Hey TL community whats up? You guys were really helpful when I built my computer as to what parts to get so I thought I'd ask you guys for some help once again. I use my vizio TV as my computer monitor via HDMI and a while ago I tried to plug headphones into my custom desktop via the headphone jack on the top but it wouldn't work. I'm assuming that's because the sound is coming out of the TV.
Anyways the question I have now is that I want to get a microphone so I can talk on skype while I play, but I was wondering how this would work since I'm using a TV and I had the problem with headphones which I assume is also going to be a similar problem with the mic. Link to my computer case below, and IDK if I just don't have something plugged in correctly inside my computer case or if it is indeed because I'm using a TV as a monitor. Any help is appreciated, thanks guys!

Oh also what's a good headset/mic to get that's relatively cheap. Not looking for anything super high quality, but pretty decent for gaming.

Word in town is that the corsair hs1a is the best bang for buck you can get at sub-100 price range for a gaming headset.

Make sure those jacks are well connected and none of them faulty. Try using the ones in the back. My case came with a faulty 3.5mm jack in the front.

Did you plug both in front and behind audio jacks at the same time? I don't think this will work and you might try going to the sounds option in sc2 and explicitly select the output device that you want to audio to be output from.
If you purchase a microphone, chances are you would have to plug in either the front or back panel microphone jack only. Hope this helps.

oh wow so if you dont have a sound card its better to get usb headphones? does it really make a difference?

For me when i want to change between sound over hdmi and headphones i go into control panel then open sound. There under playback you will have the devices that are able to output sound, you should have a green tick next to a tv screen and it should be called something like HD audio HDMI out. To change to headphones there should be another option called speakers, right click on that and click enable. Now you should be getting sound out of headphones instead of speakers.
Hope this helps.

Thanks guys I will definitely try all of those things, especially John's! Lol though yes I have a sound card and get sound from my TV, just wasn't sure how to get sound out of my headphones.

John's should work for you, that's how I do it.
As for a cheap gaming headset, if you wanted to avoid pushing that close to the hundred bucks range, this Plantronics set is decent.

Yep I can confirm what JingleHell posted. Been using that Plantronics headset for a while, they are comforatble and have good sound quality for their price range and the mic folds into the headset when not in use which is nice.

Best sound/build quality you'll get from a $30 headset. Hands down, no competition.

I have a USB headset, but SC2 doesn't like it. The brand is jWIN, so maybe it's just cheap crap.
It'll work fine for a while, then all of a sudden I'll lose all sound in SC2. I have to alt-tab, unplug my headphones, plug them back in, toggle the playback device on/off in the control panel, and then alt-tab back to SC2.
The headset works fine with other games. And the mic keeps working even when the sound goes out in SC2.
Just my experience. Like I said, the fault is most likely with the cheap headset I bought. But I plan to avoid USB headsets in the future.

All you have to do is right click the volume control in the taskbar(assuming you are on windows 7) and change your playback and recording devices to your headset and mic. Its really simple.
