No warning, no crash log, no event in the reliability monitor, no obvious sign of doing something to shut it off. It seems to mostly happen overnight when I am not using it or when the computer is idle (can't remember it happening while playing a game). I can confirm it isnt a windows update or anything though because it just happened when I was writing something and I had paused to think of what to type next. Is there any way to figure out what is happening? You see nothing in event viewer?

Just checked again, I had only checked the reliability monitor which apparently doesn't update all the time. It now shows a "Windows was not properly shut down" error. Looking at the event viewer I see "Crash dump initialization failed!" for something called volmgr as the shutdown happened (or shortly after it happened). I also apparently get this error every 8 minutes "Unable to collect System Pagefile performance data. The first four bytes (DWORD) of the Data section contains the status code." from PerfOS

So I'm still using a basic phone since it's only like 10 bucks for unlimited talk and text, and I'm usually carrying a laptop around on campus so I've never really considered getting a smartphone. But I've recently got into mobile app development, and I could really use one. I figure buying an unlocked phone while still using my basic phone may be the best option. I can also change it to my permanent phone in the future if I choose to do so. Anyway, will I still be able to use the unlocked Nexus 5 as if it were under a carrier, just without the calling/texting/data plan usage?

The Windows kernel can't create a record of the BSOD without the page file. Here's how to first create the page file, and second how to make sure the BSOD gets recorded: Page file settings: http://i.imgur.com/KIryBrY.png (at the top you select the drive it's on, you can manually create something very small, at least 16MB, or let the system take care of it which will be an 8GB file or something) Do this to get a record to investigate the BSOD: http://i.imgur.com/pZn2nHd.png Those settings look very similar on Windows 7 and 8. After you get a BSOD, a program to investigate is called "BlueScreenView": http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html BlueScreenView will highlight the kernel modules that were active when the BSOD happened. Those can be drivers if you are lucky. Type the file names into a web search to get a hint on what it's about.

You got your Norton's, Mcafee's, Kaspersky, etc. What's really worth my dollar to keep my PC safe?

I've been running AVG (free) + Microsoft Security Essentials (free) + Windows Firewall (free) + the occasional Malwarebytes scan (free) for the last 6+ years and haven't had any problems. Aside from Malwarebytes, I'm probably not even using "the best" stuff out there. Works just fine.

as z0rz mentioned, not doing stupid things is the best defense tool you can get. Almost any of the free antivirus programs is fine - for the paid ones, I personally use Eset NOD32 for years. It's quite light on resources, blocks dangerous content on sites before I even know there were there, scans quickly and is just doing it's job without constantly being on my face like many other anti-viruses. If you want to pay for it, you can try it, I believe there's a trial version available.

I was updating so that I can use the 8.1 system image my friend gave to wipe my comp since it has been running like shit even after several av and malware scans, checking windows for errors and then refreshing. Is this just a stupid way of trying to fix this

What this means concretely is, you do a web search for those generic 8.1 keys everyone uses to install 8.1. It will install fine using those, but it will not activate. After installation is done and you are inside Windows, you type "change product key" on the Start screen. The search results will lead you to a screen that has a button to change the key. You type in your current Windows 8 key and Windows 8.1 will accept it and activate.
