T-T PS have to wait for next week for school start and ask about MSDNAA account if i would be able to get one. Just in case it's not obvious, any student should be able to get a discounted Windows 7 for about $30 through the bookstore, even if you don't qualify for the free program. Anyone with a .edu e-mail address (or a friend with one) can order a copy of windows 7 professional ("upgrade", but it's the full program) from the Windows website for a $30 download.
Wow I didn't know that. I have a .edu email but I'll finish school in a week or so.
Just to confirm, even if it says it is "upgrade", if I order the back up disc I should be able to use that to install Win7 Pro on my newly built PC?

Hey, I heard there were some wonderful people here, and I'd love your help =)
I am about to go back to college, and I am completely sick of my horrible laptop giving me 5fps when I try to play Starcraft on the lowest settings. I honestly don't know where to start, so any help would be fantastic. + Show Spoiler + What is your budget? I'd like to spend around $700, but am willing to spend ~800 if it's required for what I want.
What is your resolution? My resolution will be 1920x1080, through an HDMI cable.. if that matters
What are you using it for? I intend to be playing many a game on it (d3, starcraft 2, counterstrike GO, tf2, skyrim, dota2 etc.) If at all possible, I would like to be able to stream what I'm playing.
What is your upgrade cycle? I don't want to have to look around for a new computer/parts for at least 2 years, more if possible
When do you plan on building it? a month from now, most likely. Might be sooner because I just love what I see in this thread =)
Do you plan on overclocking? nope. Not unless it's required to stay in budget. I don't have experience with overclocking.
Do you need an Operating System? no, I will deal with that when I get there. I think I can get a cheap one from the comp store on campus.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Nope.
Where are you buying your parts from? Newegg, probably. I don't know of a place that has better prices. Maybe a cheap piece from Bestbuy because I have a giftcard. XD
I think that's all the questions. I hope the price range is feasible for what I want to do with it.
That said, I love you guys and what you do for all these people. It's like giving someone a color-within-the-lines book for building a computer.

I have a budget of around 1000$. I'm about to build a new machine but I am not in to the overclocking biz.
And I am having problems choosing a GFX
Current(possible) setup is:
MB:Asus P8P67 LE
CPU: Sandy Bridge core i3 2100(box)
RAM: Kingston HyperX Genesis 2x2 gb
HDD: WD 500GB at 7200rpm with 16mb cash
PSU: 500w CoolerMaster along with a case
I have few options to choose from:
Asus GTS 450 1GB gddr5 price ~120Euro
Asus GTX 550 Ti 1GB gddr5 ~ 145Euro
Asus GTX 560 DC/2di 1GB gddr5 ~ 155 Euro
With the aforementioned parts which gfx i should go for?
Bear in mind that All major pc parts sites don't ship to Macedonia which is a bummer and I have pretty limited offer to choose from.
I'm making this for 1440x900 resolution.
Thanks in advance
P.S. : It's mainly for video games and some amateur scripting.

For such a low resolution, a GTS 450 is adequate for reasonably high settings on current and upcoming games. The GTX 560 is a card meant for 1080p. The GTX 550 Ti is just poorly priced as it's just slightly better than a GTS 450 but much worse than a GTX 560.
P67 boards are primarily for overclocking so if you are not interested in overclocking than you would want a H61 or H67 motherboard.
Coolermaster power supplies are generally shit, especially ones that are included with their cases. I would advise looking into purchasing a separate power supply such as a Corsair CX430 V2 or Antec Earthwatts 380D / 430D.

Thanks a lot for your input skyR. I will have this in mind when I go to the store next week.

I have been a reader of this forum for a long time, just now decided to post since you guys have been giving a lot of good info.
Questions Answered + Show Spoiler +What is your budget?
Ideally I would like to spend $500 to $750, however I could go up to 1k if need be.
What is your resolution?
I don't know. I don't think this is too big a deal for me. Currently I am at 1280 x 1024.
What are you using it for?
I don't care too much how my games look, I am more interested in performance. Performance is key.
Ill be playing SC2 and Diablo 3.
I use Photoshop and Gimp, I do some minor video editing. I will be streaming movies from the internet.
I will also use the computer for work, internet stuff, and want it to run smooth. I have been using second rate computers for some time now.
What is your upgrade cycle?
In the past I have upgraded every 2-3 years.
When do you plan on building it?
I will build it in a week or two.
Do you plan on overclocking?
I don't know anything about this. However if it is recommended I can figure it out.
Do you need an Operating System?
I will do the windows 7 thing through my brother .edu email address.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
I don't know anything about this. However if it is recommended I can figure it out.
Where are you buying your parts from?
Microcenter is down the street I like the idea of picking everything up, however I will buy from where ever is cheaper.
Thank you for your help I have learned a lot from just reading past posts
Should I just use this? as above? Or should I switch out some parts. Thanks in advance.

You want to purchase the processor at Microcenter and possibly a motherboard if they have a processor + motherboard promo going on. Everything else should be bought from Newegg or another e-tailer that offers lower pricing.
Well if high settings aren't important to you than you could make do with a Radeon HD5770 or GTS 450. If you have no intention of upgrading your monitor to say a 1080p monitor than you can even get a Radeon HD5670 or even a HD5570.

would waiting until labor day be a wise decision? usually there are good sales over labor day weekend right?

That's totally subjective. If you value having your computer soon, no. If you're okay with waiting, yes

I could wait until labor day. That is not an issue. It really comes down to how much you think I could save waiting for labor day. If its only $50 than its not worth it. If its closer to $100 I would consider it.

Well in your case, as you were considering a 1280X1024 screen, LCD monitors typically have huge savings during events like this, so you could probably save ~40-50 dollars on a 1080p monitor (in the 21-23 inch range)
It's usually peripherals that get the biggests savings (mice, keyboards, speakers, headsets, monitors), while core components don't get as much taken off
EDIT: I'd assume companies would be releasing their labour day flyers within the next couple weeks

***Important notice to Intel 320 Series SSD users***
A couple of days ago (yeah I'm a couple days late updating mine) Intel released a firmware update that supposedly fixed the so-called "8MB bug" aka "Bad Context 13x Error." This wiped the data on the SSDs and made them unusable unless you did a secure erase on them. There was a rare issue when the drive powers down in a weird way that caused this to happen.
As with other Intel firmware updates, updating will not wipe the data on your drive. Regardless, it's still a good idea to back stuff up before updating. Standard procedure for updating: download the ISO with the firmware update, burn to CD, and boot and let it update. The update itself takes no more than a minute.

I would go with the GTX 560 for sure. Although it's overkill for you specifically due to a lower resolution, it's such a better card than the GTS 450 and GTX 550ti, which both are overpriced. If you can find a cheaper GTS 450 or GTX 550ti then I might recommend them, but at those prices in particular the GTX 560 ist he best deal (wtf only 10 more than GTX 550 ti?).

For those who are going to be a first time customer at newegg like me, they got a 12 month no interest plan plus they have the $15 off $100 going on right now which I think pops up here and there every month or so.
