For example I've heard that sometimes Battlefield 3 takes up a gig and a half or more. Vram is different than your system RAM. a 2gb version will give you absolutely no performance difference (not slight, or 1%, 0%, absolutely nothing). edit: unless you run out of vram, which won't happen unless you have an absurdly high resolution (higher than 1080p)
I mean 1.5 gigs of active vram use, forgot where I read that... think it was some thread in an OC forum. But I suppose if it has no effect until 2560xwhatever, then there is no point in it for me o.o

Hmm. You made me curious, so I looked into it. Benchmarks on high settings for BF3 (this is all 1920x1080) show no benefit for more than 1GB of RAM. However, benchmarks on ultra settings show a major benefit for 2GB over 1GB of RAM, apparently especially when playing multiplayer on heavily populated servers (50+).
However, a single 560 Ti isn't going to get you much more than 30 frames per second playing Ultra, even with 2GB. So you'd probably get a much better experience with high settings anyway, where you get no benefit from 2gb of ram.
So I see your point. But then, at that price you could get a 2gb 6950 or a 560Ti 448 (only 1.2gb).
|
Looks like I was a little wrong, you're right. On large maps with a large amount of players, you might run out of 1gb of vram on ultra, but like MisterFred said, you wont be maxing out ultra on a 560ti anyway.
If you're already OK on spending 30 extra for the 2gb 560ti.. spend ANOTHER 30 and just get a better card that has 2gb anyway.

Hmm 2gb 6950 outperforms 2gb 560ti? The 560ti and the 6950 on the Anandtech benchmarks seem to show more or less even, with the 560 winning slightly in SC2.
Also, streaming is basically CPU dependent right, so it wouldn't matter at all which GPU for that?
|
Yes, streaming is CPU dependent. As for SC2, if there's any difference it's probably just variance in testing. You won't notice the difference.
Generally the 6950 slightly outperforms the 560Ti (remember VRAM is only a check of do I have enough, if you do, you'll get identical results). The 6950 also comes in 1gb and 2gb versions. However, Nvidia graphics cards usually are a bit better if you like to turn up AA because they handle that better than AMD for some reason. Then again, playing on small screens you probably won't use much AA. And of course, both have some games they do better than the other on. Shogun 2: Total War, for instance, generally does better with AMD cards.
|
hmm.. sounds like 1gb should be more than enough for sc2 then.
Yay for slightly lowered price. I'm probably going to get a replacement gpu in a year or two anyways by the time I need a better one ~~
Actually, is there any chance of running past 1gb on some of the more ridiculously huge customs in sc2?
|
No. Running out of 1gb is really really rare. Or at least I didn't know any game did it at 1920x1080 resolution until today . Keep in mind that BF3 is relatively new and one of the most graphically demanding games out there. SC2 just doesn't take GPU power to run.
|
Cool Cool 1gb it is then, I don't exactly play very demanding games lol.

Hi can someone help me build a good $400 PC. I play WC3 Dota, some football(soccer) manager games and few other newer games, but I don't mind playing them on low or medium.
I don't particularly need a graphic card as I'll probably but one standalone few months later.
|
Damn there just are no 17" 1080p desktop monitors. I can notice the difference between 1080p and 1680x1050 at 17" when focusing on my laptop... Which I would like to do the same on a standalone monitor tt

Hmm. Missed it on the first pass, but I wouldn't get the rosewill stallion without confirmation from someone who knows better than me. It looks like a suspicious power supply. Rosewill buys from multiple manufacturers, so just because it has a few good product lines, doesn't mean its other power supplies will be any good.
|
Yeah dont get the Stallion. You are better off with a Corsair CX430WV2.
You can also drop down to 1333 mhz memory and save a few dollars.
Or not. Its whatever.

VRAM is the shit. Sapphire are releasing 6gb version of 7970. Fuck yeah.

Pfft. If they were really hardcore they'd come out with a 12GB version.

Indeed you don't want that power supply, but "65% efficiency" is not really accurate. I'm pretty sure it's just that one of the ATX revisions either recommends or requires that level of efficiency or higher, so it's just saying that the unit is compliant with that.
Rosewill Green Series 530W is $50 too, probably the best thing available currently around that price. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182199
CX500 V2 is also okay, and the Seasonic S12II and XFX equivalent (the one linked only with one PCI Express power connector) are a little better but more expensive.

What is your budget? $800-$1200
What is your resolution? 1920x1080
What are you using it for? Mostly gaming and browsing the web! Streaming, SC2, Diablo 3, Dota2, Skyrim. What is your upgrade cycle? Around 2 years or so! When do you plan on building it? 3-4 weeks from now. Do you plan on overclocking? Honestly, I don't know. I want too but I don't know too much about it!
Do you need an Operating System? Yes I do!
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? If it is necessary, yes!
Where are you buying your parts from? Most likely NewEgg and Fry's if somethings are cheaper there! $1056 before mail in rebates, shipping, and other fees: Overclockable but not SLI capable (SLI is not necessary for 1080p unless you want to max every single game on market. Since your primary concerns are Starcraft II, Diablo 3, and Dota 2 - doing SLI would be a waste of money). Don't get barebone kits from Newegg, they're all generally terrible.
