Here you are: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182066&cm_re=rosewill_capstone-_-17-182-066-_-Product

Rosewill is Newegg's brand or something, the OEM for Capstone is Superflower I think.

Thanks! It says that this one is the newer version of the same product: www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182066 which comes with a 20$ MIR. Should I go with that one?

It depends on how Heroes of the Storm goes but the GTX 970 is probably overkill. In any case, it's over double what you need for the other two games.

Heroes is pretty similar to sc2 - a 970 will handle about 100-150fps at 4k resolution and near max settings, so about the same as sc2 and WoW. That's ~10x as demanding as 1080p@40fps

Those three games don't belong anywhere near "newer" games when buying a GPU, if you're buying for anything graphically heavy since ~2009 you're already buying more than you need for those games. They're all extremely light, none of them even support any form of antialiasing that creates a notable performance hit, etc. If you want more FPS, you just need a good CPU. When streaming those 3 games, even on a 60hz monitor, it's quite hard or even impossible to have a CPU that's completely overkill, but very easy to have a GPU that's overkill to the point of being at 20% load whenever your FPS is challenged at all.

@Above: Memory usage from live encoding (streaming) is pretty small. I didn't really check recently but ~200MB wouldn't surprise me, it's not big at all and doesn't really change the amount that you would buy for a system

So basically what you guys are saying is that I'm overbudgeted for my purpose-- I might be able to make a desktop that costs only $1,000, or even less, to do what I want. My goal is to stream these games while doing dual-monitor and video encoding. I'll do some thinking and research and see if I can find a cheaper build that meets my needs.

You just don't need a strong GPU for those games. Even a ~750ti would suffice - they're not comparable to newer or demanding games, so if you want to play those too then you'd probably find plenty of use for a mid-high end GPU

OK so I dug out my old tower and here's the details. This tower is 10 years old.

It's an Antec Sonata II which looks like it has room for an ATX mobo (I think that's what's in there right now). The expansion card slots have just over 5" vertical and 11.5" from the back to the HD Trays. I'm assuming I'll want a certain amount of clearance between the HDs and the GPU so this probably limits me to GPUs 10" or shorter in length.

It also has an EVGA 430W PSU. The PSU is currently able to power on the existing mobo, GPU, HDD, and CD Drive (all of which are far too ancient to actually be useful).

The mobo is super old and I seem to remember the CPU is like a single-core processor of some kind. The GPU is also similarly ancient. This computer was able to play Sc2 when it came out, but only barely. I doubt anything but the tower, the CD Drive, and maybe the PSU would be useful here. Assuming I have no care for the PSU, but I hold onto the case (which should be fine as long as I don't get a really long GPU), and that I can stream with a non-Oced i5, here's what my build looks like now:

CPU:
Intel i5-4590 - $200
GPU: MSI R9 280 (10.6") - $200
HSF: Cooler Master 212 - $35
Mobo: MSI Z97-G45 Gaming - $135
Memory: 8 GB Ram - $60
Storage: Intel 520 Series SSD 240GB - $110
Storage: WD Blue 7200RPM 1TB - $55
Case: Antec Sonata II
PSU: new EVGA 100-W1-0430-KR 430W - $30

subtotal: 825
total with tax: 900

This would leave me with enough cash left over to pick up a couple 1920x1080 monitors right away. I'd be able to stream my games with this setup and play new games as they come out.

Blazinghand's build version 3: the son of Build's revenge

CPU: Intel i5-4690k - $230
GPU: MSI R9 280 (10.6") - $200
HSF: Cooler Master 212 - $35
Mobo: MSI Z97-G45 Gaming - $135
Memory: 8 GB Ram - $60
Storage: Intel 520 Series SSD 240GB - $110
Storage: WD Blue 7200RPM 1TB - $55
Case: Antec Sonata II
PSU: Rosewill Capstone 450W - 45

subtotal: 870
with tax: 950

The newer version of the Capstone 450 is the same power supply with modular cables.

^That's actually $35 after mail in rebate, which is an amazing deal. You might as well get this one.

Hey everyone,

I've posted here last Saturday with my suggestion for a PC build (see lower). Sadly, I had to unexpectedly leave for couple of days and didn't really have time to respond, but thanks to everyone that contributed!

Hello everyone,

after couple of years, I've decided it's time to get a new PC. I currently have Dell Latitude E6530 that suffices for my gaming needs, but I'd like to use it just for work and get a dedicated PC for gaming.

