MS Windows XP Professional 32-bit SP3 CPU Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @ 2.83GHz Yorkfield 45nm Technology RAM 4,00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 656MHz (9-9-9-24) Motherboard ASUSTeK Computer INC. P5Q3 DELUXE (LGA 775) Graphics SyncMaster (1680x1050@60Hz) 1024MB GeForce GTX 280 (ASUStek Computer Inc) Hard Drives 488GB Western Digital WDC WD5000AAKS-00A7B0 (SATA) 488GB Hitachi Hitachi HDP725050GLA360 (SATA) Optical Drives ASUS DRW-2014L1 SCSI CdRom Device i need to point out i didnt assemble this rig, nor did i know much about computers in 2008 that i had it made for a huge chunk of money (back then these parts were expensive :/) i am wondering if this is a good point to upgrade. i am not looking into full new setup, just change some parts. primarily, i am worried about the GPU. it tends to overheat a bit and although it plays everything the fps i get sometimes reduce alot. is this a good point to upgrade or should i w8 a bit? also no matter what, when i monitor it with GPU-z max memory used is 35% even after opening 3 different games for hours. secondly, i desperately need a new OS and i was thinking of also buying an SSD to go with it. i have zero experience with SSD's, but i guess installing a os on it and getting my pc to boot with the ssd would be fine. if i add a SSD will i be able to just leave my current Hdd's as is, or will it be difficult to access them through win7 on the ssd? (have a lot of files on them). also i will look aorund aswell, but which programs do u usually install on SSD's? the CPU is a bit outdated but i can overclock it to 3.7-3.9 just fine, although it becomes a bit noisy, since i cannot use the onboard control (Asus Sixengine. awesome software for me) i am only looking for advice and pointers. i repeat i have only recently become an enthusiast about PC's, so feel free to use terms but i am not familiar with complex procedures. This pc has been my baby for 3 years and some months, although in the beginning it had some problems. it is still trustworthy and loyal just needs some fresh air. finally, i have a 750W psu and a huge case so size wouldnt be a problem. also, some fans on my case are broken and i cannot find replacements (well 1 is 25cm and the other 36cm and all stores i have been to only have up to 20cm fans) but i will look into it asap so case cooling wouldnt be a problem*i have some enthusiast friends who may help em out). i would prefer upgrading the pc on my own, but if an tech savvy person is essential then i can give into the pressure. thank you all, i think what you do is awesome for the community.

I not really sure what fans blow air to what direction, but Im assuming I should go for option #1 here then, like it currently is.

The fan on the back of the case and the heatsink #2 fan next to the back fan should also both be exhaust. The fan nearest the memory modules should be your intake fan (pushing air through the heatsink).

![]() I use a Hyper 212+ and use both Option #1 and #2. If you only have 1 fan, I'd use Option #1. Both Case Fans should already be pre-set to blow in the right direction. You have to make sure the heatsink fans are, though. Usually, the side with the fan specs label (not the brand label) is the side the fan blows towards.

Unless the performance is poor in whatever you want to do, I do not think an overclocked Q9550 or GTX 280 need an upgrade yet. If you have not recently (or ever, which would explain things), you want to clean out your GTX 280 and the rest of your computer. Turn it off, unplug the GTX 280, hold the fan still, and use compressed air to blow dust out of the heatsink. That should improve temperatures. (possibly it could need new thermal paste, but likely just dust is the problem) If you want to upgrade OS, that is a good time to get an SSD yes, since you will need to reinstall programs anyway. To be sure, I would just unplug all the hard drives, plug in the SSD, install the OS on the SSD, and then plug back in the HDDs to use them. Install whichever programs you frequently use, on the SSD, particularly if they do not take up too much space. Current SSDs to look for are the Intel 320, Samsung 470, Crucial M4, and Crucial C300. Pick whichever is cheapest of those, with a capacity large enough for you. At the moment, with firmware issues resolved, these are all some of the more reliable options, and they are all fast enough for home use.

If all he wants to do is display his console games and streams, he's going to want a CPU-heavy-ended rig, and a cheap graphics card. The graphics card isnt' going to be producing the images, his console will. All it needs to do is display at the proper resolution he wants. I would also advise you get another monitor and use a Y-splitter. Using your computer as a passthrough is going to cause some delay on your screen while playing.

If all you're going to be doing until Diablo 3 comes out is playing on your console and streaming/recording it, then yes, you can wait. I believe the 2500k IGP will be good enough to display at 1080p whatever console input you're using (someone else can confirm this I guess -- I'm not sure if there will be any background graphic coding going on). And even if the IGP isn't enough, you can get like a cheap HD 5450 or 5570. IMO, you don't want an HD 5770 right now since that might not make the cut for Diablo 3. It's supposedly going to have more GPU requirements than SC2, so if you're going to buy anything that expensive right now, you might as well get something better like atleast an HD 6850, GTX 460, or HD 6870. Also make sure you got enough bandwidth to stream at whatever resolution you want.
