Current rig is more than adequate for my games

i dunno really what to say aside from as much RAM as you need (is 8GB really not enough? For that, you'd have to buy 4GB and not 16GB..)

Yea 16GB is overkill, I don't think my rig can even make use of all that RAM. Should I get the same 4GB stick or get something different?

Requesting help finding a replacement intel lga 1155 Ivy Bridge motherboard in CANADA. I am looking at this list of mobos for now: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/parts/motherboard/#s=14&sort=a7

Current (and failing) motherboard is: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/asrock-motherboard-z77extreme4
Would fix it if I could, it has happened to others

Template!
+ Show Spoiler +
What is your current build?
http://pastebin.com/Z3Jef21d

Why do you want to upgrade? What do you want to achieve with the upgrade?
mobo problems: Overclock options are missing from BIOS, integrated GPU options missing from BIOS --> Can't use Intel HD4000, can't overclock.

What is your budget?
Under 150, under 100 hopefully

Features I'm hoping to have:
Small CPU overclock
Prefer Dr. Debug and beep speaker debug
Prefer it working out-of-box, i won't be able to use an older system to flash required software (don't know if this is relevant)
SATA 6gbs x 1 unless 3 is enough for an older SSD

What country will you be buying your parts in?
CANADA
Intel Dual Core 4400 @ ~2.00GHz / 2046MB RAM / 256 MB ATI Radeon x1300PRO

Hello Guys, with black friday coming up my friend told me to suggest him a notebook (15,6") for playing SC2 on low settings and he wants to starts making his own music.
His budget is kind of tight (can$ 600), so I take refurbished ones in consideration as well.
Location is Vancouver, BC if that matters.
These were my suggestions so far:

http://www.openbox.ca/fujitsu-lifebook-ah564-4th-gen-intel-core-i5-4200m-2-5ghz-8gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive-8gb-hybrid-sshd-win-8-1-intel-hd-graphics-4600-integrated-dual-layer-multi-fromat-dvd-writer-6-cell.html

http://www.ncix.com/detail/hp-pavillion-15-n030ca-intel-core-12-93523-1013.htm

Can you make any good suggestions or point out which one do you think would be the best choice?

What is your budget?
I would prefer it to be under 800 but 950 is the max.

What is your monitor's native resolution?
1920x1080

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
Street Fighter (max), Arma 2, Arma 3, Doto 2, CS:GO, SC2, EUIV. I'm not too concerned about graphics as long as they're not putrid and it runs well. I would like to be able to play new games without much hassle on at least medium-high.

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Programming and other general things like watching movies and streams. If possible it would be nice to be able to stream at an okay quality but not essential.

Do you intend to overclock?
I'd prefer to if it doesn't mess up anything else in the build(cost wise).

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
No

Do you need an operating system?
No

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
No

If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
None.

What country will you be buying your parts in?
USA USA USA

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
None.

For $300 in the CPU / motherboard budget you might as well get an i5 4690 with an H97 motherboard. That should be superior for gaming. Arma 3 is tough to run I think, maybe put a bit more money into the graphics card and go up to an R9 280 or GTX 760.

Are the builds on front page of pcpartpicker reliable? If so, I may just copy the builds.

Also, if you build a new computer, you have to buy a brand new OS for it right? So that's like another $100 added.

Not when they advocate the use of a CX600 PSU with an R9 290 and an i5 4460 instead of an i5 4690. Dual channel RAM is preferable to a single stick as well.

They're not that great, you're better off asking in this thread really.

A copy of windows does indeed cost $100, though there are other ways to obtain it for much less if you'res resourceful. One example is to use MS's Dreamspark program if you're a student.

The 4200m one (first) is ok specs-wise but keep in mind that it's still pretty low end, dual core with only integrated graphics

I would also like to play SC2 late game

FX, or processors from earlier than that period (~2009) are not really usable for sc2. You generally want something at least equivalent to stock intel from almost 4 years ago (i5 2500) or something overclocked to match that (first gen core, maybe phenom II or piledriver) - but there's a lot more performance to gain after that level, through newer cpu gen (haswell) and overclocking

+ Show Spoiler +

This is a benchmark run that puts extreme pressure on system (huge amounts of units) - relative FPS between CPU's is always pretty much the same, so a 20fps vs 30fs for example would turn into 40 vs 60
[image loading]

Haswell is something like twice as fast as fx, and that advantage is maintained with or without overclocking. Also, since sc2 needs ~1.4 cores, the Pentium g3258 isn't hugely slower than the 4670k/4770k, but any intel CPU of current gen you buy, oc or not, will beat FX cpu at any clock speed for that game engine (and some others)

Hello folks,
I am looking to build a desktop that can run any modern game on decent setting for as cheap as possible. Maybe 600 tops. I do have everything outside of a tower. I wanted to use ongoing deals too. Please advice if you can, I would rly appreciate. Thank you so much.

