Budget: $1000
I have monitors already need OS
Nobody but you knows what you like in looks, so pick your own case and let people know how much of the budget that leaves, IMO. Resolution would be good to know as well.
There should actually be some builds in that price range spread across the last few pages.

I'm just going to mention one thing.
If you don't do a lot of colour grading, filtering, multicam, or real time rendering you should dial back the GTX570 to a HD6870 or something.
Its the cheapest card that can do colour grading well on the GPU as well as speed up the Mercury Playback engine but if you don't really use any of these features you're going to be wasting money.

Thanks for the great replies!
Regardless, in the future, programs may support Quick Sync. I think it'd be a good idea to get a Z68 motherboard. Yeah, the price difference seems pretty negligible too. Z68 it is.
Are you dealing with high bitrate cameras like REDs or are you dealing with little flipcams? Are you compositing short videos? Are you doing lengthy productions with a lot of simultaneous streams? My A-cam is a Canon 5D Mark II, my B-cam is a Canon 60D. It's all 1080p ~24fps. The videos I work on mostly range from 2 minutes to 22 minutes, although a ~90 minute doc is an imminent possibility. Re: streaming, I intend to show gameplay at 1080p plus a small PiP region of my webcam.

Hello, I am looking to build a computer. I would like to use some parts from my old computer, such as the hard drive, dvd drive, external soundcard, monitor and speakers and other peripherals. A friend has told me that these are all things that should just be plug and play, so won't affect what parts I buy. The one stipulation is that my soundcard connects via firewire, so I should have a firewire port, but then I assume that all computers have these. I really don't know .
Aside from these, I would like to make what is essentially a new computer. I should also tell you that I know next to nothing about computers, though have a few friend who have built computers in the past who can help me out with the actual construction. That means I won't really understand a lot of technical aspects of these things
What is your budget? Somewhere in the region of £200-300, bearing in mind the things that I already have (which I put in the first paragraph)
What is your resolution? 1440x900. This is what my monitor tells me when I open up its menu. Please tell me if this is the wrong place to find out.
What are you using it for? The main problem I have with my current pc is that it lags on even the lowest settings in Starcraft 2. I use the computer for some audio recording and editing, but seeing as I already have the sound card, that shouldn't be much of an issue. My main goal is to be able to run Starcraft 2 on high-ish graphics and experience no lag.
What is your upgrade cycle? I suppose about 4 years, seeing as my current PC is that age.
When do you plan on building it? I would like to start as soon as possible.
Do you plan on overclocking? Only if this it what is recommended, but I'm sure I'll be fine without doing so. All I want is a computer that is relatively good and can run games.
Do you need an Operating System? No.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? I don't really understand what this entails, but I would like to keep things as simple as possible, so I'm going to say no.
Where are you buying your parts from? I should think I will buy everything I need from the internet. I live in the UK, so for postage reasons, I would prefer to use UK based retailers. I'm afraid my knowledge of companies to buy from is nonexistant, so if anyone could suggest a good place to buy from, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance! Jack

Not really a build, but what are good monitors around or below $200 in Canada? I can't order online, so I'm stuck with NCIX or Canada Computers. Just looking at what options are out there... apparently I'm running a 19" and a 17" dual monitor setup, and it's really weird. Would probably give the 17" to my dad and use the 19" as a secondary if I get a new one. Or run three monitors. I have no clue what to look for in monitors though, except that Dell one for $500.
I probably want just one monitor since I'm moving out next year and I heard residences don't really have that much room, so dual monitors and bookshelf speakers will probably be pushing it.
Also, I have a water cooler I got for free, and Eco Coolit, but I'm currently using an air cooler Corsair A70. Any reason to switch? Or should I save the Eco Coolit until I upgrade my motherboard? I'm really some low end Phenom II.
@above, I'm not sure if you could play SC2 on high with a $500 budget unless you're upgrading, in which case we'll need to know your current computer specifications.
By we I mean SkyR and Myrm and Jingle. o;

Yeah, don't worry about anything then. Myrmidon's build will work out fine.
I do similar stuff with a Canon 5D Mark II as a hobby and I basically work off 3.5" disks in Firewire enclosures.

All TN panel monitors (aka $200 monitors) are going to literally be the same, this isn't a joke but a reality. Not many people really bother reviewing them for this reason unless they've got something special like 1ms response times or 3D capabilities. Go into NCIX or Canada Computers and buy one that looks nice.
If you have a Corsair A70, there isn't any reason to upgrade. Heck, the Eco Coolit is probably less reliable and more noisy than the air cooler.