I've made a first draft of possible build and I am looking for your opinion about it, namely I'd like to hear your opinions on what the bottle neck is and if there is a component that can be downgraded without significant impact onto performance.

Any constructive feedback is welcome ofcourse.

First of all, the basic questionaire:

Show nested quote +
What is your budget?
I would like to get it under € 700, but I'm flexible when I have a reason to be.

What is your monitor's native resolution?
Atm 1600x900, maybe ill get a new one with 1900x1080

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
I mostly play games that aren't on the high end of requirements (namely Dota 2), but the aim for the PC is to be able to run GTA V (and similar) on decent settings. No need for everything ultra, just midrange.

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Not much.

Do you intend to overclock?
If the CPU will be AMD, yes. Else, not at the moment.

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
No.

Do you need an operating system?
No, already have Win 8.1 licence.

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
No.

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
No.

What country will you be buying your parts in?
Czech Republic

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
None.

In this stage, I've only used webpage of one of the largest HW suppliers in country to get the components and pricing. Once I have my final draft I'll start looking for a possibilities to get the components cheaper, but for now I'll work with alza.cz prices as a reference frame.

The suggested build is as follows:
CPU: AMD FX-6300 - 102 EUR
MOBO:MSI 970 GAMING - 89 EUR
RAM: Kingston 8GB KIT DDR3 2666MHz CL11 HyperX XMP Predator Series - 104 EUR (2x4 Gb)
GPU: MSI R9 270 Gaming 2G - 167 EUR
PSU: Corsair HX620W - 0 EUR (already own this one)
Case: Zalman Z3 - 34 EUR (just a placeholder basically, I don't really need a fancy case, all I'm looking for is good access to USB and audio ports)
HSF: GELID Solutions Tranquillo - 25 EUR
SSD: Kingston SSDNow V300 240GB 7mm - 102 EUR
HDD: Western Digital Blue 1000GB 64MB cache - 56 EUR (I am currently planning to build a dedicated PC for data storage and home cinema, so I've no need for excessive data storage).

That is pretty much if for now. Thank you for any suggestions / critique!

Based on the comments, suggestions and own curiosity, I've since done some research, mainly on Intel/AMD CPU comparsions, OC possibilities etc.

I've come to the conclusion that since my PC is mainly for gaming, Intel CPU is indeed better. Thus, I've reviewed my previous build and reconsidered the budget. I came up with two possible builds:

1) 550 EUR in total
+ Show Spoiler +

CPU: Intel Core i3-4160 - 105 EUR
MOBO: ASUS H97M-E - 80 EUR
RAM:
Kingston 8GB KIT DDR3 1600MHz CL10 HyperX Fury Blue
- 75 EUR
GPU: MSI N750Ti TF 2GD5/OC Gaming - 145 EUR
PSU: Corsair HX620W - 0 EUR (already own this one)
Case: Zalman Z3 - 35 EUR
HSF: Stock - 0 EUR
SSD: Intel 520 120GB SSD bulk - 55 EUR
HDD: Western Digital Blue 1000GB 64MB cache - 55 EUR(I don't need to store large amounts of data on this PC.)

Note: I wouldn't OC any components, thus the stock HSF.

2) 830 EUR in total
+ Show Spoiler +

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K - 235 EUR
MOBO: GIGABYTE Z97X-Gaming 3 - 115 EUR
RAM:
Kingston 8GB KIT DDR3 2666MHz CL11 HyperX XMP Predator Series
- 105 EUR
GPU: MSI Gaming N760 TF 2GD5/OC - 205 EUR
PSU: Corsair HX620W - 0 EUR (already own this one)
Case: Zalman Z3 - 35 EUR
HSF: GELID Solutions Tranquillo - 25 EUR
SSD: Intel 520 120GB SSD bulk - 55 EUR
HDD: Western Digital Blue 1000GB 64MB cache - 55 EUR(I don't need to store large amounts of data on this PC.)

Note: Based on what I know, this CPU and MoBo should allow for decent OC possibilities.

Now, I have couple of questions for you (and I ofcourse welcome any criticism and notes, not just towards asnwering the questions):

1) Are there any critical mistakes in those builds?
2) Does the increased budged for build no.2 reflect in rise in performace (aka would it be 50% "better")?
3) Is there point in trying to have GPU and MoBo from the same manufacturer?

Thanks a lot for any input!

~ $1200.

