I've seen the Asus and Sapphire 7850 at 250$ on amazon/newegg, it's a solid card.

Looking at building a new desktop. Last one I bought was a Dell PC 7 years ago and it only just recently started failing on me. Been a good run! So now I need a new one and I want to build it myself. I don't know too much about hardware and what suits what, so I'd appreciate all the help I can get. And actually quite important - I want a silent PC.
What is your budget? About 900-1000 USD, but I'd rather subtract money than adding in more. So $1000 is absolute max. I may need a new monitor as well, but that's not included in the $1000. I also need a case. My old keyboard has keys that stick when I press them, so I think I need a new of that as well. But case, keyboard and monitor is not included in budget. Jesus.
What is your resolution? "Normal" resolution...? I guess 1080p. The one that's most normal today - you tell me.
What are you using it for? Gaming, Photoshop, medium advanced video editing (Vegas, After Effects, some 3D work in 3DS Max). Mainly gaming though (BF3, SC2, Arma3, CSS, other new games).
What is your upgrade cycle? Short cycle. I'd rather spend money on the long term components initially, and then rather buy a decent GPU, RAM and eventually CPU when my next pay ticks in This is something I can decide on myself though, so just list everything you recommend.
When do you plan on building it? In 2 months.
Do you plan on overclocking? I have never overclocked a system before, but would be interesting to learn it. So yes.
Do you need an Operating System? No.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? I don't know what this is, so probably not. However, if it would improve render time in picture- and video editing this would be interesting. I guess it's possible to buy parts now that are compatible with SLI and CF, then learn what it is, then do some crazy shit to implement it, then profit from buying compatible hardware.
Where are you buying your parts from? Norway. www.komplett.no for example.
|
By the way, it probably depends on your build but the computer I built about a month ago was roughly 1000 NOK cheaper when buying from dustinhome.no compared to komplett.no although it was rather expensive at about 12600 NOK.
|
@Primal You want to do a variety of fairly expensive things (game + media creation + overclock + quiet computing), so your budget is actually not enough. At least with the prices at komplett. I highly suggest you shop around, & look at the cost of importing from someplace like hardwareversand.de as well. Below is the build I put together before adding up totals. Unfortunately it's significantly over budget. I'll try and suggest ways to reduce the total at the bottom.
Cpu - i7-3770k (2,695... kroner? Is Norway kroner like sweden & denmark?) http://www.komplett.no/k/ki.aspx?sku=660225 The star - and very much budget hog - of this build, the most powerful reasonably-priced consumer processor. Can overclock. For gaming, is overkill, but the hyperthreading of an i7 vs an i5 will help in your workstation tasks.
Motherboard - MSI z77-g43 (849) http://www.komplett.no/k/ki.aspx?sku=746688 Standard motherboard capable of overclocking the above processor.
CPU Cooler: HR-02 Macho (~265) http://www2.hardwareversand.de/Intel AMD/52671/Thermalright HR-02 Macho.article One of the quietest coolers, good performance. You might have to look around a bit to find it in Norway, it's not on komplett.
GPU: Asus 7770 (1099): http://www.komplett.no/k/ki.aspx?sku=749528 This is going to be a basic video card. SC2 will play smoothly on ultra, but demanding games like BF3 will probably play smoothly only on medium or low settings. The next step up would be a Sapphire 7850 (1949): http://www.komplett.no/k/ki.aspx?sku=745752 I'd aim for that if you can swing it somehow. I picked the ASUS and Sapphire brands because of the reputation of their heatsinks for quietness.
RAM: 2x4gb 1600mhz (429) http://www.komplett.no/k/ki.aspx?sku=744179
Case: Fractal Design r3 (849) http://www.komplett.no/k/ki.aspx?sku=648535 One of the less expensive cases designed for quiet computing. Comes in other colors as well. The other option I'd consider would be the Corsair 550d, which is a little better but also more expensive.
PSU: XFX Core 450w (525) http://www.komplett.no/k/ki.aspx?sku=657684 This PSU should be pretty good about noise. You don't quite have the budget for a fanless, but that should be ok.
DVD-burner (169) http://www.komplett.no/k/ki.aspx?sku=660432
HDD 2TB WD Green (5400 rpm) drive (929) http://www.komplett.no/k/ki.aspx?sku=632657 This will be slower than a 2TB 7200 RPM drive, which will make things load more slowly. On the other hand, it should be a bit quieter than your standard hard drive. Preferably you'd pair this with an SSD (which makes things load zoom-zoom fast, SSDs are also silent) where you'd put your applications. But you don't really have budget for that. Consider it a priority upgrade for the future?
Peripherals - not budgeted, but as for keyboard, I suggest just going with some whatever cheap keyboard. They're usually fine and you don't feel bad about replacing them if they break. As for mouse, if you need one, I recommend a mionix naos 3200 (unless you're left-handed). Very, very comfortable.
Total: 7809 kroner, which according to google's currency calculator is 1809 kroner over budget. Ouch.
Possible ways to reduce price: 1)Get a weaker cpu & abandon hyperthreading (only use: your rendering & workstation programs) 2)Normally I'd say get a cheaper video card, but the 7770 is already fairly cheap... 3)Get a cheap budget case. This does not comply with your quiet computing directive. 4)Get a smaller HDD. Not much savings though. 5)Don't overclock, getting no CPU cooler and a cheaper mobo. This will reduce potential cpu performance significantly, however.
If you did 1 & 5 and got an i5-3450 (1550) & a cheaper motherboard that can't overclock like a MSI B75MA-P45 (545) & eliminated the cpu cooler, you'd get just about to your maximum budget. But your video editing would suffer performance loss. Gaming should be fine though.
P.S. Prices could change somewhat in a few months.

