I have used DPC latency checker and 70 % of the time I have sound delay that goes off the charts of the program (36000 microseconds I think was the number) - I have tried disabling and enabling everything in the device manager to no avail. In lack of better ideas I checked CoreTemp and found out my cores run @ 85-90 c. Could this be the reason? I cannot narrow it down to any specific software changes and system recovery did nothing. Problem occurs when doing anything really. Not just system demanding processes. Taking any ideas on what to do, thanks.

Oh, and if you overclocked your CPU at all, go back to stock settings.

Apparently this is because my hard disk drive died but after turning off and restarting my computer twice with the same result, my internal HDD magically reappeared in the boot options and it was able to start up properly. I'm going to back up the important stuff on my computer now just in case but I'm quite worried... what should I do if this comes up again and it doesn't fix itself? Should I look into replacing some hardware or will this problem just go away? I can provide my computer specs if needed, but I'm almost illiterate when it comes to tech :S Thanks in advance! Back-up everything important. When that is done, you can try to download HD Sentinel and check with it how the HDD health is looking - probably a bit grim. But with that you will know more about the issue.

Even if you discover some uncorrectable errors on the drive, it's almost impossible to say how much time it has left. I have a clicking hard drive that has actually survived over a year now with a high "Current Pending Sector Count." I just don't keep any important data on it because it can go at any moment. You should treat hard drive problems as worst case scenario and do whatever you can to limit your potential losses.

I am planning on getting a laptop and originally I wanted an i7 haswell, but it is a bit more than I want to spend at the moment. Mostly it is going to be used for school work (programming will probably be the most heavily used aspect) but I wouldnt mind being able to play some SC2/D3. Would this handle casual play? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231198

For most games there won't be any noticeable difference between an i5 and an i7 quad, and the ones that do have extremely demanding GPU needs anyway.

For most games there won't be any noticeable difference between an i5 and an i7 quad, and the ones that do have extremely demanding GPU needs anyway. I know that games rely on GPU's (I am not an idiot), but I also know that 768 low settings is not graphically demanding. I have a desktop for real games, SC2/D3 are just quick games that I could maybe play sometimes on the road which is why I asked about those 2 in particular. Also, I havent done much programming yet... how much of an impact will it have on compiling stuff for later years in college (i5 vs i7 quad)? Are there ever projects that would really make the i7 quad have a meaningful impact on productivity? EDIT: Thanks so far though. It looks like (so far) that one will work fine for what I need it for.

I mean, either way that's way too hot, but if you're at 90C idle then you really need to stop using your computer immediately and check your CPU heatsink and make sure everything is in order (make sure you have adequate thermal paste on CPU, make sure heatsink is properly secured to CPU, make sure the fans are working, clean out any dust, etc). Oh, and if you overclocked your CPU at all, go back to stock settings. More or less idle. Ty will try this. Will a can of compressed air be a good way to clean it?

As previously mentioned, just dusting off the CPU and cooler may not be enough. I would consider buying thermal paste and applying it (of course that means taking off the previous layer and cleaning the cpu) - it's not expensive and may be the thing that will "fix" the overheating problem. Of course this could also be fan failing, you need to check on that.

When you start working/interning at companies, chances are performance will matter to some degree (i doubt you'll be compiling large amounts of proprietary code on your laptop though). Keep in mind that compiling programs from an ssd (vs a slow as shit 5400rpm laptop drive) will could make a much larger difference than dual -> quad anyway, not that it matters. Ah, didnt realize that the HDD mattered for compiling speeds. Thanks ![]() Looks like the i5 will work fine for me then.
