I've owned a lot of headsets in my day, notably with Audio .90s, .110s, Sennheiser PC150, Steelseries 5Hv2 and a few others.

Right now, I'm using the Razer Carcharias and am quite satisfied with them. I'm not an audiophile, so music and movie playback isn't the death of the headset. But positional sound, headset size and comfort is top notch compared to what I've owned and used.

Edit - And a note, I use X-Fi XtremeMusic sound card.

Every single Steelseries headset i've gotten has broken over a period of time. Lets start with the first one. Said I wouldnt purchase another SS product again but have since aquired a Xai (Terrible choice the acceleration is awful and noticeable, 10% is huge when its supposed to be DISABLED...)

Steelseries 3H's won from a local lan tournament sponsored by Steelseries.

These were a great little pair of headphones, sounded amazing and provided REALLY good insulation. But were a little on the small side and I was told they were uncomfortable with people. Turns out over time one of the headphones stops working. Since I won them at a lan, I probably didnt have a warranty so I concluded myself to open it up. Open it up, and I see by far the worst soldering job I've ever seen. One wire had come undone and the other was hanging on by a thread on a seperate part of the headset. I fixed it all right up. Worked fine for 5 or 6 months, but with the tilt mechanism a wire got splinched and I threw them out.

Secondly,

5Hv2's (analog). Mic controller(mute/unmute etc) stopped working at some point, had to jerry rig it to "on", Really sounded awful on my other PC without a soundcard with a decent amplifier. After a year and half the left speaker started cutting in and out. I had stopped using them for a while. Used them again and the mic stopped working shortly after. Open it up after another 5 or 6 months tired of seeing a $120 headset sitting ontop of my PC case. Turns out the 5hv2's also have a similar problem with the tilt/swiver mechanism where the chassy (top?) connects to the earcups. Giant gash in the cable going to the left speaker (Really SS? Moving parts and you let a cable just do its own thing??) Moving it around would bring back sound. Attempted to cut out the portion of cable that was damaged but with audio equipment that rarely works.

Currently using a Psyko Kyrpton I won again at a lan event tourney. Pretty great headset for free. Has a great 5.1 system but it's basically 5 speakers on your head. The amp is great, but overkill with my soundcard. Amp is a neat little device that works great on my second PC though (which has onboard). They are kinda gimmicky (plastic, not good insulation, everyone and your grandmother will hear every sound). And quite heavy. They sound pretty good, have decent bass (although it has to be on max pretty much) but I wouldnt pay full price for them.

Anyways, I'm looking to pick up a pair of PC350's but I would like something with really great sound insulation for some good beats. Any alternatives that would match the quality? Alternatively I was thinking of an HS1A, but want something that can match with a decent sound card.

I was just thinking about how I need a new headset a few days ago, and then I found out about the forthcoming Razer Tiamat last night. As someone who doesn't know anything about headphones whatsoever, all the tech specs/marketing is totally hypnotizing me.

Myrmidon had a very informative response to Misanthrope's Tiamat question in the Headphone Enthusiast Thread (basically saying that you can't really get enough information from specs alone), but I was just wondering what other experienced headphoniphiles think about this headset, taking it at face value. Does it look like it's just all puffery, or would it perhaps be worth the $180 price tag?

Edit: Failwording. I didn't mean to make it sound like others were more experienced than Myrmidon (that guy rocks), just that they're more experienced than me.

The general consensus is that surround sound headsets aren't any better than regular stereo headsets, and often the sound quality might even be worse because there are too many small drivers crammed into the earcups. At 180$, it definitely isn't worth it, as you could get something like a sennheiser pc 360's for that price.

The Tiamat 22 on the other hand looks quite interesting, and could possibly be a very good heaset for the pirice. The adjustable headband looks very nice, and the construction seems to be solid. It is impossible to say anything about the soundquality at this point though.

Listen to Phayze, that guy speaks truth about steelseries headset. While its true that their headset are comfy, may sound good and all, the truth is they are so cheaply made. Everyone i know who bought their headset had to change it after about a year or 2.

I've owned a siberia v1 (the worst of the worst IMHO when you actually open the headset and find out how they are made) they broke after the 1st time I've dropped them on the floor accidentally. The metal wires (that hold the top of the headset) are the only thing that hold the headset together and only 1 tiny screw hold those wires on the sides of the headset. Mine broke because the plastic that was holding the screw broke and the headset wouldn't hold together anymore. I don't know if the siberia v2 are better, but I'm pretty sure that they are as cheaply made as the first version. Stay far far far away from them if you don't want to buy another pair after 2 years.

I've also owned a 5hv2 and after a while, the same thing as Phayze happen to me too. The left speaker started cutting in and out. The same thing happen to 2 of my gaming friends. Mine lasted about 2 years. The headset was great at first but when those kind of things happen to not only you but a couple of friends, its time to understand that SS headset are bullshit and don't deserve your money, like all their product except maybe their mech board. Can you always find better products for about the same price and with better quality overall elsewhere.

I know this is like a big "I hate steelseries" post but in fact i really do. I've bought too many stuff outta of this company and I was always disappointed.

