5.1 / 7.1 headsets are completely useless.

'Gaming' headsets (SteelSeries, Razer etc) are generally OK, altho I wouldn't buy any of these as I think there are better options in those price ranges.

Gaming headset are meant for gaming, they have a mic which most gamers like.

Also 5.1 and 7.1 headset work they are not useless thinking just because they took the time to add in the drivers to accept the 6 and 8 channel sources they skimped out on tuning the headset for anything besides games. Not all companies are so shortsided.

Like, how can you hear it differently?

It's largely just ambiance as there is no real direction that you are observing from a 1st person view or something.

Yes that's because they are tuned to be tight make a strong seal so it stays on your head. Checking out what kind of padding the use around the ears is a good way to get a sense on how long it will take to hurt but hell if it takes you 6 hours to get sore who cares, i mostly see it as if i can do 2 hours then rest for 30 mins it's good enough, more is nicer but hell if i've been playing non stop for 2 hours maybe i should take a break. You also may want to avoid artificial leather covered ones as you sweat right? and so it gets icky after a long time and that can make you a bit uncomfortable.

I need to replace my headset, I've had a Creative HS1200, the sound was great but I didn't like the waving effects the crystalizer made when listening music with the built-in Winamp equalizer...

Now I need to upgrade... I'm hesitant to go for Creative again due to the above issue.... Is it really worth getting the PC360 over PC350?

HD 555's are considered to be amazing for gaming. Most of the high high end CS:S community uses them, But with that in mind. we're talking about starcraft here. Really even ipod headphones would do as directional sound just isnt important. If the HD 555's are outside of your price range, yet you still want a high quality multi range headset, I would recommend one of the steel series headsets. The Steelseries 7H's are very comfortable, very affordable, and very portable (detachable earpieces for luggage so they dont break). For a more sleek look, the Steel Series Siberia V2's are very nice also, and are highly recommended. Both of these have an outstanding sounding microphone, I have never bought a headset with a better microphone (or standalone microphone for that matter) that sounds nearly as good as the Steel Series microphones.

Going to +1 all the hate towards 5.1/71 headsets. It really is just a gimmick. They're making a ridiculous amount of money out of the gaming community just beaus they're branded as gaming headphones. As a few of you have said the only good thing about them is that they come with a mic attached. This really isn't a problem though as you can just buy a clip on mic or a desktop mic instead. Having said this the HD 555's and the Audio Technica AD700's are probably the best in their certain price range. I play competitive FPS and i hear more than those with gaming headsets with my AD700's. It's only the simple fact that they are better quality. 5.1/7.1 does not make it easier to hear directional sound and it is also just lower quality all around (suck for music, don't tell me it doesnt suck unless you've tried real headphones). Some gaming headsets are ok - especially if you're only going to be gaming with them and if having the mic attached is essential to you,

If you're in a quiet environment, open headphones like the HD555 or AD700 + a clip-on mic is going to work and going to be the better value. Otherwise, the actual positioning of the mic on a headset and sound isolation of other headset options will matter.

Granted, I'm not personally that much a fan of the AD700. The sound is fine for the price compared to other headphones but nothing spectacular imho. The headphones probably fit a little bit loose unless you have a really wide head; they're fine sitting down, but when I tested them for a couple of days, I worried about them falling off if I leaned down or back. They're touted as being very comfortable and in general I would agree, but some may not like how the drivers are angled and may press very lightly against the sides of the ears.

For positional audio, the AD700 are really good because of the wide soundstage. They have all the clarity you need for that purpose. Also, the bass on them is fairly weak, which helps prevent low boomy sounds from covering up what you're trying to hear. (so that's an advantage here, if you want to think of it that way)

I use the Zowie Gear Hammer. I don't know how good they are for all FPS games, but the mic is amazing and the sound quality is also rather good.

