 260X Gigabyte 2GB DDR5 DVI&HDMI&DP (PCI-E) OC 493 PLN = 118 EUR Radeon R7 260X MSI 2GB DDR5 DVI&HDMI&DP (PCI-E) OC V1 460 PLN = 111 EUR (I don't want to OC, but there are no models without 'OC' tag)
Any suggestion which one will be best? Or are there any better choices?
