Steelseries Siberia V2 Mic Problems.

So, I recently got the Siberia v2, and for the most part I'm quite happy with it.

However, my friends are complaining that although my mic picks up my voice clearly, there is a good amount of background white noise.

Now I have a (quiet) ceiling fan, and a computer fan, so I think that is simply a matter of turning the sensitivity down a bit.

However, there is no option that I can find to do this. I need some kind of advanced control UI software (like my Razer mouse and keyboard have, for instance) that will allow me to set this fairly basic setting.

Any advice on how to reduce this background noise (turning off the fans is not an option), setting mic sensitivity or otherwise getting a control panel for the headset would be greatly appreciated.

I am running windows 7 on a fairly modern machine, and more computer specs are available upon request.

Thank you in advance!

Control panel -> Sound -> Recording devices -> go to the properties of your mic -> lower the "microphone boost".

That'll also make your voice less audible, but hopefully you can speak a bit louder and raise volumes to compensate.

Also, you can try some of the realtek enhancements there to reduce noise.

You can adjust the microphone boost in either the control panel under sound ---> recording devices, or you can do it in skype (which I'm assuming you are using) under tools.
The only way to attack structure is with chaos.

Microphone boost will make me quieter in general, certinally, but what about reducing its sensitivity to not pick up ambient sounds so easily?

Is this not practical? I don't want people not be able to hear me, and my voice is not too loud, its just picking up too much background crap.

White noise may be because of a bad soundcard/cables too.

Have you installed the drivers from the product page on their website? I had a lot of background noise with mine before I did, and had to set mic volume to around 30% at all times. With the drivers installed my voice picks up clearly and there is very little background noise.
If you can chill, chill.

The only drivers that I can find on their site for the Siberia v2 is for "USB Sound". I am not using the usb, but the two headphone/mic cables, and the drivers won't install without USB plugged in.

Maybe you found something else? If so, link please.

A mic of this calliber won't cancel noise, you'll have to dish out at least 200 bucks for that.

Some programs that are cooler than skype have a recording threshold, or PUSH TO TALK. Hopefully skype will include those in later versions.

I don't require or expect noise-cancelling software, only a way to adjust sensitivity. My previous, cheaper, headsets that I bought from Staples were inferior in many ways, but they picked up less so I didn't have this problem.

I require a solution that will ethier get it to pick up sound more intelligently, or be less sensitive in general.

Thank you for the responses so far.

What you have in the control panel is all the customization for this headset. I'm using the same one with 3.5mm jacks and +20db boost, and there isn't that much background noise. Only my keystrokes, really...from the sound of things you have it a lot worse.

Try turning on this thing:

If you still make excessive noise, there has to be an anomaly somewhere in the headset, the cables or the soundcard...

Have you tried just disabling the "automatically adjust microphone volume" option in Skype? I think if you have this checked, the microphone settings will adjust to pull in what sounds it thinks it should be broadcasting (nearby fans, white noise). By disabling this, I think you maybe just be able to just allow your microphone to pick up your voice instead of the extra noise around you.

Good luck~

I guess it's based on the soundcard what you can modify. I thought all the mobo-integrated ones are the same shit, lol.

What's the model of your motherboard? Usually the manufacturer offers some realtek drivers for the integrated soundcard. In my case installing the drivers didn't enable any extra options, for you they might...? Grasping at straws at this point

I'm afraid I do not recall my motherboard model or other information regarding it.

I built this computer about a year ago, from a package deal on newegg. I don't have the boxes anymore.

Aside from digging around inside my box (inconvenient but doable), how do I find out info regarding my motherboard?

Restart and check the information on the cool graphics / text that comes up while your system is initializing. (try using PAUSE button if it goes too fast) Or go to your BIOS, it should be there. Might also be something printed on the actual hardware, if you open your case and check.

Hi StarMoon,

I would recommend testing the headset on another computer and making sure that the settings aren't causing it. (Thank you everybody that has offered their help so far).

If you still notice a considerable amount of static, please create a support ticket at the SteelSeries Support site: http://steelseries.com/support and we can help swap the headset so you can get back to 6 pooling, 4 gating, or 3 raxing.

Bumping this, because I've got the same headset, and problem might be related.

I have a problem where the headset "crashes". What happens is that sound cuts out, you hear a constant buzzing noise that is proportional in volume to what you set your headset to (and it differs depending on where the sound cut out... I think it's just the last frequency your headset outputted before it crashed) and from that point on you hear no other sounds besides the buzzing and when you speak through the mic, other people can't hear you. This also happens sporadically: Usually it doesn't happen at all for a few days, but once it happens, I can disconnect and reconnect the USB plug to get it to work again, however, it will "crash" again usually within a minute. I haven't yet figured out a way to consistently get it to work again permanently.

I've tried fiddling with the settings in this thread, but nothing works. Also tried reinstalling drivers, and making sure everything is connected properly (not just loosely).

Does anyone have any idea what could cause that?
