~$1000 Budget doesn't include monitor and peripherals.
What is your resolution?
1920x1080
What are you using it for?
Mostly SC2 and D3 for now. Probably some upcoming games as well. I also heavily use Excel and other statistical software with large amounts of data at a time (20,000+ rows).
What is your upgrade cycle?
~4 years
When do you plan on building it?
Now
Do you plan on overclocking?
No
Do you need an Operating System?
No
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
No
Where are you buying your parts from?
Preferably from Memory Express Edmonton South since they have price beat and I can pick up to save on shipping (http://www.memoryexpress.com/). I am also willing to order from NCIX and newegg.ca if they have really good deals that Memory Express doesn't have.
This is my first time attempting to build a computer. Will I need to buy any misc. accessories (eg. cords) aside from thermal compound?
The budget doesn't include monitor and peripherals.
I already have the peripherals but I'm also looking into monitors which will be outside my budget. So far I thinking of getting a dell ultrasharp when it goes on sale unless you have other recommendations.
Can you help me redo the parts and orders using a different site other than Newegg. Apparently Newegg hates me. This is the second time they canceled my order and suspended my account. Last time when I made a computer, I made two accounts and they both got suspended. I used the same debit card information on tiger direct and it worked, but Newegg it doesn't worked on Newegg. I thought I could give it a try this time around, but no. Same thing happened and I had to call them again to unblock my accounts. It's getting really annoying, so I would rather buy from elsewhere despite having to pay a little bit more. Thanks. I have already ordered the monitor.

She is not a gamer at all.
I also have an H60 laying around which I may or may not use. Also one more thing to consider is that her room gets VERY hot in the summer. I also have 4gb of DDR3 laying around aswell. If possible, I'd rather get her a 128/64gb and an HDD, would probably love the boot time, if the budget allows.
I'd also need some sort of cheap wireless adapter.

For $550 your not going to get much of a computer if your getting that $100 case and require an SSD. I started finding an i5-3450/2400 build but I quickly realized its out of your price range. I assume your fine with putting an mATX motherboard into an ATX case.
Hello everyone, I talked to a few of the main posters in this thread around 2-3 months ago and you guys gave me some very friendly help with a build for around 1000-1200. I now have more money and wanted to see if anything has changed in the ever changing computer world since you guys last suggested your builds for me.
I also wanted to post here this time instead of just PMs to try and get you guys to come up with the best possible build for what I have wrote below. Some back and forth like... "why did you tell him to get that when this is better", would be a good thing if that happens because it would make it so I really am getting the best build I can with my hard earned money. =) It's never a bad thing when very smart people like you guys bump heads. =) I have been saving for a while and waiting forever so lets do this!!!!!
It was also very nice how some of you last time actually took the time to find everything and link to them on a single page. That is why I come here, you guys kick a$$!
What is your budget?
1600- I have 2500 to spend but I am taking good advise and using some of it for "stuff" that can last for a long time like a really good keyboard, mouse, and maybe a better monitor then I have now... I could use my viewsonic hdmi 1080p full HD (sorry can't find model #) for a second monitor for things like internet while I am playing on a better one.
What is your resolution? I believe I could play on 1920x1080 with my viewsonic... ?
What are you using it for?
I want to be able to play any/all Blizzard games on highest (ultra) quality perfectly. It would also be nice if I am spending this much to be able to play games like battle field/ skyrim type games on good quality settings.? GuildWars2 when its out and torchlight 2.. all games that I know don't really have the highest specs but I want to make sure future games will have no problem playing.
I might use it for streaming down the rd. photo shop, movie editing ect. LOTS of internet surfing/ pornz =) hey at least I'm honest! I was leaning towards the 2600k I7 intel instead of the 2500 i5. for some of those reasons....
I want the computer to be fast, powerful, some what quite, and to be able to plug like ear buds/ headphones/ keyboard/ mouse into the computer case (like USB / head jacks) I want to be able to click on stuff and have them open right up... so a SSD sounds like a must for windows and games??? With my sisters old comp it takes 5 years for windows to start up when you turn it on and clicking on more than 1 thing makes it freak out.. I don't like SLOW!
Also the case isn't a huge deal for me. lights and having a good looking case would be cool but not if it takes to much money away from performance.
What is your upgrade cycle? I guess that depends on if something comes out that I can't play and really want to play and need to upgrade. 2-5 years?? When do you plan on building it?
I am starring at a copy of D3 on my desk that my computer now wont play and it is killing me...so I will be ordering all parts for this build hopefully by the end of the week! =)
Do you plan on overclocking? If I can figure out how to do it without killing/hurting anything then yes. why not right? =)
Do you need an Operating System? Yes, Windows plz I have a mac powerPC G5 right now and I like MAC but want to go back to windows for this comp. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
I really don't know what SLI or Crossfire are... but I would say I would need a lil more money for a good second GPU for this build and what I want to use it for I'm not sure if I need it????
Where are you buying your parts from? If I could get them all from Newegg that would be sweet. Since I will be ordering everything hopefully at the end of this week 5/25/12 It would be easier to get all the stuff from the same place. BUT if you find something for cheaper on another site I would for sure order from there.
Final Thought - if I don't need to spend 1600+ for what I wrote above then I wont.. I just really want to make sure im not going regret spending 1000 and wishing I spent more for way better performance when I have the money to do so.

