Not sure if this is the right place. What mouse pads are best for SC2, hard or soft, whats the differences between them?

I'm in Australia, so probably a slighty worse selection, but are razer mouse pads decent?

About hard vs. soft/cloth, I think this is completely your own choice. It really only depends on what you like better.

It depends on the sensor and mouse too. Some perform best on certain types and even colors of pads

I need a new mouse for Brood War and SC2.

What I am looking for is a small light mouse suitable for a claw / fingertip grip, a precise sensor (no acceleration or prediction), and very easy to click main buttons. It needs to have a DPI setting in the 400-500 range for Brood War and something that works well for SC2 - currently I use the 1800 DPI step on the Abyssus with 32 % sensitivity in the game.

I don´t need advanced features or anything beyond two buttons and a scroll wheel and if it´s cheap that is a plus. But like I said it has to have a good sensor.

I had a CM Storm Xornet 1, it was great for Brood War but it died a couple weeks ago. Currently I´m using an old Microsoft mouse for Brood War and a Razer Abyssus for SC2. The Microsoft doesn´t track very well, and with regards to the Abyssus, well I don´t like the button action because

a) They are harder to depress than those on the Xornet, and

b) There´s something about their shape, how they are shaped like a hole and angled upwards toward the front of the mouse, that I don´t care for. (Well technically they aren´t angled upwards, but the angle is closer to horizontal than my other mice.)

I thought about getting the Xornet 2 which is out just now, but apparently it has some issues still, and my go to store doesn´t have them yet.

So I´m looking into what alternatives are out there.

To sum up, a small, light weight mouse with a Very Light button action and a good sensor. Those are the features I want!

The G302 might suit you, but the shape is pretty far from the Xornet. Be careful about that. The new zowies will have omron switches too, so you might want to take a look at the smallest shells they make (ZA series if I recall correctly). They won't have the same shape as the Xornet either, but they should suit you well (simple shape, great sensor, soft switches, easy 400/800/1600/3200 dpi switch under the mouse).

The g302 seems kind of big, I don´t get the impression of it being a very nimble, super controllable mouse. What´s your impression of it? What do you consider to be it´s best and worst qualities? Oh, and the buttons, are they on the stiff side? I remember not getting a G100s because it was supposed to have hard to press buttons. And this was the problem with Zowies as well IIRC.

The Roccat Lua is supposed to have the same sensor as the first generation Xornet. It performed well, but died after a little over a year. Also I´m a little concerned about the shape of the buttons, that sharp angle towards the front... Depends on where the tip of my fingers end up i guess, it might be no problem at all. Is it your main mouse FLORIDACOMPACT? How are the buttons? How do you rate the mouse in general?

Oh man... Mouse research... 150 page mouse discussion threads where everyone are of a different opinion;)

Any other suggestions out there before I order a Lua or a Xornet 2 (which became available in "my store" yesterday)?

Oh, and the buttons, are they on the stiff side?


g302/g303 is one of the only mouse shells to have buttons better than xornet - they're fairly light and with not much travel distance. It's about as much force as you need to not click accidentally but the tiny travel distance after it starts to click makes it feel responsive and easy to click multiple times with quickly. It has buttons that are detached from the rest of the shell like the Xornet, which generally improves the feel in my experience.

The shell and weight is medium sized - it's not particularly small and is fairly dense (~87-90g). Shape is highly debatable with the transparant plasticky stuff at the back being considered a universally bad thing that they did so they could put LED's behind it and make it look fancy. That area of the mouse is ungrippable by thumb (as it'll slide around, wet or dry) which leads to a lot of the anger towards mouse shape. I keep thumb just barely past that or on the border of that part usually.

Xornet has two firmwares with substantially different (12ms?) click latency. The one without the latency doubleclicks often enough to be unusable on the xornet that i have, so i had to take that delay which was both perceptible and showed up on reaction time tests with a decent sample size. g302/g303 has comparable click latency to the fast xornet firmware (basically as fast as you get) without doubleclick issue.

For what it's worth the new zowies (the ones with the red logo) will have omron switches too, so you should be fine with them. Now idea when they'll be available though.

I heard FK with Omron will still be stiffer because of the shell

Yeah I guess it'll still be stiffer than the G30x and CM storm/xornet, but it should be soft enough to not be an issue. My EC2-A's are pretty soft already despite still being huanos or whatever. I admit than the FK1 I had before had really stiff clicks, but I *think* they changed the shell to help with that some time ago, not sure though.

Thanks for the comments and ideas, keep them coming.

I have been doing some more reading and watching of mouse reviews. The last time I was in the market for a mouse I had to buy three before I got it right, hopefully I will be getting it right on the first try now!

There are G302s in a store I know I will get to try it hands on, I will head down there when I get the time. If I don´t like it I´ll probably get the Xornet, if no other candidates comes around. Hopefully those issues that some people have won´t affect me.

Blurry and low res pic from one angle so i can't tell. It could be a 302/303 with lighting disabled but could probably be a lot of different mice too - that general shape is popular

Anyway to disable the lighting on my Zowie besides disconnecting it when I turn off the computer? It lights up whenever I move it just a bit, like touching the cord.

Go into the BIOS menus of the motherboard and search for a screen that has power saving stuff on it. There might be a setting there that's about supplying power to USB devices when powered off.

If when you said "turn off the computer", you are actually talking about putting the PC in standby instead of shutting down, then go into the Windows Device Manager and look for the mouse device. Open its Properties window and go to the power savings tab and look for interesting check boxes there that might help you.

Did you try the G302/G303 shape? To me, it feels like a mix between Logitech Mini shape (which was the inspiration for the Mico shape) and the Abyssus shape.
