Router not compatible with network adapter?

Is it possible to have a router that WILL NOT send a signal to a PCI Network Adapter?

My internet kept going down all the time, however, none of the computers SAID the internet had gone down. It just stopped working. I did the typical google search, and thought that it would have been the router just crapping out on me (1 and a half year old Linksys wireless router).

I have just purchased a TrendNet TEW-651BR (N)... But it apparently doesn't want to connect to my Linksys Network Adapter (G). I thought tthat N and G were just different types of things, but were still able to be read/sent to each other.

I dont know why my internet keeps going down, but it seems that I am STILL having this isssue on all computers, which leads me to believe that it is in fact not the router. However, I am now concerned about the router, and my wireless adapter. I kinda like to have my PC operational, since it IS the thing that allows me to play StarCraft.

If anyone can offer ANY help to solve my crisis, I would be greatly appreciative.

Wireless n is backwards compatible with wireless g, but it has to transmit a g signal instead of it's default n signal. If you haven't gone in to your routers configuration and enabled it to allowed transmission between devices using previous 802.11 standards (g and/or b) then your laptop's wireless card won't pick up the signal. Any other device that would normally use n with your n router will have to resort to g (slower speeds, shorter range) as well though, unless your router has the capability to transmit both simultaneously. If you have devices that are using the n signal when your g network card tries to connect it might crap out your router.

tl;dr wireless N > wireless B, and although they are sometimes compatible, they don't always work well together.

I'm having a hard enough time connecting to anything. Only way I can even get on here is cause of my iPhone. I set up the router, it worked for a bit, and now has the same issue as the other. Won't connect worth crap. This is very very frustrating!

I'm gonna go back to tiger direct tomorrow or the day after and exchange this piece of shit, dunno what for, since they're all gonna be garbage like this. Like I said, I have no idea what to do. All my computers use g, (laptops are either) so I'm sure I was mistaken in getting this.

Again, if anyone has a solution for why my Internet started going wonky in the first place, I would love you forever

edit: I got it working on my laptop (hopefully it doesn;t crap out since I always jynx it), however, even after setting the router to ONLY have an output of b/g, my computer does not link to it.

edit (cont) : When the "TRENDnet" network is selected to be connected to, it takes FOREVER (ok, like 5 minutes) to Identify it. But when it finally does, it is listed as "Unidentified network" and says it has no internet access (Which I know it does, because I'm typing right now, on my laptop)

edit: just an addition, in the taskbar, where it shows the internet strength, it keeps showing that blue spinning circle, as if it is refreshing the networks, but nothing happens

I had the exact same thing when setting up my family's wifi on my laptop. It turned out I needed to power cycle the router after unplugging it for 20~30 seconds.

There's not a whole lot else too it really.
Requirements for connection:
i) router and network card communicate using a wifi standard both are compatible with
ii) no MAC address restrictions or anything else on the router to prevent the connection
ii) wireless device is in range of the network with proper authentication.

-> wireless device obtains an address via DHCP if not set staticly and you should have connectivity.

Power Cycling just means plugging and unplugging, right? I've done that.

I'm gonna give my mom a chance to get the wired computer a clean bill of health (I switched because her wired and work computer were crapping out with the old router). I do not know if I have anything in the way of MAC address restrictions. I have those as the default settings (which I thought was open)

And if my mom gives this new router a clean bill, I'll have to go get the $40 PCI Adapter (N) for my PC when I get paid on Thursday.

In addition: Even just posting this, though, my connection lagged huge. I watch a stream, every minute or so, there's a MASSIVE lag spike. What can I do to stop this lag, and have the ability to ACTUALLY watch streams!

Just curious what OS you're using. I've had that same problem with a wireless PCI adapter before on a Vista computer I had.... once I switched to Windows 7 it never happened again. Perhaps Vista has some setting that's causing this to happen. If you do have Vista, that could be it as you said it works fine on your iPhone.

oh, then i have no idea then. Unless you upgraded your Vista install from windows 7, which I still had the same problem when I did that. I had to do a fresh install to fix it.

Otherwise I have no idea <_<

Try another adapter/router or go to their site and troubleshoot. Trial and error basically.
