You are looking as some H77 or B75 motherboard preferably the cheapest 1.5v 2x4gb ram available those cpu and gpu arem ore then fine
for the PSU, you can get basicly anything from antec/corsair/seasonic/etc....
for such a low consuming gpu though, Corsair CX430 v2 will probably be the cheapest and be enough for the HDD you want any that is 7200RPM (so Samsung spinpoint F3, WD caviar blue/black, Seagate barracuda)
If you want a SSD get either Crucial m4/Samsung Series 830/Plextor M3/Intel
As for the tower, that is to your licking (just don't pick some shitty low price case that looks nice from a random brand) Usually good budget cases are Bitfenix

Most possibly if it can recieve a fan (which most will probably anyways)
You can also try the Noctua NH-U9B SE2 which is silent (working between 8 and 18db)

Please, bear with me, I am a noob when it comes to building PCs.
My specific build was:
Super-Flower SF500P14FG 80plus Platinum fanless Intel Core i5-3570K Box, LGA1155 (Coupled with Thermalright HR-02 Macho) Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670 OC, 2GB GDDR5, 2x DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort (coupled with Alpenföhn Peter) ASRock Z77 Extreme4-M, Sockel 1155, mATX SilverStone SST-PS07B Black Steel 5x Noctua NF-S12 ULN 120 mm, 500-700 rpm 4x Kingston ValueRAM 4GB DDR3 1333MHz Non-ECC CL9 240gb Crucial M4, 240gb OCZ Octane2, 2x 120gb OCZ Agility3, OCZ 60gb Vertex 2 (there are better alternatives today)
The CPU doesn't break a sweat passive, even if you break 4ghz (I have mine running in 4,2ghz). Never seen it above 70C even during long stresstests. The GPU is obviously more difficult, it runs pretty cool at average loads (40%-70% load around 60C stable), but the heatsink is a bit too small to keep the card from clocking itself down after an hour or two of 100% load - although I've only managed that by artificial load like folding. Noctua chassi fans aren't that good for penetrating such a heatsink anyway (I just have 2 of them nearby to push the hot air down to the exhaust). As an alternative, I guess you could get PWM fans or keep the Gigabyte stock fan, it's not extremely loud either from what I've heard. This is probably a better solution than mine, but it's probably expensive and hard to get hands on. Might not fit in matx chassis either.

Many, many thanks Shauni. I will take look and do my research when I find some time. I hope to come up with a build similar to yours and post it here for yours (and other's) review.

hello there, i have been lurking here in the TL forums for quite a while now and I oh so love gaming. Sadly, I don't have a gaming CPU. I only play through my laptop. And so, I decided to buy my own CPU. Some guy was selling a CPU here in my town and these are the specs
Core2 Quad Q6600 OC @ 3.2ghz Msi P45 platinum 4gb xtreem dark ed Thermalright Tru blak Ati 4870 1tb hdd 2 silverstone fm 123 Antec spot cool Lg DVD R-RW Xigmatek power supply Gigabyte 570 aurora
I was hoping If you guys can tell me if this supposed to be "gaming" rig is worth it. Its sells for about 450-500 dollars. Can this rig play all the latest games on atleast medium settings?
Thanks in advance!
|
Both the CPU and GPU, while high-end in their time, are now 3 generations old. I would not pay $450-500 for it.
|
For $500 you can build a better one.
And have warranties.

Hi, I am entering college in the fall (Boiler Up!), and My main issue is the fact that I won't be able to carry my big full tower to the dorms for obvious reasons. However, I still want to play SC2 a medium settings and other games, as well as stream my BW games and my macbook is definitely not up to that task. I know that I can build a PC for $500 tops that can do this, and this is a list that I brewed up. Assume that I already have monitor, keyboard (Topre best keyboard), and other peripherals. I own windows 7, so that is not an issue
moniter is 1680x1050 Also, I have extra hard drives (Whew!), and an new, unopened Radeon HD 6770 lying around so that helps alot.
list: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 4GB XION AXP-700K14XE 700W ATX MSI 990FXA-GD65V2 AM3+ Sentey Optimus Extreme Division Tower Case LITE-ON Black SATA DVD-ROM Drive
We're looking at $478, and with the other stuff that I have, I think this is a good list. I would like suggestions for this.

AMD is bad for gaming. Therefore I would suggest:
i3-2120 or i5-3450 H61 or H77 (if i5) mATX motherboard Silverstone SST-PS07B mATX case Corsair CX430v2 or some other QUALITY PSU

Seriously though, why can't you (and all people) just read the previous three pages and put together a half decent build? The recommendations and reasons for the recommendations are all literally the same.
Solution: Intel LGA1155 mITX motherboard such as the ASRock B75M-ITX. Intel LGA1155 processor such as Intel Core i5-3550. Silverstone SG05. It comes with a 450W PSU. Get any random SATA DVD drive. You will use it once to install Windows and probably never again.

List is terrible. Already having a graphics card means you can easily get an Intel Core i5.
700w power supply is unnecessary and that unit is also shit. Case is also shit for $50 or w/e.
Antec Neo Eco 450C @ $40 http://img.ncix.com/gif/60491ss.jpg

Core i5 2500k @ $200 http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=57962&vpn=BX80623I52500K&manufacture=Intel&promoid=1261
along with appropriate motherboard (H77 or B75 for 3450 and a P67 / Z68 / Z77 for 2500k) which is going to be about $100.
Along with whatever 4gb memory for $20. The total is less than $478 and the configuration is significantly better.

budget: 800+ (though under 1000 would be prefered) 1920x1080 100000% gaming 2+ years within 2 weeks.....hopefully probably not planning on overclocking, but maybe.... im good on the os no sli/crossfire newegg is fine for me. first time builder, no previous parts available to use, willing to buy after market fans/ power supply if needed if a computer case is recommended, im a sucker for the red led's.
p.s. i think its cool that someone made a thread like this. i want to know some additional things like, for instance, why intel is better for gaming than amd. i wouldnt expect an answer on this thread, though it would be nice, but if someone could show me a thread or website that would let me look up answers for questions like that it would be nice. examples: (differences between usb 2.0 and 3.0..how do i know if something on my computer will bottleneck something else before buying the products...etc....)

Intel is better than AMD in just about everything, but in gaming specifically because their architecture has higher IPC, and overclocks well(good single threaded performance).
As for whether something bottlenecks you, it depends on the game, SC2 uses a lot of CPU, most FPS use a lot of GPU.

Hi its me again and this time, I researched for a bit and I tried putting parts together. Heres what I came up with
ASUS P8H6I MOBO Intel core i5 2500k 500GB SATA Wester Digital 4GB DDR3 RAM ASUS HD 7770 Direct CU OR Powercolor HD 6850
I want to make adjustments but I don't know which part to prioritize. Should I get a cheaper processor and get a better video card or the other way around? And can you guys suggest a video card that is under $200 and can support gaming. Thanks I am new to all these stuff and I really need help.

It depends on the games you want to play. Also if you're getting a H61 motherboard, why pay more for a i5 2500k? Save your cash and get a i5 2400.
How much is your budget?

my budget is about 600 dollars
mind telling me why I should get it 2400 if im getting a h61 mobo? Thanks

The i5 2500k's only reason for existence is the unlocked multiplier, which allows it to overclock. The H61 motherboard are not capable of harnessing this. The i5 2500k, for you, is pretty much the same processor as an i5 2400 or i5 2500.
Again, what games do you play?

Because a 2500k is only marginally faster without overclocking (That's what the -k means, it's unlocked to OC), and an H61 board can't OC.