Here is the sciencey part of it, You have 2 ears yet you can perceive positional ques from sound. You don't need more then 2 speakers one over each ear to give off positional audio, often games have this built into their headphone setting for audio. All that surround sound headsets offer is the ability use usually dolby tech to convert a 7.1 or 5.1 signal and convert that into stereo for the headset in that stereo are positional ques which can be calculated because the distance and position in relation to your ears in constant in headphones. So just because it has 10 speakers 5 for each ear doesn't give any more merit to it sounding more surroundy then a get up with 2 speakers. All it means it that they have to work out their own system for creating positional audio rather then using established ones. In other words my lamenting is that usually i feel those often work on marketing a product that cost more to make and can make up for more then making a quality one.

edit:Myrmidon just used bigger words to say the same thing basically and he went a little further.

Ideally given more time manufactures will put multiple forms of calculation and a testing suite so people can pick the formulas for surround audio that works best with their taste ie adjust it.

pretty sure you are just buying the marketing of razer.
Many of the "gaming" headsets aren't really worth that price tag to be honest.

If you want to read about people's comment on this headphones, go to engadget:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/18/razers-latest-tiamat-headset-delivers-7-1-sound-straight-to-you/

but trust me, it won't be that good. You would better off buying a good headset made by a more well-respected audio tech brand, their 2.1 maybe even better than this 7.1 simply because they produce better, more natural sound

Does anybody have any suggestions of cheap headsets? (<$30 range). I just sold my high quality headset as I will be moving to college soon and is too clumsy to carry around (wireless). I will probably be wearing earbuds (morays) under the headset anyways but I want one for the microphone capabilities. I understand that these cheap headsets make break easily, etc but I just need one for skyping and voice chatting in games. Any suggestions on the better ones in that price range? A quick search on amazon gives very little results. Also 3.5mm or USB?

It's not a matter of believing in them, A 8 channel headset can take a signal up to 8 channels and process it down to 2 channels, using the positional cues from those 8 channels to create a 2 channel signal that still contains positional cues. It's more of a software end then a hardware deal, the only thing is that we all learn how to take positional cues a bit differently so one companies version may not sound right while another sounds great really they need to make it adjustable or something. In most cases outside of movies surround headsets aren't really needed too much, games already do that most of the time in their headphone setting, some higher quality sound cards try the same in their headphone setting.

My steelseries siberia v2 just died a couple minutes ago. It's sad, they had amazing sound quality and comfort. Serves me right for buying them from hong kong for 50% off. It came with a 1M cable so I ended up ripping them out of my front audio jacks a bunch of times. Right now I'm looking into getting the Razer Carcharias. Good choice?

I have the Razer Carcharias, and it's really good. The audio quality is good (bass is sick!) and it's super comfortable. It has a really long cord, which can be a good or bad thing depending on who you are. I personally like the cord, because I can get up and get something in my room without having to take them off, but others don't like it because it can get tangled/rolled over by chairs etc. The mic doesn't work on my laptop so I can't really test it (I have a Dell Latitude D630 running Vista, and it's not picking up the mic at all >_<) but it did work on a computer with windows 7. The problem with the mic is that it's not very adjustable, it only goes up and down, you can't move it horizontally. Overall, I am really liking it besides the mic not working :D

Actually you should be able to move the mic horizontally but to a certain extend. There is a flexible part in the middle of the mic who can be moved horizontally like on THIS picture.

Can anyone here tell the differance between the Sennheiser 151 and their 161? Links: http://www.sennheiserusa.com/pc-headset-gaming-headset-skype-voip-500922 and http://www.sennheiserusa.com/pc-headsets-pro-gaming-skype-voip_500926.
They seem very very similar if not exactly the same but there is a $40 differance.

for the price you cant beat the Logitech g930, and its wireless.... I always hook up my laptop to my big screen and if the old lady is sleeping I can put on the headphones, lay in bed and watch a movie. The range is really long as well. I listen to music while cutting the grass. Battery is decently long as well about 8-10 hours, I only charge it up every couple of days. Sound quality is as good as any 150-200 dollar headset id say. I personally wouldnt be able to tell the difference. The 7.1 sounds pretty sick if whatever you are listening to supports it. Most games and movies do. A lot of people cry and say a good 2.1 headset is the best, they have no tried a game with a 7.1 or watched a movie that supports it. Sounds sooo sweet. Also if whatever you are listening to does not support 7.1 you can always switch it off. They were on sale at newegg for 99 bucks awhile ago. THey still might be that price. For 99 bucks for a wireless 7.1 quality headset, you cant really beat it... and the Microphone on it is noise cancelling so you cant hear, any background noise at all, whether it be your computer fan, noisey ass keyboard (mech keyboards)....

OH yeah i forgot to mention you can easily SCAM logitech,,,, I called in and said my USB dongle snapped they sent me a new one,, then I told them that the dongle didnt work with my headset (it indeed worked, but I lied) the fuckers sent me a whole NEW headset.... im still using the old one which is about 6-7 months old now.... I am saving the new one for a rainy day or since future shop/best buy doesnt require you to have a receipt I may return it there and get a gift card or something.
