The PC I built is now up and running, all drivers installed, and updated windows and all that good stuff. I plan on OCing it tomorrow, I just want a 4.4 ghz 24/7 OCed machine so it shouldn't be that hard. Thanks again fellas!

What is your resolution? 1920x1080 What are you using it for? This computer is going to be both my working station and gaming station. And by working, I mean heavy photography work. First priority : The likes of Photoshop and Lightroom have to run very smoothly. That is my absolute, no-compromise priority. I rely on that to earn part of my food. Second priority : gaming at high / ultra settings. Third priority : Streaming (starcraft 2 for certain. Maybe photoshop, but not important anymore). What is your upgrade cycle? This one is going to be a bit funky. Due to sudden change of plans, I am going to leave the country (along with the computer) in autumn 2012, for 6 months . That means i'm probably looking for a sweet-spot build centered around the i5 2500k and upgrade some pieces in the year following my return. Does that sound like a good idea? When do you plan on building it? ASAP. I am torn between ordering the parts before august 31 (seems like alot of awesome discounts end that day), or will september make them drop even further? Do you plan on overclocking? Yes. Nothing too crazy, but yes. Might as well get the most out of this sweetspot build. Do you need an Operating System? No, that's about the only thing I have already. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? No. Where are you buying your parts from? Probably NCIX since it seems to widely used in canada. I don't really mind. All I want is the lowest price for the parts I pick (I hear NCIX has price matching policy). IMPORTANT EXTRA INFORMATION : This is a COMPLETE build. and by complete I mean I will need BOTH a new case and a new monitor (planning to add a second monitor in the future). The case doesn't have to be a super flashy gamer thing with hazard lights, wings and a jetpack. I want something solid, reliable and efficient. A side window is a plus (let's face it, it's damn nice), but not a priority at all. Thanks in advance for the help Here's a configuration that totals to $884 before mail in rebates, leaving you with roughly $500 for an IPS panel: You can replace the HAF 912 with whatever case with a side window you want. Can't think of any decent cases with side windows besides the Antec Nine Hundred, Corsair 650D, and some of the higher end Silverstone cases like the Raven or TJ series. You can get the 120gb variant SSD instead if you think you'll need more space on the boot drive for all the software. The same can be said for the HDD, you can get a Caviar Green if it's just going to be used for storage or a bigger Caviar Blue if you need it for speed as well. Both Photoshop and Lightroom use hyperthreading to some extent so you may consider a core i7 2600k instead, pricematch to $300 ( http://www.microcad.ca/products/details/Intel-Core-i7-i7-2600K-3.40-GHz-Processor-Socket-H2-LGA-1155-1018401411 ) : http://ncix.com/products/?sku=57960 and get the same MSI P67 G43 motherboard for $125: http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=59095&promoid=1367 Intel Core i5 2500k & MSI P67 G43 Bundle @ $325 ($300 after mail in rebate) http://ncix.com/products/?sku=60177&promoid=1367 Gigabyte GTX 560 Ti @ $227 ($197 after mail in rebate) (pricematch with http://infonec.com/site/main.php?module=detail&id=456025 ) http://ncix.com/products/?sku=58366&promoid=1367 Coolermaster HAF 912 @ $50 (pricematch with http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=11130AC0700 ) http://ncix.com/products/?sku=55583 XFX Core Edition 450 @ $51 ($36 after mail in rebate) (pricematch with http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=16950AC3542 ) http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=63238 Mushkin 2x4GB 1333MHz @ $40 ($35 after mail in rebate) http://ncix.com/products/?sku=55544&promoid=1367 Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB @ $40 (pricematch with http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7281716 ) http://ncix.com/products/?sku=58402 Crucial M4 64GB @ $110 (pricematch with http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=11230DR4284 ) http://ncix.com/products/?sku=60444 DVD Burner @ $17 (pricematch with http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/225965/DRW-24B1ST Bulk/ASUS/ ) http://ncix.com/products/?sku=49597 Coolermaster Hyper 212+ @ $24 (pricematch with http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=1946101809P ) http://ncix.com/products/?sku=41337 On August 28 2011 11:50 Kinetik_Inferno wrote: I checked the compatibility of my parts. The mobo has PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot. The Graphics card is a PCI Express 2.1 x16 slot. Are they not compatible? Will the full power of the card not be used? 2.1 and 2.0 is backwards and forward compatible. Both are identical in terms of speed. 2.1 just contains some of the newer management / support / troubleshooting stuff that is to be implemented in PCI-E 3.0.

