I have a question about overlays: how do I get the transparency to work? For some reason the white background on all the images I use, even if transparent on photoshop, still shows up? So instead of "overlaying" the stream it covers all of it. Is there something I can do?

Are you using png or gif files? png always worked fine for me.

Ohhh... PNGs work well. I tried jpg and bmp to no avail. Thanks!

No, i just meant your CPU. Its a Phenom II x4.

At stock speeds, an i5 3570k has ~150-170% of the performance of an x4 695, and overclocked (which is what im kinda used to dealing with) you can have ~220%+ performance, which translates into having a massive amount more performance (fps and everything else) in any game that is CPU bound or has graphical settings turned down enough to be CPU bound

Its just a matter of having an older and cheaper CPU vs having an overclocked gaming flagship.

While I still understand what you're saying, you're still quoting the wrong CPU.

One number in the wrong place. Damnit.

Considering they are (as I understand it) different CPU's and I'm just trying to make sure we're on the same page, I'd think that matters. I'm not by any means fluent in understanding CPU performance, I take what I read at a very basic level and can decipher what's important and how things measure up against each other - but as I stated, the CPU you're quoting is different from what I have in age, so theoretically, if you are referring to the one you're talking about, then yes, it's very old.

Thanks anyways.

3.40 Ghz AMD Phenom II X4 965

I wrote 695 instead of 965. I dont think a Phenom II x4 695 even exists.. either way you said 3.4ghz Phenom II x4, which is all of the information required

I generally see people recommend aero = off when using screen cap, and aero = on when using game source. Is this ideal? Is game source really better with aero on or does it just not matter?

It doesn't matter if aero is off or on for game capture. The only case when you want it off is when doing monitor capture.

i can't add Broodwar to my scenes list as either software or a game now. I had it before but got frustrated by not being able to play fullscreen, so I removed it, now R1CH's program is in my plugin folder and I can't add broodwar. I tried removing, and uninstalling and reinstalling and I still can't add it. Any ideas?

The plugin is likely incompatible with the new version, plus it doesn't really work properly. Will look into it when I have some more time.

G'day all, I'm new to streaming, I was wondering if it would be possible to stream HotS at 1080p@30fps with my current setup? I believe my hardware should be adequate, but I've moved into a new sharehouse for university and am unsure about internet speeds...

Specs are:
Gigabyte Radeon HD7970 Ghz Ed. at stock speeds
i7 3770k @4.4 Ghz
[image loading]

My other big question is if it's possible to stream with just OBS and Twitch? Do I need to purchase any software? I've been reading a bunch on this thread but I'm still confused as to whether OBS replaces Xplit/Fraps or if it works in co-operation with them...

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

You could stream 1080p @ 30fps easy, but with your bitrate you would be looking at pixelation everywhere. I would say like maybe a 480p @ 60fps 500kbps on like a fast preset would look pretty good. Yes it is possible to stream with just obs and twitch, no other purchases would be needed.

Obviously your only downside is your upload speed, which most aussies suffer from.

What is the difference between bitrate and resolution? Is resolution the number of pixels? And bitrate the amount of "info" (different colours) per pixel? If that's it then I don't really see a difference between them ^^

You're confusing bitrate with bit depth.

Ahhh! More terminology! Can you explain what resolution and bitrate mean? And what about bit depth?

Bitrate is the amount of data being streamed (usually measured in "kilobits per second" or "kbps" in streaming applications). Higher bitrate = better looking stream.

Resolution is the number of pixels being displayed. 1080p is 1920x1080. (width x height), 720p is 1280x720, etc.

Frankly, I doubt you need to bother yourself with learning what bit depth is. It's pretty irrelevant from a streamer perspective, but I guess you could skim the pictures at least: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_depth

That's not particularly helpful. How are the two related? I thinjk ih can have a nicer looking 720p stream compared to a 1080p one if the bitrate is higher, why is that?

Because lossless data takes up an extremely large amount of space, thousands of megabits per second. A modern 720/1080p stream will use something like 3mbits bitrate - there's a ton of compression. Bitrate is very simple, just the amount of data you are allocating for the encoded file output (if you set 5mbits, your video file will be 5mbits per second, 300mbits per minute) x264 has amazing efficiency and makes video look good at bitrates comparatively tiny compared to raw video, but you still need certain bitrates for a video to look good. At 1mbit for example, a 1920x1080 stream will get very pixelated, messy etc during motion but a 1280x720 stream might not nearly as much, because you have less than half as many pixels to deal with, it takes a lot less data. At 5mbits, the 1920x1080 stream would destroy the 1280x720 one, because you have 2.25x as many pixels and enough data assigned to encoding for the video to come out "ok"

If you mean you can have a better looking 720p stream than a 1080p stream if you use for example 2mbit bitrate for the 720p one and 1mbit for the 1080p, thats pretty simple logic once you know how to look at it.

The 100MB video unless something is wrong will look a lot better than the 50MB one
