My laptop, which has been had occasional BSOD problems, has been hit by KSOD and I have no idea how to fix it.
For those who do not know, KSOD is when your computer starts up and runs normally, but instead of the log-in screen, you get a black screen and your mouse cursor.
It had actually happened to me a couple days before, but I was able to fix it via System Restore .. but I tried that solution again and my laptop has no restore points to restore from. Ctrl+alt+delete doesn't work. I can access the command prompt, but that's when i go into System Recovery mode.
I would really prefer to not have to resort to a format, as there are a lot of files of sentimental value on my computer that I wouldn't be able to replace ..
Computer specs: Dell Laptop (think its studio, but not sure) Windows 7 64-bit prem i7 processor 8 gig ram integrated gfx/sound card nothing else comes off the top of my head ..

So there are a bunch of reason that you would get a black screen, pretty muchall of them having to do with your HDD or the OS on that HDD.
Confirm that BIOS is recognizing your HDD and set to boot from it first.
Can you boot into safe mode at all or do you have a Windows disk that you can try to boot repair from? Your HDD could be fried also, but usually when I see this it is from a bootmgr issue with Windows.
...but if it has happened multiple times in a short period, I would guess either a bad/loose/dying HDD or malware of some type, but the HDD would be my first bet...

Well...as you have a ot valuable data on that HDD, I guess ou should start and try to save those first. Meaning, if you have a desktop maybe (or a friend of yours), take out the HDD and plug it into another PC. Copy all the files onto anoter HDD and afterwards, format the HDD and reinstall windows.
If you dont have any chance of copying data from the HDD (which I dont believe), then try to boot from a Windows CD and use the repair console.
As your system restore finally led into another KSOD there is something pretty much wrong, may it be the installation or hardware, like a dying HDD, wrong BIOS settings.

I can boot into safe mode, but I still get KSOD .. I don't have a Windows disk at the moment (but a friend has one), but I can access System Recovery options through the advanced boot options and select Startup Repair (though that doesn't detect any problems). Is that similar?
and I guess I should probably invest in a new HDD if I can save all my files first ];

Yeah, it sounds like there is something wrong. I would back up your files, if you can, but also run malware/virus on the drive when you hook it up to confirm that you are not passing it on, but it sounds like a failing HDD to me, at least from what info we have available. You could try to reimage, but if it is a failing HDD, then it won't due much good in the long run at all. I have to side that the issue is hardware, not software related on this one.
