I have a new PC with an ASUS DRW-24B1ST CD/DVD-RW drive. The drive does not read or write CDs or DVDs correctly.

Info:
OS: Windows 7 SP1 x64
MOBO: ASUS P9X79
Device Full Name (as reported by Device Manager): ASUS DRW-24B1ST c SCSI CdRom Device
Driver: Microsoft Generic CD Driver 6.1.7600.16385 (win7_rtm.090713-1255)

Error Details:
1: Insertion of a file system DVD which I know contains files (I can read them on two other PCs) turns up as blank in windows explorer.

2: Attempting to write files to the drive (CD or DVD) results is a disk with a partially written section (eg. in one test I burnt 3.9GB to a 4.7GB DVD and when holding the disk up to the light only about 1/8th of the radius of the disk had been burnt) and windows explorer still thinks it is a blank disk when re-inserted.

My Attempted Fixes:
1: The "Update Driver..." automatic driver update from the Device Manager reports the latest drivers are installed no matter which options you select (including from a folder).

2: I downloaded the ASUS DRW-24B1ST Firmware 1.03 from ASUS's website and ran it to get the following error message:

No matched drive detected !
This utility is only for ASUS DRW-24B1ST drive.

Detected drives:
0-3-0-0 E:ASUS DRW-24B1ST c 1.05

I assume that is because there is a version incompatibility. But I can't find a Firmware download for 1.05.

I assume this is a driver or firmware issue. But to be honest I have no idea. Just in case it is the disks (why?) I used Memorex CD's and Philips 4.7GB DVD's.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Off hand I'd say it was a bad drive.

But am I reading this correctly, you've got a SCSI DVD drive? Asus Support reports it's a SATA drive, so I have no idea why in the world device manager would be seeing it as a SCSI device... O.o

There may be a way to "force" the firmware update, which might work as I suspect there's an issue with the device's firmware. But I'd say if it's a brand new PC contact the manufacturer about RMA'ing the part. Sounds broke to me. A SATA optical drive should be pretty much "plug and play".
I like the way the walls go out. Gives you an open feeling. Firefly's a good design. People don't appreciate the substance of things. Objects in space. People miss out on what's solid.

First off, unfortunately I do not have an answer for you, but I registered here because I'm have the exact same problem - the drive, operating system, though a different ASUS board. My drive's current driver is 6.1.7601.17514 and I also haven't had any luck trying to install a different version of the drivers.

I've spent a significant amount of time on the phone with ASUS and Newegg customer support to no avail. Perhaps we can put our heads together on this and help each other out?

I just checked, the BIOS thinks it's a SATA device and recognizes it as such. Windows 7 apparently didn't get the memo. From the googling I've done people seem to think it make no difference if the drive is recognized as SATA or SCSI, it should work either way. I'll RMA it if I don't find an answer soon.

Nice to know it's not only me reparadigm. If I find anything I'll post it here. By the fact that there are two of us I'm inclined to believe it a software issue more.

Sounds great. I've also found a guy on Tom's hardware with the same problem that posted within the week. It seems to be possibly tied with Windows 7 64-bit systems.

I'm pretty sure the drive works since I used it for driver DVD's and CD's when I assembled the build, but I suppose it stopped shortly after some Windows Update. I just didn't catch it early enough to restore and search for the issue.

Just so you know, I called ASUS today and spoke with a rep who was convinced the drive was defective, so I'm going through the RMA process now. Before today I spoke with two reps who weren't helpful at all, but just keep giving it a shot and eventually you'll find someone who can give you a hand.