Logitech
Logitech G35 ~99 USD

Corsair
Corsair HS1 ~99 USD

These are more 2 favs, corsair's is probably more conformable in a long session and probably those with larger heads, but logitech's sound is better.

these headphones are technically "the best for gaming" http://www.psykoaudio.com/

however I must warn agaisnt astro's, they are not true dolby 5.1, and NEVER buy anything from the "tritton" company, they second rate pieces of plastic junk and they offer no tech support. I spent 200$ on a pair of tritton headphones, they broke within 1 day, called tritton, said I would have to pay for shipping and repair cost, and that it would take 1-3 months.

I use the plantronics gamecom that has been mentioned previously in this thread. i had a history of breaking headsets every couple month cause my head is giant(size 8 hat) and i had a big fro for awhile. so i had to open up the headsets wider then they like to be. so when i'd go to put em on my head they'd break.

when i bought the headset i currently use i bought 2 cause i figured i'd break it like all the other ones but i'm still using the orignal one. sold the second one i bought to a friend when he broke his logitech one. i've had mine for over a year now.

I'm not saying the siberia or any of those are bad u just pay alot for em.

i guess my only complaint is the mic doesn't go as close to my mouth as i'd like so my vent outbound is at +5 right now so i can be normal volume with everyone else. hope this helps let us know what u end up getting

EDIT wow check that sentence structure...think that's when u know you've been on the internet too much lol

To be quite honest, I believe the PC151 is better then the PC161. I owned both before at one point and I was just sadly disappointed with the PC161.

The PC131 is a good headset though, not as great as the 151 but still good enough for around 40-50

Hey guys I have unused pc350s sitting on my desk, because I'm too lazy to send them out for warranty on the lose connection they've got. Thus I'm using the terribad wireless logitech clearchats that I have >.<.

Dear god I'm so lazy, anyways I guess I'll get on that. Thanks for the motivation thread.

I love my PC350's. Great bass, great mic, great feel.

Never get that foam stuff, always get the "leather"ish padding whatever it is. The foam ALWAYS falls apart. Also, I dont mind USB, but I prefer 1/8th incher connections cause my Soundcard isn't too shabby.

I got em for about $100, i dunno if i'd pay more.

Its quite cool i think u can hear where the noises are coming from and notice some stuff alot more (like birds).. and i think u can hear projectiles flying from left to right ...theres some difference ...

(I muted all music stuff and just enabled ingame sounds.... omg u can sometimes hear ur larva popping of ur hatch half over the map ... but i dont know if any other headset do that too so maybe im wrong

But for SC 2 only i wouldnt buy one If u play FPS .... then its awesome ! Its like a wallhack in MW2 XD !!

So... I returned my Sennheiser PC 161s..

I know I just said I would support what FakeSteve said and not get any SteelSeries stuff but after reading everyone's posts and reading reviews..

I got the SteelSeries Siberia v2 USB

And all I can say is... wow...

The volume and bass on this thing is amazing. The sound is clear; The mic is clear; The thing is way more comfortable and lighter than the PC 161s and the best part?

Only $10 more...

And the thing has normal 3.5mm plugs anyway. So even if you don't want to use the USB, you don't have to.

I am though just because I paid for it lol and I was only using my motherboards sound drivers.

Anyone else notice a very soft "hissing" sound when they use analog inputs? I have tried soundcards and onboard, and I still always hear a hissing sound coming from my headphones when there is no sound playing.

I have not noticed it since I switched to USB headphones, so I am kind of scared to go back to the regular 3.5mm jacks...

I use Plantronics GameComm Pro1 headset. I bought two pairs of these when they were on newegg so I would have a backup. I just recently swapped over to my second pair because the wires in the volume control in the middle of the cable started glitching the sound. They lasted about 4 years, which is pretty good in my book! Not the most comfortable though....

I was looking at the SteelSeries Siveria v2 USB or the new Corsair HS1 USB because they both have amazing ratings for comfort and sound quality.
Do, or Do Not. There is no try.