I'm looking to finally buy the parts for this build that I requested earlier. It looks like NCIX and Newegg's Black Friday sales have already started. Can you guys look over the build that GeneralStan recommended originally and see if anything should be changed?

I noticed that Newegg has the Rosewill Capstone 450-M for $55. (Or, $35 after $20 rebate card? Is that a normal rebate that you send in or something special to Newegg?) Seems like a good replacement for the Corsair 430W that GeneralStan recommended for $45.

Helping a friend put together a computer. I need some help picking out parts.

Budget
Up to $1500 total but probably more like $1200. I am thinking ~$900 for the computer and then the rest for a monitor.

Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
Monitor as mentioned above.

What is your monitor's native resolution?
No monitor yet. 23" or 27". He doesn't play games competitively nor does photo editing so I'm not sure what he needs.

What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
He'll play whatever AAA titles come out most likely. Doubt he cares about anti-aliasing but looking at high settings.

What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Word processing and movie watching.

Do you intend to overclock?
I can overclock it before handing it off to him. I understand how to do it generally but I haven't done it before.

Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
No

Do you need an operating system?
I plan to get him a Win 8 key.

What country will you be buying your parts in?
Canada

If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
Any online retailer is fine. I'm familiar with NCIX, Memoryexpress, and Newegg.

As for storage, Crucial MX100 256GB and a 1.5 or 2TB mechanical drive would suffice.
Also, unless we need a big case for the videocard or aftermarket CPU cooler for overclocking, I really like the Corsair 350D mATX.

You guys are awesome; Thanks for any help! I'll post in the TL Monitor Thread if you guys don't want to worry about that part of it.

I stuck to your exact parts / desired specs as close as possible.

Ended up being a shade under $1000 before shipping, so a little above your $900 budget. I think it's worth stretching to get up to a GTX 970. I also think the Haswell i5 is a worthwhile investment. If I was going to try to find something to trim, I think your storage requirements and case are a little pricey. I already cut back from a 1.5/2 TB (on newegg anyway, the 2 TB is less expensive than 1.5TB anyway) to a 1 TB HDD to get it under $1000.

If you had to get it down to $900 you could always scale back on graphics, but this seems like gtx 970 level budget. You can also pick up a perfectly nice case for $50 or so to save yourself a few pennies.

That's what I've got though

I'd get the XFX Core 450W if you have it or the Capstone 450W. The CX430 is OK for small web-browsing / office builds, less good if you're going for a gaming rig. Even if Haswell and Maxwell don't draw a lot of power, you should spend $10-20 more to get a good PSU.

I'd skimp on the case here and get something like a Cooler Master N200 to save money though that's just me. I guess the 350D looks nice enough. I would still consider the N200 just because it's such a nice case for $57.

http://www.ncix.com/detail/cooler-master-n200-matx-18-84140.htm

Another case you should get your friend to look at is the NZXT S340, which is actually a pretty nice case for a rig such as this one. At $80 I think it's better than the 350D. Normally I would also recommend the Fractal Core 3500 however it's actually a bit too expensive at NCIX.

http://www.ncix.com/detail/nzxt-source-340-atx-steel-ad-100441.htm

Review:

Maybe look into price matching though.

I'm really liking mATX cases because they're smaller and lighter with no disadvantages that I can see. I don't know why I would ever build with an ATX case again if I can get the same performance out of a smaller case. Don't need all that extra room for SLI/Crossfire, never going to need more than one optical drive, more than two SSDs+two HDs, etc.

The NZXT S340 is ATX so I'm not a fan. Are there any other well-priced and well-regarded mATX cases that you guys can recommend?

Rebates are specific to the manufacturer / retailer.

Also keep in mind that newegg.com does not ship to Canada unless you plan on shipping it to a friend or using some forwarding service.

use paypal on tigerdirect and use visa checkout on newegg to save 40 or so more dollars

Then either "obtain" windows7/8.1 or get the windows 10 free preview

then http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820228073 if you did not spend money on windows

Thank you, this looks pretty amazing for the money. I might end up just going with this. + Show Spoiler +
Do you think I can do better if I don't get the barebones kit? 370$ is good but maybe I can get by without a 1TB hdd and 650W PSU? Unless it's similar to inferior specs moneywise which then is a nobrainer.

Silly question - I have about 200$ on BestBuy giftcard. Is there anything there that you can recommend using for this build? I have "built" towers before but it was years ago and you can probably point it out to me easier.

Thank you!

P.S. I would be all set on Windows

Nvm this barebones kit seems like an amazing deal for the money
