These are some of the specs: (SLI) 2 x GeForce GTX 570 TwinFroozer III Power Edition (MSI) Intel i7-2600K (SANDYBRIDGE -!)4 x 3.40Ghz @ 4 x 4.00 Ghz (Overclocked!) 8 GB VENGEANCE DDR3 1866 MHz Samsung 1000 GB Harddisk

thx! That sounds like alienware so I assume you're paying a 1000$ premium with those parts. Actually more like 1500$ as 8gb of 1866mhz memory costs about 700 to alienware Be fair, it could be ibuypower, who only tack on about 50% of the cost in profit, instead of Alienware. Artemis: If you want, you could give me the obscene gobs of cash you want to dump on those specs, I'll build you something better, and still pocket enough to make it worth my time. lol. are you serious?
Eh not entirely serious, I wouldn't want to do that casually over the internet, but I've built machines for good friends for a 6 pack or a bottle before, saving them easily 20-30% over a prebuilt, with better components overall.
I was mostly trying to give you an idea of exactly how much they pocket by pointing out I could build you a better rig and still pocket a tidy chunk of change.

I've always found buying new gaming rigs such a hassle =/ thx If games are ONLY starting to barely utilize four threads, what on earth makes you think that games will start barely utilizing eight threads in the next three years? Or do you plan on keeping such a configuration for ten years where games might start utilizing eight threads? And if faster memory doesn't help now, what makes you think it's going to help in the future when you'll still be using a 2600k? Well you could argue that faster memory may help with Haswell or Broadwell if you plan on upgrading than.
Hmm. Okay, so I'll be changing the i7 2600k to a i5 2500k. Any more advice? Im starting to see where you're gettin at. lol, no reason to get such hardware when no games support it... (just wanted to make sure I could run BF3 perfectly) o_o

Hehe, yeah. I wasnt sure if you actually meant it or not. =P

So christmas is coming and I will be getting some extra money to potentially use for building a new rig since my other one is too old to be upgraded.
I don't want to spend over $1k, preferably down to the $700-800 range if possible. I don't want a state of the art machine that will run the newest version of Crysis on a 40" LCD at max fps.
Anyway, here is what I have to help:
-Resolution: 1600x900 -Will be used mostly for gaming. Lets just say that I cannot think of anything else I would be doing that would influence parts chosen.
-I won't upgrade often. I don't care about having the latest CPU or GPU on the market, as long as it has potential to upgrade to something a little better if needed down the line.
-Will be building shortly after Christmas probably.
-No overclocking
-Will be needing a new copy of Windows 7 to go along with it.
-Will not be using SLI/Crossfire.
-Parts would either be bought from Newegg or Frys(there is one like an hour away but I've never been there). Another option could opssibly be a website like Cyberpowerpc(I got my last computer from there) if they have available configurations for good prices. I haven't checked and don't know anything about the latest parts out.
The games I would be playing on this machine are:
WoW, Starcraft 2, Civilization 5, Left 4 Dead, etc. I don't require that every game I play be able to run on Ultra settings with max FPS. Being able to run on medium-high at a playable frame rate would be nice though.

Come back near christmas. Prices will change a lot, especially with boxing day sales.

I like a wide range of music. Rock, rap, dubstep, dance, pop, post rock, and really just about anything. I definitely need good bass for the music I listen to.

You're sure you need 7.1, when you don't know what good 7.1 equipment is? You'll excuse me while I giggle. Most people who need better than onboard sound usually know what they're going to be using it with. Onboard sound is no longer bad.
You can save serious money in computers by knowing what you'll actually use.

1700 bucks holy crap. That is one irresponsibly overpriced computer. Time to break out the quadfire 6950 setups with that budget.

Nah, 3way 570s for a grand, 750 for the rest. Totally doable with the right case, board, and cards.
Just won't get them cranked as high as you would on plumbing.
|
7.1 headset? For binaural listening, software surround generally works better anyway, and you won't be tied to overpriced gaming gear when listening to music. For music of those genres + gaming, just get like a Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80 and Asus Xonar DG ($180 + $25). And a desk mic or clip-on of whatever quality is necessary for whatever you're doing.
Other closed headphones tend to be of lower quality, less comfortable, less isolating, or lighter on bass. You're going to want closed headphones to get sound isolation from a jet engine multi-GPU setup inside your case. As for prices, come back when you're buying.
edit: bolded "or" above used to be an "and" as a mistake. I mean or. Also some Denons may be very good, but they have less isolation. Audio-Technica Axxx has less bass and less isolation, though they may be better in other ways.

Hey a quick question. I am putting together my computer right now with the coolmaster elite 370 and there is a green/white wire coming from the place where the rest switch, power switch etc are coming from.
It looks like kinda like a molex cable but 2 pins are like missing. Does the go anywhere?
Edit: sorry its hard to explain what I am talking about when I don't know all the names of stuff.

look at your case documentation... it is probably the hard drive LED Also look at your mobo documentation to see where it goes...

No, looking at pictures, it's a molex header designed for something small, like front panel LEDs or some silly small shit.
Just goes to a molex.

I think I've seen such a connection for a front panel fan controller. Not sure if I remember correctly though.

Either way one can just find the nearest thing it rams into just fine and jam it in.

Bingo. I think there's what, a grand total of 2-3 things that are possible to mistakenly put in the wrong place, and they still need excessive force.

ok, the documentation is noo fun so jamming it is.

Unless we count legacy boards from back when AGP was making its rounds, what are they even?
Well lemme guess. Umm, i guess if you were really convinced one could jam a jumper into some bad places. Like bridging 3 connections.
Thats the best I got, unless someone really gets zealous with PCI(e) slots.

Thats the spirit. Finding what hole the square peg fits into is the hallmark of computer building.