I love the case you recommended, with the only exeption of it having only 2 usb ports, do you have one in mind that has more ports? How many devices do you plan to plug into the front? The rest of your USB ports will be either on the mobo, or expansion cards connected to extra mobo headers. The ones listed for the case are just the ones on the front panel.

What is your budget? My budget is $1200 max(including a monitor). I would love to go cheaper than that though if possible. What is your resolution? 1920 x 1080 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236117 I am looking at this monitor right now. What are you using it for? Gaming mainly. I would like to run basically any game at max settings without a problem. Don't know if that's possible with my budget though. What is your upgrade cycle? I hope to not be upgrading for a very long time. When do you plan on building it? September Do you plan on overclocking? No. Do you need an operating system? Yes. Windows 7 obviously. Do you plan to add a second gpu? No. I am hoping to just get a single gpu and the cheapest one possible that will still perform very well. Where are you buying your parts from? I am hoping to buy my parts from newegg.com but if there are better deals elsewhere, that's where I'll go. Other info: Case appearance doesn't matter to me at all. I want the best parts for best price obviously. Like I said earlier, I want to be able to run games smoothly at max settings. I appreciate any help with this immensely.

Digital camera or mp3 players are the main things people tend to need them for. I've used all 8 of my back panel ones and am being really stressed for more. Does anyone have any recommendations for extra ports or do all of them work the same?

A cheaper monitor with decent enough color accuracy, viewing angles, and gaming performance (well, response time, potential RTC errors, input lag) would be the eIPS Dell Ultrasharp U2311H. It's about $250. There are other options too. Some of the more expensive IPS and especially PVA panels may actually be a little bit distractingly slow for gaming, but there are definitely other alternatives that should be okay. edit: ah yeah U2412M is fine for gaming as well, and is that nice 1920x1200. http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2412m.htm

Antec One Hundred should be similarly priced and it comes with 4 USB 2.0 ports, if you want more front panel ports. About the monitor, I wouldn't any get one of those cheapass Asus or LG monitors from Newegg because they're all not fantastic and returning bad IPS panels to Newegg is probably a major pain. I think the best work monitor out right now is the Dell U2412M for $400. It uses 6 bit + A-FRC but Dell's application of this is good enough that you shouldn't notice any real difference between it and a true 8 bit panel.

Wouldn't want a USB expansion card to wiggle. Curiosity... what do you have running off USB right now?

I don't think all ~8 of your USB devices are simultaneously maxing out the USB interface speeds, right? If a lot of them are low power device, you may be able to get away with a hub without its own dedicated power cord.

\/\/\/\/\/ Dunno, Australia seems to have discontinued it. Anyway you might as well get the new one just for the LED backlighting. Yeah. CCFL theoretically should provide better panel uniformity but the lower power draw and probably better contrast of LED backlighting is worth it.

I'm still living in the past and forgot they were on xxx2 now.

$900 USD What is your resolution? 1600x900 What are you using it for? Gaming, gaming, gaming What is your upgrade cycle? 3+ years at a time. When do you plan on building it? Within 2 months. Do you plan on overclocking? Not really. I'm not educated enough on it to feel safe doing it honestly. Do you need an Operating System? Nope Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Nah, one good single card is alright for now. Unless, it's a better idea to front the money now with my upgrade cycle the way it is now. Where are you buying your parts from? USA. So newegg or equivalent Extra: Case is needed. No need for fancy lights or whatever. But I want it to look nice Thanks in advance

I have a mouse, keyboard, external dac, printer, printer, scanner, ipod charger and ipod shuffle charger. So I've run out of space to put my hefty external hard drive so it's plugged in the front. I'll also be getting a portable external hard drive in the future and maybe some other stuff. I'm very happy I got an 8 usb port motherboard. So any generic usb hub should work fine?
