squeezing more fps out of a laptop

ive been currently been driven by desperation to tweek a bunch of of variables on my variables.txt in order to get more fps for sc2. my laptop is really crappy but it used to be able to play the game fine until the recent patches. ive already adjusted a bunch of variables on the txt file and im wondering if there is still anything else i can still do to improve the performance. here is a copy of the variables.txt file im using atm. i get up to 60 fps regularly but at times it still dips to 5 fps which is really frustrating.

its a toshiba i3 cpu 2.4ghz with an integrated graphics card. sux but its the only thing i got

Change shadowmapsize to 4
By doing that you are basically removing ALL of shadows in game lol.
Mine was at default (512) and having 50 fps and when I changed it to 4 I started to get 100's.
This ofc doesnt look good for people who are used to high graphics but I didnt care much

Also. Dont forget to run preloader when you want to play. Blizz fucked up 1.5 patch so you can run preloader to load all the cache thingys which will improve your sudden drop in FPS

Personally, the thing that squeezes the most fps out of my computer is turning the resolution to minimum. It's 4:3, but it's like 20 extra fps, and to me that's worth it. Consider it.

i played around with this a bit. found out that shadowmapsize can be lower to 2. changing terraintexturesize to 128 also greatly improve fps. waterendertargetsize can be 2 also. or 1. dont know if it work afterpatched. terraintexturesize is what saved me. i have it on 8 bites with TerrainTextureHiResCacheSize=40
TerrainTextureLowResCacheSize=40. can see burrowed infestors and roaches because the terrain is nearly blank. can still see creep. also removing fogs and unit shadows help a lot. will greatly improve fps with fog=0 GraphicsOptionShadowQuality=1 shadowmapsize=1

variables.txt

Make sure to copy your old variables.txt file to some other location before doing any changes.

If you open the Starcraft 2 folder in My Documents, it's in there. Called variables.txt.

I changed nothing but the shadowmapsize, and i have 20-30 fps more than before. Now i can actually play the game again.

Didn't they fix the preloader bug in patch 1.5.2?

Im experimenting with variables.txt to see if I can get an FPS boost, one thing I've noticed with low textures is creep becomes very vague, is there any way to make the edges harder?

Also, is there a list of all the variable parameters somewhere?

If that's the only problem, isn't there a setting to get the max view on cloak units while keeping the rest to absolute minimum?

I'm on a desktop but since the patch, any 10+ min TvZ means 20 fps tops because of creep spread, it's completely unplayable and I was considering some options

LE: In the same line, are there any cloak-related menu-settings that I can only enable in TvT and TvP?

while changing resolution is fine, you need to keep the 16 aspect ratio I believe. you can do a search for it.

If you already play on a good computer is changing the variable.txt even worth it? I tried changing everything but couldn't notice a difference in fps from normal low to the changed variable.txt both we're around 240-250 frames.

You have to change variables.txt that belongs to the spesific account you log in. Those will rewrite the settings in "My Documents" variables...

I too am on a shitty laptop, but I don't understand the complaints about the new patch. Up until the patch I would play a ladder game starting at ~25-30 fps on a good day, and near the endgame getting 10-15 fps, and watching large battles made it really hard to micro with less than 10 fps.

With the new patch, I'm starting games at 40-50 fps and never going below 20 even in the endgame. I have no idea what was changed by the patch but it got a lot more out of my comp. I didn't change any graphics settings myself by the way.

Not changing this to enGB would give you a language pack error as you tried to play unless you are on a US version of the game.

To answer your question: Yes it would be enough to change enUS to enGB to make boomudead's settings work on an English EU client.

shadowmapsize=4 really helped. my laptop doesnt get as hot now too. still looking for any further tweaks. im also using gamebooster with sc2.. i think it helps..

i had this problem too when i tried it out. took me a few hours to figure out the perfect 40/40. again. hard to see cloaked units. but can spot burrowed moving roaches/infestors easily. kinda sucks unless someone figures it out.