1920x1080 most likely (need a new one).

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
High settings on such things as Farcry 4, Dragon Age, Civ 5, Diablo 3. I'll stream occassionally, but as a hobby, not a career path.

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Watching movies/streams, photo development (Adobe Lightroom, etc), general office tasks.

Do you intend to overclock?
Yes.

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
No.

Do you need an operating system?
Yes. Probably Windows 7.

Yes, a new monitor. This is one area that I definitely need help picking something nice without getting ripped off.

What country will you be buying your parts in?
U.S.A.

In short, I'm trying to decide whether to buy during black Friday or wait until Christmas. Since I haven't been tracking technology that much, I'm not sure which components to expect to find deals on (i.e. will there be a good enough deal on a higher end component to warrant changing my entire build?). I have flexibility in how much I'm spending so I'm trying to get the most value out of whatever I end up buying. Thanks for the help.

This is generally what I'm thinking: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/f47cNG

I'll be using a previous case/dvd rom etc. I have a 450w power supply that's a couple years old - will that be enough for this build? I went with what seemed a safe/popular monitor, so if someone has a better option please let me know.
Any feedback is much appreciated.

I feel like there's virtually no reason to spend that much on a computer and use a standard 24" 1080p TN monitor like that like most people get, especially at that kind of price.

All monitors are compromised in one way or another, so it's up to you which attributes you prioritize, but something like that is ticking the good-at-nothing box. If you want the best responsiveness and low blur for a better gaming experience without losing out in quality anywhere, you can pay $100 more for that, and it might well be worth it. If you want much better color consistency across the whole screen (no solid colors, webpages looking like gradients from top to bottom when they're not supposed to be) and better overall picture quality and ability to judge and process photos at the expense of very slightly more motion blur, you can get that for a similar price. If you want better color consistency and much deeper blacks at the expense of somewhat more motion blur, that's also available at a similar price.

Personally for the intended usage I'd recommend the second option. You can get a Dell P2414H for $160 after promo code (ends today, do it now; EMCWWWB36):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824260149

The rest looks good to me.

Thanks for the feedback. I changed the monitor and the CPU cooler (http://pcpartpicker.com/p/ncVnwP). I'll pick up a second display to replace my old one at some point, so I'm happy to specialize somewhat. Now to find the deals that show up.

3) no
2) for games like dota 2 or other non AAA titles you probably won't notice that much difference. Your best bang for the buck would probably be to use the GPU from system 1 in system 2.
1) System 2 would also run on a much cheaper mobo: http://www.alza.cz/asus-h81m-e-d562702.htm (unless you have other requirements). Someone else can also speculate if the fan in Sys 1 would be enough to OC...
Typically you can also get better price / performance from AMD video cards as well - the R9 270 you listed in your initial build is good step up from the 750ti for 20€ (I'd feel more confident with it for GTA V at least).

3) no
2) for games like dota 2 or other non AAA titles you probably won't notice that much difference.

Thanks for the suggestions; I'll definitely consider going AMD R9 2X0 family.

As for your 1), IMO that MoBo would be insufficient for that system, especialy with OC and those RAMs. But I might be wrong.

A wide range, no specifics. Some graphics intensive, some not, but the ability to max out any of them except for maybe that one extreme like Battlefield 3 was at the time.

Is it justifiable to spend $50 more on a r9 290 for 1080 gaming over a 280x?

Edit: Ty Cyro, much appreciated.

Hi guys, Cyber Monday is around the corner and I'm looking for potentially cheap upgrades!

What is your current build?
CPU: Intel Core i5-4570 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor
Motherboard: ASRock H81M-HDS Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Tactical 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Samsung 840 Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost 2GB Video Card
Case: Fractal Design Core 1000 USB 3.0 MicroATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Corsair Builder 430W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V Power Supply
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit)
Monitor: Asus VS229H-P 21.5" Monitor

What is your monitor's native resolution?
1980x1080

Why do you want to upgrade? What do you want to achieve with the upgrade?
Upcoming sales! Also want to try my hand at beginner's 3D rendering (just simple stuff). I'll probably just end up getting 2 8GB ram sticks and up my power supply or something. Maybe increase HD storage to 2TB. Current rig is more than adequate for my games (mostly blizzard and steam stuff on default settings).

What is your budget?
$500

What country will you be buying your parts in?
USA

If you have any brand or retailer preferences, please specify.
Biggest bang for buck

Thanks!
