Hi all, I've been recently I've been thinking about trying to improve my computer for streaming by possibly getting a video capture card. I've been looking on newegg and there's some for ~$100 that seem pretty good, although my main worry is that all of them have negative comments about crashes/freezes/not working with xsplit. Are these video capture cards even worthwhile or should I just save up and upgrade my processor/mobo or whatever? My issue that I CAN stream currently at 720p with dxtory, but depending on the game I get pretty low frame rates. I can stream League of Legends/Dota 2 on highest settings with a 30 fps with a few spikes, SC2 on low/medium with textures on high at 30 fps as well (although big battles can be spiky), but for example GW2 I could not stream at all this past beta weekend (first I thought it was drivers, tried to update, still got <20 fps and crashed twice). Now maybe this is because the game isn't optimized but either way I'd like to stream it in the future at a comfortable 30 fps.
My current specs: Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor (4 CPUs), ~3.4GHz Memory: 4096MB RAM Card name: AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series
So I guess my questions are: 1) Are video capture cards worth it in the short run, or should I just save and upgrade to an i7? 2) How big of a change would I realistically have upgrading with a video capture card with my current computer? Would I be able to stream at 720p 60 fps? Could I go up to 1080p with 30/60 fps?

So, because of Diablo 3, I am now rich with disposable money beyond imagining. So it's time I did something with my PC, which is the following.
8 gigs 1600 RAM i5-2500k Radeon 5830 HDD 7200
I figure its time for a GPU upgrade but anyone is encouraged to disagree as long as they have sound reasoning.
Budget is like $500 or less. Crossfiring not really an option (board is x16x4). I was going to get a 7870 because while my budget is higher, I really like getting the best bang for my buck.
But then a friend alerted me to the fact that they are making a revision to the 7970 Tahiti XT. http://www.techpowerup.com/167711/AMD-Radeon-HD-7970-GHz-Edition-quot-Tahiti-XT2-quot-Detailed.html
It was at that point that I decided I could no longer in good faith make a decision without advice from others that are knowledgable.
As I said I have no problem spending that kind of money on one graphics card, as long as I am still spending along the price/performance trendline.
Oh and nVidia does not apply to me. Forum regulars already know this and why.

Asked this in simple questions thread for tech support, but realized this was probably better to ask here.
What is a PSU that is high quality, modular, and can support two EAH 6850s, a 1090t x6 black thuban, and corsair h60?

quite an expensive psu for someone running a mid-end system, worth it though.

He wants a high quality, modular PSU for CFX, high TDP CPU, and closed loop liquid. There's not going to be a cheap option anyone sane would entrust their rig to.

Now that i think about it though. Tahiti XT2 probably isnt going to cost more. Im leaning toward waiting for that.

Quality and modular are pretty relative so I figure I'd go on the higher end. Crossfire HD 6850 and 1060T doesn't exactly spell efficient either. Plus, if he's using an H60, I figure he wouldn't care about spending more for marginal gains.

You might as well get an i5 3570k if you want to stream. It's only $10 more than an i5 3550. And that H77 is within the price range of Z77's.
Other than that, I would just get cheaper ram and a better case. The Blackbone is pretty cramped. Also, you should get this HDD. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185
Not much else to say.

Do you really need all that for D3?
I was thinking about getting D3, but man I'd need a GPU overhaul with my HD 5770 if you need a 7870 or 7970 for it...

He doesn't need it for D3, he just has extra cash courtesy of either the RMAH or methods we probably shouldn't discuss, and wants to dump it into hardware. A 5770 would run it decently, it's about as GPU demanding as you'd expect out of a Blizzard product.
Say, Medrea, do your HDD's ever get arrested if they die on you? + Show Spoiler +After all, Corrupting a Miner is a serious offense in the US.

I only use one hard drive for every miner. (Total, all of them, one hard drive links them all).
GPU's are free with time but, less time is always nice!

WHAT THE
You made $500 of RMAH?

One drive to bring them all, and in the darkness, bind them.

What? Fuck no.
Ive made about $1500.
I guess that really answers my question. There really isnt a reason not to get the new 7970.
I was just wondering if the drivers were shit and I needed to steer away from 7970 and stick with 7870 which is really good price/perf.
EDIT: I figured this thread would be inundated with people updating their computers off of D3 money. Oh well.
7970 doesnt shit bricks or anything right?
EDIT2: Screenshot of a vertical slice of my RMAH + Show Spoiler +
Thats today and yesterday.

I have a question regarding the new video cards:
the price of the geforce 600 series is not going to affect anything as they are way atop my budget, unless I go for one of the mid-end cards.
SO i'm deciding how much i should spend on my video cards... I want to play d3/sc2/stream dota2 on max settings, 1920x1080 full hd.
If i'm NOT OVERCLOCKING...
should i get a 2500 or a 3570k? the price is not that different. is there any point in getting a z77 mobo? how much should i pay for my graphics cards? and more importantly, amd or nvidia?
i'm looking at the 560, 7770, 7850, 560Ti, 7850. I know the price varies a lot; i just listed the new cards i'm capable of paying for. I've heard good stuff about the 7000 series, can anyone elaborate?
|
I wonder if the market will grow or shrink. My guess is shrink. But best of luck to you. And also, I don't know much about the new 7970 coming out, but after the 680 came out, the regular 'ole 7970 became not as bad in terms of price/performance once they did the price drop. At least in the U.S. Maybe the older 7970s will be cheaper than the new ones?

If you're not overclocking, you should get a 3570k. Edit: i5-3450 or 3550, no K necessary (though it doesn't hurt) z77: not if you're not overclocking. You'll want ye olde cheap B75 or H77 monitor, or possibly an H67. Not sure if all of those have been updated with the ivy bridge-compatible bioses yet, but they probably have. If so, there's a pretty good deal on an MSI h67 on newegg right now.
For graphics card... not that much for the games you mentioned. None of those games take much GPU power, so you'd really only be paying more for non-d3, sc2, dota2 games, since those will all run on max on most if not all $120 plus GPUs, and also some less than that. If money's not a big issue, I'd probably get a 6870 in your position, since you can usually get one on special for about $150, not too much, and they still provide a little oomph for non-easy-to-run games. But if you really don't care much about other games, just get a cheap 6770 or 560se (560 shitty edition, but it's better than the 550ti) or something.
