Haswell seems to be a lot better than Ivy Bridge for SC2. If that's correct, I'd definitely not go for something old if also buying a new motherboard. Haswell does have beefed up graphics abilities. Questions: Some people have said that the upgrade from i5-2400 to i5-4670k would not be that big of an improvement, I decided to go with i7-4770k after hearing it's better for streaming (I'd like to be able to stream on better settings). Currently I think the i5-2400 is my bottleneck, and late game in SC2 I get sub 30 fps, and probably even lower in battles. AFAIK HT won't even affect framerates. It's low due to other reasons (low fps in the first place, and screen capture overhead when streaming that hurts performance massively while not reading as high CPU usage) I've heard it does a few times, i think mostly, it might benefit FPS if you're pushing settings hard, which is when you'd want HT anyway. I'd go with 4770k if 1920x1080, 45fps isn't good enough for you (and you want 60) but not really in other cases, but it might help a bit (cant say for sure) in others. It's never a bad thing to have if you want to lay down the money for it - honestly i'd even use the practice of tuning overclock temps around HT off + stress test, and then use HT on for regular computer activity, as x264 maxing my cpu is like 20c cooler than prime small fft and gaming+streaming doesn't push temps up (because sc2 is focused on 1 core, and you need lots of buffer room for live encoding, to make sure you dont max cpu, so average cpu load is at like, 60% or something) No overclock going i5-2400 to haswell 4670k i wouldn't be surprised to see small gains (less than 20% on min fps) but if you add OC on then >50% shouldnt be an issue. You can also do some tuning stuff like changing maximum pre-rendered frames in driver (nvidia at least) which means like 1 frame, low input lag, 3-6 frames, increased input latency but more smooth picture (or so i hear, never considered using it) but you should hopefully identify what makes the feeling you are trying to replicate Mind the flood ;p And Ropid's bench surprised me with the average FPS. I remembered minimums were what i expected before (and there's margin for error, when "1fps" is almost a 10% gain..) but that's a pretty big leap in average FPS which would be really sweet

There just aren't dual core processors fast enough to compensate for it.

Might also be worth going up to 8g of ram, but not necessary if you aren't maxing that out atm. If you want to save money then maybe even try do a little overclocking on the Q9550, though I found it really hard overclocking on the old quad I had. Thinking about it more, I imagine 2xGTX260 are pretty loud. So if thats the case it might be worth selling the old computer entirely, keeping the HDD and building a new comp.

Il look over previous posts later etc; i had to do some stuff, and just as i finish, 4770k, z87x-ud3h, samsung green 2x4gb, silver arrow SE have arrived I'm such a build newbie hahaha And above post i just glanced at; Don't upgrade from 2x260 just for sc2. I have a single 216 core gtx260 and when i tested for GPU load on max settings vs min, with and without physics/effects/reflections etc, i saw the same min FPS on both min and max settings (emphasized with physics etc set the same) and in 2v2 replay with about 500-600 supply on the map, i didnt even hit higher than ~40% gpu load on max settings, with FPS pulled down so far due to cpu. I'm looking at 760ti too, but this 4770k build, even high end overclocking etc; i'm using a 260, and even if i wanted to run on max settings, i'd still probably be using a 260 for a while; it wont impair your framerates when they are at their worst AFAIK.

Going good but slow (: ate etc, dedicated a lot of time to cleaning dust and such because i never thouroughly cleaned this case before. I plan on it at least like every 6 months (cooler remount etc) and maybe a few new case fans now, could use another front intake i think my case supports 3 because of the way it is set up; i have only 1 hdd and dont need an optical drive