If you couldn't tell, this is a Blue and Black themed build.
1080.29 is a lot cheaper than i said I'm willing to spend... are you sure I don't need a better GPU or better anything else? This turned out pretty well but I actually don't need a DVD/CD drive, and I think I can grab a cheaper GPU aswell, like a 6770 or something, thoughts?
Also, I've switched out the CX430 for a Neo Eco 520c, not for the wattage but the reliability and the coil whine and usually comes with the CX430 bothers me.
As for the case I can't really change it, it's up to her to decide that so I'd rather just let her use what she wants.
The total with the case is currently $510 with case and without GPU (Including shipping and tax.. fuck living in NJ)

If you'll be streaming, change the i5-3570k to an i7-3770k. Also upgrade the GTX 560 to a GTX 670 to boost graphics performance. Also, upgrade the power supply to Kingwin Absolute Platinum 550W for $105 in case you want to add a second graphics card later to crank up the settings on some 2560x1440 monitor you might get.
Btw the downside to getting all sorts of extra fans is more noise and dust buildup. For just cooling purposes most cases are fine already, though a lot of them could use an extra fan or two if you run two graphics cards.

The only way to really improve it is to get a better gpu, for example a 7850, but Blizzard games will not benefit from this, as they uniformly have low graphical requirements. You could always get a larger monitor as well, and then a stronger gpu would be justifiable :3

I really want an amazing computer that can run games perfectly fast and smooth on ultra settings... think of it this way you have 1600+ or - to spend on your "dream" build...( i know anyone here's dream build would be thousands but you get what I mean) I want the best I can afford it just seems with that extra 500 600$ could make it way more powerful... or am I completely wrong and just looking to buy "names" and really don't need to spend that much?
We'll truth be told, the build I linked I just copy pasted from one of my numerous builds I have saved in notepad. Also its a themed build so things aren't as optimized as they could be. I was going to change the GPU to a 7850 however all the blue/black ones are sold out. The only real thing I would suggest is trying to do is get a GTX 670, however as those are pretty much non-existent so I didn't link it.
There is this thing called an on/off switch on the back of the PSU that will eliminate the coil whine issue while the computer is off. You don't need to worry about it while the computer is one because the case/psu fan's generate more noise (I have the CX500). Any GPU you can get for less than $100 is not going to be able to max games. To be honest, with her case selection I would just save another month to buy the computer as then the hardware wouldn't be gimped.
Hello everyone. I'm getting a $850 budget for my b-day to get a new computer. I'm a noob in hardware and currently looking for suggestions for my current build. Your opinions are much appreciated
Budget $850-$900
Goal : SC2 and D3 on high/ultra graphic with 40+ fps on 1920x1080 resolution on a 21" Monitor.
SLI : Not atm.
Over Clock : Yes if OC is required to run the game better.
Wireless Adapter - No idea here.. Where can I get a descent adapter that can receive 5mghz signal.
Sound card - No idea here either.. Do people usually purchase a sound card for better sound quality?
Mother board - Somewhere $50-$70 I'm not looking for a high-end board. I'm happy as long as the board is able to hold all those parts listed above. I'm not looking for SLI at this moment. As far as I know I need a intel 1155 board with USB 3.0 and 2 Memory slots. I'm confused by the broad selection of motherboards.. please help me out :D
My main concerns are : 1. Motherboard Compatibility - What do i look for to purchase a motherboard? 2. Memory + CPU compatibility - Which Memory chip should I get to best work with my CPU? 3. Power Supply - I'm listing the corsair 650W PSU. Will a 600W PSU still be able to drive the computer or am i pushing it? 4. Monitor - LCD vs. LED. Which types of monitor do u guys prefer? 5. Still looking for a descent hard drive, sound card, and wireless adapter. 6. Anything else should i be pay attention to? What am i missing so far.
Thank you for reading my thread. Your help is much appreciated!!

You don't need to OC to play SC2/D3 on Ultra. The RAM you posted is 1.65v AKA shit.

