Hey guys,
its me for the last time. I got an Windows Key form my father, therefore I have another 90 Euro to spend plus the 80 Euro to 1k Euro. I would choose the mid- range graphic card, shall I just add double the ram, or is there anything else that would make sense to spend the 170Euro on. If not, I would just take it.
Thank you for these recommendations.

Hello folks! Exciting times for me. I got a healthy tax return and a raise this week! I've never owned a desktop I could truly call my own. I'm woefully ignorant of what goes on under the case, I just like the pretty things that excite my retinas... Any help would be duly appreciated!
What is your budget?
$1000CDN, could go a big higher if necessary. (Just for the tower, I already have monitor and accessories).
What is your resolution?
I don't really care, whatever works for cost-benefit.
What are you using it for?
Gaming, that's pretty much it! No plans on streaming or video encoding. I'd like to play Planetside 2 on high settings without the frames dropping off in large battles. I'd also like to capture the awesomeness of Elder Scrolls Online. Beyond that I want to dualscreen Eve Online since I trade in that game and need lots of data presented to me at once. I don't need very crisp graphics. Gameplay comes first. I was raised on BW after all. i.e. I'd rather have fps!
What is your upgrade cycle?
2+ years.
When do you plan on building it?
Within the next 6 weeks.
Do you plan on overclocking?
Whatever is recommended for getting bang outta buck!
Do you need an Operating System?
Windows 7 .
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
Don't really care, as above, I'd rather have performance than impressive graphics.
Where are you buying your parts from?
I'm in Canada, so I suppose Newegg.

Cool, if you don't get z77 then get the CPU down from the 'k' version, the 'k' is specifically for overclocking. And again the TX3's little fan is so annoyingly loud.

Hey guys! I just want to thank everyone who contributes to this thread. Not only did I get help with a build, but my overall knowledge of computers has increased greatly just from reading through this thread. You guys are all awesome!

Can anyone recommend me a good case that is the following?: Very simple design. Similar to corsairs (600D,700D,800D) line. Extremely good for air and water cooling. Full tower Very good cable management features Not absurdly expensive (probably £400 is my limit). Very customisable in terms of amount of fans.

@VelRa_G newegg.ca is not very good, NCIX specials each Thursday so you might wanna repost then.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the BitFenix Prodigy.
More specifically, is it a good case if you plan on moving it around once in a while. My current 912 is somewhat of a pain.
Would also appreciate any other insights on the case or if another case would be recommended for my needs.

Horrible build for SC2 and also overpriced if it comes to $1000k
You want a cpu with strong core performance as sc2 can only use 2 and demands alot of cpu power. SC2 doesnt require as much power as a 660ti (which is usually not a good card in terms on price/performance) Too much Ram

You don't want AMD if you're looking for maximum SC2 performance. 3570k/3770k.