I currently have two 4850's crossfired which I think I can sell for 80~ish each. Also willing to throw in another 100 dollars. So what is the best GPU I can get 260-300ish? I do some casting/video rendering, and I'm looking to use the GPU for another 3-4ish years, possible SLI or crossfire later on.
thanks

@Jackbo:
You should confirm that the hard drive and DVD drive are connected through SATA and not PATA (IDE). Otherwise, you will need to get an adapter or get a replacement. Newer motherboards tend not to support the old interface. Actually, cheaper motherboards tend not to support FireWire either. To save money, the below uses a rock-bottom cheap motherboard with a cheap FireWird card so you can connect your sound card.
Also, it's possible that you may need a new power supply as well; however, this setup shouldn't take over 150W in a game so it really should be fine.
I went on the low side of the budget in case you need to add anything more. This should play SC2 on high settings well though, maybe ultra at your resolution depending on desired fps.

Hello Its me again
I bought i3 - 2100 the other day for my budget cpu, and it kicks ass ! compared to my old legend... amd x2 4400+....
Just out of curiosity. how much better is I5-2500 ? only for games. I don't care if it renders or loads files faster, I just want to know game play and FPS wise.
You can give your own example like, if you get 60fps with this you'll get 70 fps or something Any game works, I just want to have an understanding of how good my i3 - 2100 is in the market.

awesome. I bet most people are like "QUAD core is always better than DUAL" Just like I've always thought.... But its actually quite similar. Definetly not worth spending additional $100 for that extra 5~6 fps in game

So i'v been wanting to build a computer for awhile now but iv never really known where to go to learn what parts would be good or anything, and then i found this while lurking TL and thought it would be an awesome place to ask! Sorry if i don't answer these questions very well, im a big newb with this stuff.
What is your budget? About $1500-$1600, $1600 being the absolute most.
What is your resolution? My res is 1280x1024.
What are you using it for? Gaming, movies, music, and photos pretty much. For gaming im looking to be able to play any game at atleast medium settings without frame rate issues, right now with my current computer its soo out of date i can't play any games really and huge frame rate issues with the ones i can play. For movies, i like to watch them and store them, lots of them :D. For music same as movies :D. And just storing photos.
What is your upgrade cycle? VERY LONG lol, don't know how else to answer it :D sorry! - feel this answer is bad but i don't know how to really answer it :/
When do you plan on building it? ASAP - have the money just don't know how to spend it properly i guess
Do you plan on overclocking? no but thats just because i am very ignorant about it and don't know anything about it. yes i r newb/noob
Do you need an Operating System? Yes i do - win 7
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? If budget allows. - another way of saying idk if i can add one.
Where are you buying your parts from? I'm from USA and do not have any stores nearby that carry parts so i have to buy from newegg(i guess). If you know of a better site for US based customer i'd be thankful for the tip :D.
Extra info: Already have a monitor. No idea what type of tower i would need and do not care about looks AT ALL. Other than the monitor i have no parts bought right now. I'm looking for a full build.
Thanks to any that help me! I am very unknowledgeable about all of this stuff. I can i use a computer very well but i'v never known anything about building one hehe. Thanks again for help! Sorry if my answers are not good in some way, i can clear stuff up if needed.

It'll for sure fit inside your case without the side panel fan but it most likely won't fit inside if you aren't willing to remove the side panel fan.
There isn't a side panel fan, unless you mean the fan in the back?

So.... my budget for my desktop just went up by like $900... from the original $1000. Chinese grandparents ftw :3
So now I am fighting a losing fight to control my urge to build a sexy piece of computer engineering.
On a more practical (i think?) side, this means getting low CAS latency ram, higher speed with a mobo that supports said speed, and ... maybe getting 16 gigs for the shits and giggles of it lol.
On a perhaps less practical side, previously I was planning on getting 6870s in CF, and I was told CF/SLI has a bunch of drivers issues and stuff. So.... I suppose I could get a 590 or a 6990 lol why not.
Any general advice on higher end desktops? Doing some research into it atm as I type :O
p.s. I nearly wet myself when my budget went up. <3 Chinese grandparents.
|
590 and 6990 are still multi-GPU, they just do it on a single PCB. Driver issues can still crop up.
Faster, tighter timing RAM is very slight on the gaming benefits, just so you know. SSD is one of the better ways to spend extra money, as it will make load times shorter all the time.
|
And by "slight" gaming benefits, I mean overclocking my memory from 1333 to 1600 and going from C9 to C8 picked me up like... 20 points in 3Dmark11, if that?