Quoting for truth. Don't get some stupid 600W+ power supply, the 430v2 is more than adequate, and it is a good, well-priced unit, doubly so if the rebate works.
As for a soundcard, most people use the onboard audio. If you have a set of relatively expensive headphones, ie. ~$100+, then a soundcard could be a reasonable investment, otherwise the money spent is better off channeled into better cans. Alternatively, if you are quite into fps's with positional audio, then getting a cheap sound card, like a xonar dg, can provide a night and day difference with dolby headphone and other settings.
If you're one of the people that usually just uses the dodgy front port audio jack there is no point getting a soundcard.
Also, I would recommend buying a quality keyboard and mouse, especially mouse. They are one of the most important aspects of a computer build, and they're often overlooked. Yes that dodgy mouse may work if you crank it up to skip 5 pixels at a time, put the precision is going to be completely shit. There is a dedicated mouse thread to check out here, and a keyboard one too, but a quality keyboard is much less important than a quality mouse.
Thanks in advance!
CPU: I would go with a i5-2500K or i7-2600K. Yes you dont want to overclock, but you hardly pay anything to be able to do so, and in the future a overclocking might push your system to not having to be upgraded for another year. Considering the 4year replace cycle it might be worth going for the 2600K, but the 2500K is the best -value- CPU out there. The main diffrence is only hyperthreading which isent used much in games. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072&Tpk=2500k http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115070 220$ (i5-2500K)
RAM: The thread states that 8 GB RAM is an "overkill" but considering you want it to last long and considering just how cheap 8GB 1600MHZ RAM is I the obvious choice is just that. Im choosing Kingston because its a quality brand. Any other non-noname brand is also okay. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104262 50$
Motherboard We want a motherboard to our 1155 socket. I think the obviuos choice falls on the Z68 chipset. With this chipset u get things like SRT (smart responce technology) between a SSD harddisk and ur normal HDD so that you can buy a small 120GB SSD and have a 1-2 TB harddisk as storage - while stile having the fast loadtimes from the SSD (it caches all the files you use the most in the SSD). I have been lookin at some diffrent boards to resonable prices. The second one got some bad reviews about boot problems, but I have that exact board in my PC and have had no problems whatsoever. These motherboard also have intelligent tweaker which makes the overclocking very simple. Simply change the multiplier. I currently have mine running at 4.5 Ghz stable http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128506 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128512 140$ (GIGABYTE GA-Z68XP-UD3)
CPU Cooler: There are a million diffrent choices here. Aslong you use a quality brand and look what people say about the product you should be fine. I am currently using a coolermaster V6 GT which have a big heatsink with many copper pipes and 2 fans with Push/blow. It also comes with a molex connector for some fancy light in red, blue or purple. Any other good brand should be good also (Noctua, thermaltake, corsair) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103089&Tpk=coolermaster GT
PSU What we are looking for here is a quality brand so it doesnt die after 2 years and enough Watt to fitt your requirements. I personally use a 600W Corsair, but this 750W is cheap and also gives you oppotunity to expand a little more (2 GPU's if wanted) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139021 109$
HDD Personally I would just go for a standard 1TB HDD with 7200 RPM and good transfer speed. I myself have a 1TB samsung HDD, but i guess it doesnt really matter. SSD does help with loadtimes, but doesnt help anything once ingame so I guess thats optional. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136533 120$
Total Price = 976$
So we managed to hit the 1000$ budged just nicely. You could use a 2600K if you feel thats nessecary, but keep in mind its around 60$ more.
DVD drive Optional: I dont use it myself since I can download my games. If needed I have a USB dvd drive though.
SSD Optional: SSD's are a great way to increase loadtimes and with SRT on the Z68 chipset you will gain the full potential of it even with a small 120gig SSD where u install your OS. However SSD's are expensive and not nessecary for games so I leave that out since we dont want to go over 1000$ and there is no way we are slacking requirements on the other facets of the computer just to get a SSD. I dont use a SSD myself either and my computer allready have pretty nice loadtimes (19second boot into windows with everything loaded)
If you want to look at preformance / price yourself on CPU's and GPU's you can check this site out just keep in mind these benchmarks are for all cores and a CPU will proberly get higher scores because of more cores(calculation power), but will proberly not be better for gaming because most games use 2 cores. It is still a good site for rough guideline on what to buy: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html
Thanks alot morpheus and Updated. As statet SSD and DVD drive are not nessecary. However should he need to I belive he can find those pretty easily himself.
The mostly important with helping peoeple is to help them get the best preformance PC for their budget and helping them if they dont know much about chipsets, CPU sockets or GPU/CPU preformance.