Yea as someone else said, that's a terrible build and so backwards, as in your money is in all the wrong places. You spend over $100 on RAM when it won't be noticeable at all over just $20-40 ram, while $20-40 more in CPU would be leaps and bounds of extra power. SC2 will be at it's knees in your computer because of how weak your CPU is, and SC2 won't care whether you got 2gb of ram or 16gb.
It's a joke to buy an AM3+ board for an am3 chip. You don't buy a $30 sandy bridge celeron, and then buy a $300 Z77 Asus MIVE motherboard. Not to mention AM3+ sucks.
Bad choice in PSU. It's not a bad PSU, but much better choices for the price. 350w is overkill for most single GPU systems, more than that is pretty ridiculous (there are single GPU systems that can warrant 400, 500w, but you are talking top of line with heavy overclocks for that).
HDD - you really don't need terabytes unless your rip blu rays. It's way too expensive. Most users only use 100GB, if that. Check to see how much you are currently using. A 128gb SSD should be more than enough storage, and will literally be about 50 times faster where it counts. And it'll feel 50 times faster. The heart of general usage - reddit, forums, browsing chrome, moving files around on your phone and documents, email, is your SSD. Besides gaming and compute workloads and streaming (which, I know, is relevant), it's all SSD. Which is why laptops these days, no one gives a damn about what CPU or GPU is in them, it's only about SSD.
660TI is a worse choice than the 7950 unless you plan to SLI, which is silly. The 660ti is also absurd to get if you are buying a phenom CPU. You are wasting $300 on a GPU that won't be any better than a $50 GPU for SC2. It will be useful for games like crysis or bioshock infinite, for sure, but your CPU is so weak that your sc2 performance will be much worse. It's a balance. If you want to play games like crysis on singleplayer, phenom + 660ti, sure, but for sc2, multiplayer games, and blizzard games, it's a bit lopsided.
NZXT Guardian is an absolutely terrible, overpriced case. It's a $20 case made over 5 years ago with a nice looking front panel. Aesthetically speaking, it's cool looking - but only in the front. The rest of the case looks like any $20-40 black box case. I made a build for a client who insisted on the guardian (i also found it for $60 at some really obscure website, at the time, too). Absolutely trash case, it's a shame NZXT still sells it. It's really worse than $20 cases out today. NZXT makes awesome cases but the Guardian is such an old, old case.
Oh, and I'm referring to the Guardian 921 "Rebirth" (RB), which was NZXT's update of the Guardian. If you are talking about the original guardian, /ohmygod.
Go with 2x4gb of the cheapest ram you can find (DDR3, Desktop 240 pin ram, that's all). Go with a 128gb Samsung 830 (or 840 Pro if you got the money, 830 is better value at the moment, amazon). If you wana go with a Phenom X4, your best bet is buying a B95/B97/B99 instead. you should really check 'alternative' places because buying a phenom x4 brand new these days is absolutely absurd, you won't get a warranty on it so buying it brand new comes with absolutely zero support (life time warranty means lifetime of the product series, since it's no longer made, and since it was just 3 year warranty, not lifetime = no warranty at all anymore). My point is that if you are so desperately strapped for cash to go for a phenom x4, it would be silly to buy it new.
Buy an AM3 board off Geeks.com, very simple. Try to buy one of their $40-50 boards, and try to not get a micro-atx if you can help it.
If you have the money, i5-3570k + Z77-D3H, Z77X-D3H, Z77X-UD3H in order of cost (ie get the cheaper one unless the next step up is not much more).
the cx430 is a decent budget psu. The xfx pro 450w or pc power and cooling 400w are a good step up, and then the rosewill capstone series is a good step up from there. cx430 is good enough unless you plan to run tons of peripherals like lots of LEDs and fans which are prone to blowing out.
For a GPU, 4870 is a good cheapo card for under $50, 4850 is medium to high if you are just that strapped for cash, a gtx 460, 470, or 7770, are all really good choices for budget cards these days. If you can afford a 7950, that's a great card, but if you are just playing SC2 or blizzard games, dota, etc, than no reason to get anything more than a 460/470/7770.

If I only have PCI express 2.0 on my mainboard, will there be no point in getting a PCI express 3.0 card? I have the Radeon 5770, and I'm thinking of upgrading to Radeon 7870, but if I won't see much difference, I won't bother.
|
PCI 3.0 means nothing. Pick a GPU however you want, but pay no mind to pci 3.0, pci 2.0. It's not utilized at all - for example the 7870 is simply not strong enough to even saturate pci-e 2.0, it's not going to use pci-e 3.0 at all. Maybe in crossfire on a board that's PCI-E 3.0 x16/x4... not sure if a board even exists like that. Maybe in tri-sli? But then the 7870 in tri-sli isn't even strong enough to really cause issues on pci-e 2.0.
On a side note, I don't like the 7870. I'd prefer a gtx 470/480 given the price differences. But it's not so much that I'm recommending you get a 470/480, as much as I'm saying that the 7950 is just an awesome card and would be silly not to buy if you have enough for a 7870.
Like you are not even $50 short of buying a 7950... why would you buy a 7870 instead?
And I'm assuming you plan to play games like bf4 and crysis and bioshock inf? Not many games warrant even the power of the 7870.

The 7870 is 100 dollars cheaper + I get BioShock Infinite, Blood Dragon and Tomb Raider with it. And I can't even afford the 7970, so it's not really an option! But thanks for the tip!

Would you guys recommend SSD's for OS instead of the usual HDD? Sorry noob question.