What is your budget?
I don't have an exact budget at the moment... I'd like to be around $300 (U.S.) but I'm completely new to this and only know things cost more than I would like. So I guess I'll say $300-$500 is my budget.
What is your resolution?
My current resolution is 1280x1024, but I'd like to upgrade to 1920x1080. If possible I'd like to have this upgrade be part of the budget, but I'm not planning on it.
What are you using it for?
For the most part I would just like to be able to play minecraft on max settings while playing music. I want high qualilty audio, so please suggest a sound card as well if needed. I will also be streaming video (Netflix), but my internet isn't good enough for HD. I would like to be able to play (I don't know much about the following, so please forgive me if I'm redundant) 1080p, Hi10P, Blu-ray, etc. content. Both directly from my hard drive and from disc. I'm also planning on programming in the next 2-4 years so anything relevant, things to keep in mind, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
When do you plan on building it?
I'm hoping to build it in about 3-5 months.
Do you plan on overclocking?
No.
Do you need an OS?
Yes, but same deal as monitor - not necessarily part of the budget.
If someone knows much about Linux though, is there a certain Linux build that would work well for me? Or is more information needed? Or is it just personal preference?
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
I plan to add a second GPU, but not right away.
Where are you buying your parts from?
I'd like to buy from Newegg, but I'm not set. If there's a good deal somewhere else (reliable) I don't mind buying from them.

That motherboard would work, but only with a BIOS update which is kind of risky. It's better to spend a bit more on a cheap B75/H77 motherboard which have out of the box support for 3rd generation Intel Core aka Ivy Bridge.

hardware novice here!
How does Dual AMD Radeon HD 7850 compared to a GTX670/GTX690?
What are your thoughts on it's power and such?

What are your thoughts on it's power and such? CF 7850's will beat a GTX 670 by a fair margin. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/549?vs=598
A single GTX670 beats a single 7850 by ~35%. When you SLI/CF 2 cards you get ~1.85-1.9x Performance so CF 7850's will beat a Single GTX670 by ~40%. You will also beat a Single GTX680 by ~15%.
Unfortunately I don't think it is worth it. You basically increase your power draw by 100w while gaming when you CF/SLI. Also your computer will pump out more heat, so your computer room will be unbearably hot unless your AC is on always.

1. Do you already have the i5 2500k; if you haven't purchased it yet, you might as well get the i5 3570k (you'd want to get a different mobo)
2. If you already have the i5 2500k; any P67 or Z68 motherboard would work. They are different from H61 and H67 motherboards because they allow you to overclock, which is what the i5 2500k is for.
Now, as for the Sabertooth specifically; I think it is a horribly designed motherboard and too expensive. Provided all you need is the right socket and one PCI, you can get an Asus P8P67 Pro or ASRock P67 Pro3.
You can pretty much follow the directions here to get a decent overclock. The BIOS naming conventions for the ASRock P67 Pro3 will be different than the Asus P8P67, so if you don't feel comfortable exploring/comparing, just get the Asus since that's what this guide is based on. http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/overclocking/39184-p67-sandy-bridge-overclocking-guide-beginners.html

Hi everyone, my desktop is starting to crap out on me, which I bought nearly 3 years ago. I had a friend build one for me before that which lasted 7 years. I'm trying not to buy some PoS from a retail store so I'm coming here for a build / advice.
My current computer experience is that I am sure I can install hardware, but loading an OS messing with BIOS or other software technicalities I'm not that great with. I'm deciding whether to buy a gaming system from Newegg or whether I should build it myself to get more bang for my buck.
Here are the details and at the bottom are two sets I'm looking at from Newegg. Any advice is greatly appreciated, thank you!
-- Links to the PC's I was checking out (package deals and I don't have to build myself) - $729 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227387) - $539 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229298)
--What is your budget?
600-750$ I am not asking for a GREAT System, so I feel this would be enough for an ok set up.
--What is your resolution?
I'm currently using my 32" LED Flatscreen as a monitor using 1360x768 res. 1280x1024 seems kinda wonky on the TV. Not sure why. The Native Res is 1920x1080 but my comp isn't able to handle that. I originally was trying to hook it up with the HD cable, but my Nvidia Geforce (2 years old) doesn't do well with it, so I've been using the VGA.
--What are you using it for?
D3, SC2, Minecraft... I dabble in 3 dimensional design work with mechanical engineering, so Pro-E, Solid Works, Auto-Desk inventor. I may start getting into FPS like BF3 because I think the consoles are starting to be on the way out. So nothing to major, but certainly not word processing.
--What is your upgrade cycle?
2 year cycle.
--When do you plan on building it?
1-2 weeks (IE: Order Now, and build when I get the parts) My current desktop is having major BIOS / Motherboard issues, is slow, grumpy, and otherwise needs to be kicked to the curb.
--Do you plan on overclocking?
No.
--Do you need an Operating System?
I would like to get Windows 7 with an avialable upgrade to windows 8 when it comes out. Most packages I have looked at have that option, but if that option doesn't come when you buy windows 7 another way, then windows 7 is fine without the upgrade.
--Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
If the cost doesn't increase much by having a second GPU, and I need the performance (which I don't think I do) then sure. Otherwise, no.
-- Case? I need a case, looks are not important, just air flow, and space.
--Where are you buying your parts from?
Newegg or another retailer if someone references better prices that match the quality.

I should be able to build within a month or so if the money necessary pans out correctly (Both from work pay and bills paid). It'd be good if you gave a preliminary list, though. Just to be safe.
