Details of problem:
I turned my laptop (dell inspiron 17r 5720) and the wifi is off. Usually not a problem, (press fn + f2) but today, i pressed fn + f2 and i still didn't get any wifi. The led next to pwr led, and hdd led, was on so i thought that i should have wifi.
I didn't.

Solutions and measures conducted:
I tried restarting the laptop but still no wifi.
I tried using the windows trouble shoot after right click on the (empty and with red cross over it) connection icon, but it tells me i need to connect to wifi or lan. No help there.
I tried going into control panel and finding my wifi adapter. I disabled it and re-enabled it but still no wifi.
I launched intel Pro-SET (i have some intel centrino wifi card) and tried the diagnostic tool there: I got failed test with error "Software radio is off." The troubleshooting manual said to go into control panel >> hardware and sound and manually launch the radio. Tried that, but still not wifi.
Went into BIOS to see if wifi card had been disabled, but didn't find anything and exited with discard changes.
I have no idea what else to try.

Recent changes to hardware/software
Hardware: no changes.
Software: I had a new wireless mouse that had some drivers, but after that, the wifi still worked (this was one day before wifi stopped working).

System specs

Windows 8
Intel i7 3632QM
Nvidia Geforce gt630m (and HD4000; never had any issues with this cause this has been system configuration since day 1)
8GB DDR3
1TB Harddrive
6-cell 48kwh battery.

I was having the same problems after I installed Windows 8. After a while it came back and fixed on its own. Make sure you download the latest drivers for your pc.

Try reinstalling touchpad drivers. In one laptop i had, the drivers where directly linked to the keyboard aswell. So the function keys didnt work properly or at all.

The function keys are working:
I press Fn+f2 and the wifi led (near power led and hdd led) goes on. But the red x still remains over empty bar and i get "wifi off" on screen.

Windows 8 was factory installed (by dell) and im not sure as to dell's warranty policy about installing software not provided by dell. Will check into that.

Try looking in the BIOS as well or worst case just contact dell maybe it's defect....

Have you tried uninstalling the wifi drivers and then reinstalling said drivers (after a reboot)?

The (fn + f2) way of enabling wifi is usually not connected to the software enable/disable of the wifi. You can have the wifi on using (fn + f2) while it's still off in the wifi software. Make sure it's enabled in Intel Proset as well (I think it's at the bottom left when you open the software if they haven't changed it since I last used it) or try reinstalling drivers and intel proset if it's also on.

did you try hitting the little button near the power button to turn it back on? I had this happen to me the other day with a friends lapop. I even went as far as reinstalling windows and wifi still wouldnt work. Then I picked up the laptop and was about to flip it to switch the wireless cards, and saw the switch was set to off ._.

Try really obvious things first. They're usually the ones that are looked over.

When you enter the network properties (right click on "Network places" or whatever it is) do you see it listed amongst the adapters? If so, see if the icon is greyed out. If it is that means it's disabled. You should be able to just right click and select enable to turn it on.

I thought of something. Windows Update likes to download the "INTEL" version of the wireless drivers (as opposed to the "Dell" version). What I would try is to either visit Dell.com and download the dell version of the intel wireless driver (this is what controls the PROset software). The FN+F2 button controls the "hardware radio "swtich. If Software Radio is off and PROset can't turn it back on, then its a driver issue and I can't think to why else this would have happened unless Windows Update went and downloaded a new driver on its own (windows update likes to take control of downloading drivers thinking its smart, but it was wrong as usual).

Something I thought would be obvious to you but i might mention is, there is a taskbar icon (related to wifi) that you can enable and disable the wireless through. This is the quote unquote software radio that its mentioning that is off. So check that first, then try re-downloading drivers as i mentioned above.

taskbar icon?
The only one of which i know is the bars (with the red x).
I click on that and it shows
airplane mode: off

wifi off

but there is no option to turn on wifi. Is that the correct icon? (it usually lists a bunch of connections instead of "wifi off"

I actually killed my "Network-Subsystem" or whatever it is in Win7 while shutting down my Notebook while a VPN-Client was running. Even if the Hardware was installed and enabled (Lan and wifi card). None of them Worked.
Check out your ressource Tab on Taskmanager ( wich shows the current network connection use)
If there is NONE shown you have to reinstall Windows.
The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.

It sounds like you are talking about the bars to the default windows 8 wifi interface. He's most likely talking about the icon to the wifi software that you usually get with the computer (I think it may replace the windows 8 icon if you have it installed but I'm not sure). At least with the dell computers I've owned with previous windows versions it's looked something like this: (assuming you have intel proset installed):
If you right click and pick configure you get to the properties:
Then you get to this:
At the bottom left there's a software on/off option that's separate from the (fn+f2). That what was I was trying to convey earlier. Maybe dell have removed the third party software for windows 8 or something or it doesn't show up for some reason. Did you try to reinstall the drivers (the one you can find on dells site for your computer including any utilities for your wifi)?

Preferable download it from dell that's connected to your computer or secondly download it directly from intel:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=21642&lang=eng&OSVersion=Windows 8, 64-bit*&DownloadType=Drivers

ok thank you everyone. I am typing this from the laptop and the wifi is working.

I got the drivers DVD and used that.
Repaired the intel wireless drivers (w/e) that means.
Tried to reinstall the intel bluetooth driver but it only deleted.
Got the latest bluetooth drivers from the dell website and reinstalled.

When that finished the
"bluetooth devices" icon popped into the icons list. Wasn't there before. Goes on and off when i press fn+f2.
Inside, there was a wifi on/off set to off. turned that to on and, well, now it's working.

Thank you to everyone who helped me solve this problem.

Something if this sort was happening to me every time i pit my windows 8 computer on airplane mode but I just fixed it... I went to "control panel" and then to "view network status and tasks" and then "troubleshoot problems" - from there you will see network: (and a listing items such as Internet Connections, ect ) click on network adapter. Go trough the troubleshoot and then you apply it and it should come on. Good luck

This is most likely due to the Intel Proset Software disabling your wifi card due to a ethernet cable being connected to the computer.

I have had the same issue as described by OP, tried all kind of combinations and could not get my wifi to switch on even though it was listed as enabled in Network Devices however it would not scan to return a list of available wifi networks.

What I did eventually is, into Device Manager, clicked into Network Adapters and right clicked onto my Intel Wifi Device to Uninstall and ticked the box to delete the driver. Once done I simply installed the latest driver from Intel and viola!! wifi back to normal and fn/switch working normally with no red cross over wifi icon in the task bar.

Just my 2c, hope it helps!
